I’ve recently taken to listening to the weekly podcasts of an old college friend, centered on the practice of positive psychology and the various methods we can use to incorporate these measures into our daily lives. Topics have ranged from finding our individual purpose in life to reaching long term goals to increasing our kindness toward others and minimizing our natural tendency to be judgmental. Each episode is broken into three segments - “Science Says,” based on a recent scientific study and the research generated by it; “Life Hack,” helpful tips to incorporate the findings of said study into everyday habits; and “Practitioner’s Corner,” a conversation with

a professional in the field, drawing on his/her experiences in putting positive psychology into practice. Outside of a couple of psychology courses in high school, I can’t say I’ve ever delved into this area too deeply, much as it does interest me to analyze peoples’ behaviors and how they contribute to our societal mentality. Generally, when one thinks of psychology, it is in a medical context; but this fresh angle has shown that there are plenty of other avenues to explore. As I listened to the latest episode on my way to work one recent morning, I was particularly struck by the sentiment it touched on - that, too often are we focused on looking ahead, planning for the future, reaching goals… and seldom do we take the time to appreciate the present, to savor the current situation in the way we should. It may

not be where we desire to ultimately wind up; but it is somewhere, and that should count for something. Taking a moment for yourself, whether by observing the beauty of a sunrise or sunset, unwinding with a glass of wine and a book, listening to a favorite song, even spending time decompressing via yoga or meditation, can make a world of difference in your own universe. There will always be obstacles to overcome; but the more positivity you fill your life with, the easier the negatives will be to navigate. Simply finding this particular podcast has done wonders itself; taking that 30 minutes weekly to listen to the musings of those on a path to selfdiscovery can only benefit those who are open to receiving their messages. Every day is an exploration; may we enjoy the discoveries each one uncovers along the way.

Plainedge High School’s field dedication was recently held. Supporting local sports in Plainedge is one of the most important ways that local residents express their appreciation of the rich heritage of the community.

Understanding the importance that sports play in the local community, the Plainedge School District has made a significant investment in its facilities, including the new Plainedge Athletic Center with its field dedicated in memory of

Edward Byrne, to provide outstanding venues for its student athletes. In light of this, Supervisor Joe Saladino declared Saturday, October 28th, 2017 to be “Plainedge Day” in the Town of Oyster Bay.

LIHSA Open House Continued From 7 Ralph Macchio; Eric Bloom of legendary classic rock band Blue Oyster Cult; alumnus Michael Trusnovec, lead dancer in the Paul Taylor Dance Company; and world renowned violinist Patrick Yim, to name only a few. They also get to perform alongside Broadway stars during the school’s annual fundraiser, Broadway Supports LIHSA. Alumni of the school have gone on to develop successful careers in all arts fields. In addition to landing starring roles on Broadway, alumni have danced with national touring companies, illustrated for New Yorker magazine, designed successful swimsuit lines, and embarked on technical careers working for companies such as Cirque de Soleil and at landmarks such as Lincoln Center. Graduates have also earned prestigious scholarships and grants to continue their education at some of the nation’s most highly esteemed colleges and conservatories, including the Juilliard School, Boston Conservatory, Cooper Union and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. “We are incredibly proud of the instruction and experiences offered at the Long Island High School for the Arts,” said Dr. Robert Dillon, District Superintendent of Nassau BOCES. “Each year, we look forward to our annual Open House to showcase the school’s programs, as well as the talent our students possess. Scholarship Offered Each year, the Long Island Horticultural Society (LIHS) offers scholarships to Long Island college students enrolled full-time or parttime in a horticulture program. In 2018, the Society will offer one scholarship in the amount of $3,000.00. Founded in 1934, the LIHS promotes the study of horticulture on Long Island by helping

to further the education of committed students planning a career in the field. The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts is proud to have joined with Project9Line in presenting “Active about the Arts,” an art and photography exhibition open to Active Duty Military and Veterans on Long Island. The exhibit ran from October 16th to October 26th at Old Town Hall, 47 West Main Street in Babylon Village. There was an Artists’ reception that was open to the public on Thursday, October 26th. BACCA was honored to showcase the artistic talents of the men and women who have served our Country. Also joining in this exhibition were photographers from the Vet Center in Babylon. Project9line focuses on bridging the communication gap between Veterans

and civilians. Through “Outreach, Communication and Purpose,” this positive approach enables all Veterans to express themselves uniquely through many forms of art. The arts have inspired these men and women to use their creativity and to allow the healing process their talent affords them, to enrich their lives. BACCA Board President Shawn Cullinane and Town of Babylon Councilwoman Jacqueline Gordon presented the artists with proclamations at the Artist reception. The success of the show would not have been possible without the support of National Endowment for the Arts, The Town of Babylon, and NYSCA. Marge Ryan, Project9line Executive Director, worked

with BACCA to create this special show. Carol Wirth, Executive Director, and Wendy Correa, photography teacher from the Vets Center in Babylon, exhibited the work of their photographers. Anthony D’Avino, an artist from North Babylon, was the curator for this show. On the evening of the reception, Ernie D’Alessio, who is the Music Director for Project9line, played guitar for all to enjoy. BACCA is well known for its support of the arts in the Town of Babylon. This event was a way of honoring the brave men and women who have served our Country, and it was thrilling to see the inspired works of our truly creative Veterans and Active Duty Military.

Hockey Scholars Students at Charles E. Schwarting Elementary School in the Plainedge School District have been utilizing an online program called FutureGoals, which provides students

with science, technology, engineering and math education. The course, titled Hockey Scholars, leverages interactive gameplay and the sport of hockey to

reinforce foundational STEM concepts, scientific thinking and data/graphical analysis through real-life STEM applications.

Musical Standouts Farmingdale School District students were recently selected by the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) to participate in All State and All National performing groups. Eight outstanding students were handpicked by judges to perform in these elite groups and three students were selected as alternates. In order to compete for this recognition, students prepared a musical piece to perform at the annual NYSSMA festival and receive a rating. NYSSMA levels range from 1-6 with level 6 being the most difficult. Many students begin this evaluation process in fifth or sixth grade. For each NYSSMA level, the music is more

challenging and students are judged on every aspect of performance including tone quality, technique, musicianship, interpretation, musicality, dynamics and sight reading ability. When students reach 10th grade, they become eligible to compete for the All State and All National audition if they have achieved outstanding proficiency on level 6 music literature. In addition to the festival adjudicator’s recommendation to the state and national committees, students also need recommendations from their ensemble director, music administrator and high school principal in order to participate. Receiving the nomination

is an extremely high honor and marks the beginning of focused preparation. Students receive their music and must have it completely learned for the All National conference or the NYSSMA conference. They arrive at each conference and have intense rehearsals for three days with the culmination being the All State and All National concerts. “Farmingdale High school is most proud of all of these students and their achievements. We wish them our very best and continue to learn, grow and enjoy this wonderful experience,” said Rose M. Marvel, Director of Fine Arts.

Breakfast Held The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) celebrated the 28th Peter Sweisgood Breakfast on Sunday, October 29th, at the Radisson Hotel in Hauppauge. A recordbreaking 477 guests filled the ballroom to honor long-time Activist for Recovery, Patti Kelly- Barker. A lifetime achievement award was presented to Nancy Beckett, for her dedication to the field of addiction and recovery. And, new this year, a family shared their story of recovery from the perspective of each member in the family. The sharing was powerful and poignant for all gathered at the event. Says LICADD Executive

Director Steve Chassman, “What a day to celebrate recovery! LICADD was very pleased to honor two champions in the field of addiction and recovery at our 28th Annual Breakfast. Fisher of Men recipient, Patti Kelly-Barker and Lifetime Achievement recipient, Nancy Beckett, have taken action and affected real change in how we view and serve those struggling with alcohol and drug addiction.” Special thank you to our four special speakers, who shared their story of recovery as a family. Their story was poignant and deeply felt by many gathered. Thank you to Co-Chairs, Claudia Ragni of the Kenneth Peters Center for Recovery and Nancy

Beckett of Seafield Center for focusing this event on recovery – the time is right to focus on the good people living in recovery in our communities. Farmingdale School District students recently participated in the Village of Farmingdale’s Cultural Arts Day as part of a District initiative to promote students’ creativity. Farmingdale School District teacher Ms. Amanda Sharp and Farmingdale High School Art Honor Society students Skyler Francois and Carlos Nunez collected more than 50 pieces of student

artwork for display in the outdoor showcase from each of the District’s four elementary schools. The students’ work represented various artists and art techniques including Picasso, Van Gogh, Impressionist painting and Japanese Gyotaku Printing. “There is nothing finer than to see the students come out on a Sunday afternoon with their families to view their work,

take pictures, and see the smiles on their faces representing how proud they were to be a part of this experience,” said Rose M. Prestigious Concert Farmingdale School District students at Howitt Middle School recently performed in the capstone concert for the Farmingdale Youth Council’s Summer Music Program. The concert is the culminating event following three weeks of intensive musical instruction designed to help students extend their instrumental skills and stay in practice.

Students have the opportunity to work collaboratively with older and younger peers in a unique, fun musical experience. This year’s Summer Music Program included a concert band, a jazz/pops band, and three different orchestra ensembles. “Farmingdale Youth Council’s Summer Music Program provides the ideal summer

experience for band and orchestra students in the Farmingdale School District,” said Farmingdale School District teacher Erika Felker. “Music is among the best activities one can engage in, especially over the summer, and making music is one of the best ways to spend a few hours on a summer day.”
