Christmas is my favorite time of year, right next to summer; summer for the weather and Christmas for everything else. The day after Thanskgiving, we put our tree up and begin to decorate the house. One of the best parts of putting the tree and colorful lights up is that it brightens the dark and sullen fall nights. It is awful going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark without experiencing the light and warmth of the sun. Christmas has a way of brightening these otherwise depressing weeks. It is about celebrating the light of the world that eliminates all darkness. Christ dispels the darkness of gloom and sadness with light and joy. It is easy to be overwhelmed during this busy season of Christmas, so instead we need to allow the joy and light to fi ll us as we make our way through these weeks leading up to Christmas. Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ. It can be a memorable occasion for us fi lled with merriment and good cheer that we will remember for ages to come. In those moments and with our experiences, we truly are able to have the Christmas spirit of joy at the birth of Jesus.

Human Rights Day In honor of December 10th as Human Rights Day, fifth-grade students at John H. West Elementary School in the Plainedge School District hosted a human rights gallery for peers and special guests to visit. After an extensive unit on human rights, each student put together an essay, interactive presentation and speech to share, which was displayed in a museumstyle format throughout

the fifth-grade hallway and classrooms. Projects covered topics such as defining human rights and important people who impacted the movement. Fifth-graders were labeled as “youth delegates” for the day and shared video presentations and artistic presentations of their work with guests.
