The Farmingdale High School Athletic Department announced that all Farmingdale High School varsity fall teams have achieved Scholar Athlete Team status from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) for the 22nd consecutive season. The statewide organization also presented Farmingdale High School with its prestigious Award of Excellence for displaying exemplary sportsmanship, ethics and integrity. “The District is proud of the athletic and academic successes of all of studentathletes - on and off the ﬁeld,” said Farmingdale

School District Superintendent John Lorentz. “Furthermore, we are proud of the integrity and character demonstrated by students and staff that enabled this recognition.” The NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete Program recognizes varsity teams that have a total Grade Point Average (GPA) of 90.00 or above for 75 percent of the team’s roster. Farmingdale High School students in the Varsity Leaders Club and Italian Honor Society recently created care packages to support United States military troops deployed overseas. Working with the St. William the Abbott church in Seaford, students collected hundreds of

items for troops. Students packed the care packages with handwritten letters thanking troops for their service, as well as popular magazines, hot chocolate mix, popcorn, crackers, potato chips, candy, coffee, socks, cans of soup, gloves and hats. This collaboration was part of a Farmingdale

School District initiative to help students give back and reﬂect on the sacriﬁces of deployed American troops. Since the inception of this initiative, Farmingdale students have sent more than 400 boxes to United States servicemen and women.

Farmingdale High School (FHS) students recently collected nonperishable food for veterans in the community as a way to give back and spread the holiday spirit. Senior students William Hroch and Nicholas Carbone spent several hours after school asking for food donations in downtown Farmingdale. After collecting and donating an entire car’s

worth of food to Island Harvest as part of their “Operation Hope,” the students met the president and several Island Harvest workers to discuss additional ways to contribute to the community. Island Harvest is a Long Island food bank dedicated to helping New York families in need. The food Hroch and Carbone collected will be donated to

local veterans. Following the delivery, students met with one of the veterans who will receive the food and thanked him for his service. The Farmingdale School District community continually strives to create a culture of giving, and is proud of William and Nicholas for their commitment to contributing to their community.

Art teacher Heather Loso at Schwarting Elementary School in the Plainedge School District has been hosting an ongoing afterschool art workshop where students completed a stop motion animation by the end of the program.

Fourth- and ﬁfth-graders were able to take advantage of this workshop, which met once a week for six weeks. Over the course of the program, students studied the background of popular movies that utilized stop motion,

When you look back over the course of your life, there are often certain places that seem to stand out as the setting for your most treasured memories. For me, that place was always my grandparents’ house. From holiday gatherings to backyard barbecues, childhood sleepovers to Yankee baseball game viewing; countless events were centered on that old beloved split level. My grandparents had moved there in 1960, one of the ﬁrst of their family to have had the opportunity to “move eastward” to the country-like expanses of Long Island from the cozy

conﬁnes of Long Island City. With them came my then eight year-old mother and my four year-old uncle, followed a number of years later by my aunt; and thus the perfect “starter” home became the setting for the decades of memories which followed, not only for them but for the next generation as well – myself included. Little did they know that the nearly vacant block they moved onto would grow into the close-nit community it is today, ﬁlled with neighbors and friends, and even a few family members, on the surrounding streets. Fifty-six years later, the house that became a home

to us all is no longer “in the family,” passed on to another young couple, moving from the city, looking to begin their lives in the suburbs in much the same way that my grandparents had all those years ago. Sure, it was only a house; but it served as so much more to all those who had the pleasure of stepping foot across its threshold. And so, with the end of 2016 comes the closing of yet another chapter for my family. Life goes on, to be sure; but some things leave a sizable imprint so that life – as it was known, and lived – is never quite the same. Farewell to #580… Thanks for the memories.

Shakepearean Speaker Tenth-grade students at Farmingdale High School recently watched Ben Crystal and company perform scenes from William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth.” “Macbeth” is part of Farmingdale High School’s sophomore literature curriculum. Learning Shakespeare from one of Britain’s most celebrated Shakespearean actors helped bring the text to life and inspired students to appreciate Shakespeare’s work and

genius. Following the performance, Ben Crystal hosted an instructional workshop with faculty members on developing an appreciation for Shakespeare. Ben Crystal is a worldrenowned actor, writer, and producer, and he was traveling to the U.S. from England for limited engagements. He was the co-writer of “Shakespeare’s Words” and “The Shakespeare Miscellany” with his father

David Crystal, and his ﬁrst solo book, “Shakespeare on Toast – Getting a Taste for the Bard” was shortlisted for the 2010 Educational Writer of the Year Award. In 2011 he performed the title role in the world contemporary premier of Hamlet in Original Pronunciation, and in 2012 he was the curator and creative director on a CD of Shakespeare in Original Pronunciation

The spring harvest was in March, and a festival called Akitu, which lasted 12 days, was celebrated. An important part of the festival was the crowning of a new king. Special rituals also affirmed a connection to the gods. The Babylonians made promises to the gods, which included vows to return borrowed objects and pay outstanding debts.

Resolutions can also be traced to ancient Rome. The Romans were instrumental in creating a more formal calendar, and the start of the new year was moved from March to January (January and February were added to the Roman calendar under the rule of Numa Pompilius). Julius Caesar wanted to honor January’s namesake, Janus, the Roman god of beginnings. Janus’ two faces enabled him to look back into the past and forward into the future. Sacrifices to Janus were made, and worshipers exchanged gifts

with one another. A custom of setting resolutions began during this period as well, with Romans promising to be good to one another. Eventually, these resolutions were funneled into prayers and fasting when Christianity was adopted by the Roman Empire. Other religious parallels include the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, which is a day of atonement and reflection as celebrants examine their wrongdoings and seek forgiveness and to behave better moving forward. Yom

Kippur follows Rosh Hashanah, Judaism’s own new year. Resolutions also may be loosely tied to Medieval times. During this time, knights took a “peacock vow” at the end of the Christmas season. Each year, these knights would reaffirm their commitment to chivalry.
