Farmingdale High School student Aidan Piraino was recently selected as a National Merit Semifinalist. Piraino is one of 16,000 semifinalists out of nearly 1.6 million students who qualify for the National Merit Scholarship. The National Merit Scholarship program,

which began in 1955 by The College Board and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, recognizes students’ exceptional performance on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT)/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. In February, the semifinalists will hear if

Farmingdale School District students in grades four through eight are excited about using the Chromebooks which each of them were given as part of the District’s One-toWorld Learning Initiative. At the start of this school year, each fourth, fifth and eighth grader was presented with his/her own new Chromebook as an educational tool to can take home and use in and outside of the classroom.

Last year, fifth and sixth graders received their Chromebooks. This initiative is designed to provide teachers with the resources necessary to both innovate and individualize instruction according to the needs of each student. At the same time these Chromebooks give students the chance to personalize their own learning and make choices about how they learn. The District’s vision

I love New York City. Unfortunately, my trips to the Big Apple tend to be few and far between; certainly not for lack of attractions to visit, but for the simple fact that time tends to slip away with the daily grind. Before you know it, months have elapsed, and all those fun day trips you had discussed with family and friends remain unexplored. Just last weekend, my friend and I headed into Manhattan for a seemingly standard matinee and early dinner, perhaps followed by dessert at the famous Serendipity, one of many tourist spots that I had yet to cross off my checklist. The day started out smoothly enough, as we landed orchestra seats to the Broadway revival of Miss Saigon, a play I had always regretted not seeing during its original run. The music, the story, the history behind it - all made for a beautiful and moving performance. During the intermission, a woman of Pakistani descent

seated next to us leaned over and exclaimed, “I love your country! And New York - it’s my favorite city of all!” She went on to explain that she was in town visiting friends from college, and had decided to spend several days in various cities across the United States. “Now that my children are grown,” she went on, “it’s my time to finally live, to experience all the things I never had the chance to do.” Delighted that this woman was so enthralled with our hometown, my friend and I thanked her for sharing this sentiment and, later, reflected on what a wonderful mentality she had, seizing the opportunity to travel and see the world all by herself, one city at a time, to truly appreciate those things that so many of us take for granted. Refreshed by the experience, we headed out to dinner, walking the approximately 30 blocks downtown to a rooftop restaurant I had discovered online. Once there, we realized we would be ordering our

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan dinner from a bar and eating it on tiny coffee tables near the ground, and subsequently decided to forgo this option for something a bit more civilized. Three restaurants, two hours and 7.75 miles later … we wound up about 30 blocks north, right where we had started our journey. What’s that they say about the best-laid plans? In the end, we had an enjoyable, albeit late, dinner, followed by a charming dessert at Serendipity, complete with pink painted walls and furniture straight out of Barbie’s dream house. Another one off the checklist. Another trip in the books. In light of last week’s tragic events on those very same city streets my friend and I had traversed only days before - the streets which welcome New Yorkers and visitors from all walks of life daily - it seems timely to appreciate this great city anew. For some, it is home; for others, a home away from home from Long Island to Pakistan, and everywhere in between.

It’s Fall in Farmingdale As the Village of Farmingdale celebrated Columbus Day with a street fair, members of the Women’s Club of Farmingdale (WCF) baked homemade cookies, cakes, brownies, scones and biscotti, as well as an assortment of homemade crafts, to sell to fairgoers. Rosemary Emigholz, Anna Ievolo and Cheryl Parisi set up tables and awnings early and displayed the baked assortments in beautifully decorated baskets with a fall theme.

The first WCF meeting took place on October 5th and President Tina Diamond announced that her GFWC (General Federation of Women’s Clubs) International Project would be monthly fundraiser lunches to benefit Heather Parisi’s Pearl of Hope School. Heather is a Farmingdale High School graduate who founded this school in Uganda to give vulnerable children a chance at good health and an education. She also developed her Flip2bFit, a truly amazing

game which makes fitness fun through fitness activities for kids, preventing childhood obesity while playing a fun fitness fund game children. WCF member Lorraine Stanton organized the first lunch/fundraiser at Verona Restaurant in Farmingdale. It’s amazing how far as little as $15 can go to help a child in Uganda. cancer care program whose primary mission is to reduce the physical, emotional and cosmetic side effects of chemotherapy and radiation by providing free in-salon beauty and wellness services. Speaker Cynthia Sansone told the story of how her mother, who had passed away from cancer, came to her in a dream and suggested she open up her hair salon one day a month to offer complimentary services to anyone who has cancer. In 2010, HBO called to say that they were doing

a documentary on what happens when women lose their hair. The film was made incorporating the services of Mondays at Racine and it was nominated for an Emmy. Salons all over the world became interested in running the same program. Services include nail services, facials, massage, cosmetics, and hair and scalp treatments. of singing holiday tunes to the Farmingdale Adult Day Care Center in town and also recently attended the 80th birthday luncheon of Bishop Dunne. Kudos to the Village of Farmingdale Beautification Committee which did an amazing job planting fall flowers and decorations on Main Street and at the Village Green. It looks spectacular! Congratulations to the Junior League of the Women’s Club of Farmingdale on their 75th Anniversary.

community, and has devoted 37 years to Farmingdale athletics. “Coach Cerrone is one of the most dedicated athletic instructors our district has ever seen,” said John Lorentz, Farmingdale School District Superintendent. “He is both a coach and a friend to hundreds of students, past and present, and has

led his teams with integrity and sportsmanship.” In his time working with the Farmingdale School District, Coach Cerrone has set, and held, the record for most Girls’ Basketball wins in Nassau County history. Under his coaching the Farmingdale girls’ team has won 17 conference championships, five county titles and two Long

Island crowns. Celebrating Students The Farmingdale School District’s Farmingdale High School is celebrating two exceptional students, Britney Pham and William Huebner, who were recently recognized as Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) Program. This program recognizes students for their academic excellence and outstanding performance on the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT). “These two students are an exemplary model of the rigor and caliber of a Farmingdale High School education,” said Superintendent John Lorentz, superintendent

of schools for Farmingdale School District. “We are proud of Ms. Pham and Mr. Huebner, and we look forward to following their future academic successes.” The PSAT is composed of four sections: two Math Sections, Critical Reading, and Writing Skills. The scores for each section range from 160 to 760, adding up to a maximum score of 1520. Out of more than 1.6 million students who take the test, only 34,000 are recognized as Commended Students. Commended Students are eligible to receive merit-based scholarships to attend college, pursue higher education and advanced opportunities.

“The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” said a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.
