With the encouragement and support of the Farmingdale School District, Mia began with coin collection boxes, asking students to bring in their loose change. Now, every October, the district observes Pink Out Day, when students, teachers, and administrative staff all wear pink in support of her cause. “Mia demonstrates the power of empathy and self-efficacy for the cause of breast cancer research. A handful of students—all big Islander fans—were invited to attend the presentation, which was followed by a short Q&A with Mr. Webb. Plainview-Old Bethpage Fall Varsity Teams Honored by NYSPHSAA

The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s John F. Kennedy High School recently announced that every fall interscholastic varsity athletic team was awarded the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s (NYSPHSAA) Scholar-Athlete Team Award. The award recognizes teams where 75% of the roster earn a cumulative team GPA of 90 or above.

In addition to the group’s academic success, 75% of all varsity student athletes received the NYSPHSAA Individual Scholar Athlete Award. This award is given to any varsity student athlete who has individually achieved a GPA of 90 or above. “These awards are a remarkable achievement for our interscholastic athletic teams and demonstrate a true commitment to education

The Art Adventure Club at Farmingdale High School participated in a Paint ’n Paw workshop with guest artist Dagger DogVinci. Donned in a red beret, Dagger led students on an exploration of abstract painting techniques. Dagger — a Labrador/ Retriever mix—was adopted by artist Yvonne Dagger when it was determined he would be unable to fulfill his duties as a canine companion. One day in her studio, she placed a paint brush in Dagger’s mouth. He

began to paint, and today, he’s a celebrity artist with numerous television appearances. His paintings have raised over $130,00 for charities such as Canine Companions for Independence, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and Forgotten Friends of Long Island Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation. Dagger is also a certified therapy dog, bringing love and comfort to residents of nursing homes and library patrons. “The students had an amazing time painting and playing with Dagger,” said

art teacher and club advisor Jamie Capasso. “I felt it was an important lesson in spreading kindness, continued education, and how we can each make a difference in the world. It wasn’t so much about the art, as it was giving our students the opportunity to see that no matter what your situation is, you can always contribute to or brighten someone else’s day. Dagger’s charity contributions have helped so many, and he continues to touch the hearts of all those around him.”

Bethpage Promotes Career Readiness Members of the Bethpage School District community gathered at the Nov. 26 board of education meeting to discuss the importance of career readiness and hear from Bethpage students partaking in BOCES vocational programs. Students in grades 11 and 12 are able to spend half their day at Bethpage High School and the other half at one of three vocational centers: Barry Tech, Long Island High School for the Arts, or Gerald R. Claps Career & Technical Center. Thomas Kenny, director of guidance for grades K-12, spoke on the importance of career readiness at every level and students’ capability of choosing their career path based on individual interests and abilities. “The goal is to find students an umbrella or cluster of career interests and skills,” said Kenny. Nationally, 77% of high school students are thinking about their careers but only 17% cite their high school experiences as factors on career thinking. BHS has seen an increase in students participating in

vocational programs each year since 2015 and believes in promoting awareness at the elementary, middle and high school levels. BOCES programs are all taught by individuals who have worked or specialized in their specified coursework. Whether they choose to pursue a career in their vocational program area or not, the work habits, responsible behaviors and decisionmaking skills students learn will prepare them for the workforce. Current high school students were in attendance to speak on their experience in various BOCES vocational programs. They were: Melissa Diers, Long Island School for the Arts; Alex Dupre and Ciara McGlynn, veterinary science; George Hambrock, physical therapy aide; Bridget Michie, nurse assisting; and Ramon Polanco, exercise science and personal training, Each of them stressed how prepared they feel for their careers thanks to the BOCES programs, reiterating how valuable it is to be able to learn in a workforce-like

environment outside school halls. “BOCES is a great way to really get out there and see what you want to do,” said Alex Dupre. As a testament to the BOCES program and the success which students can attain, BHS Class of 2014 graduate Nick Panella spoke on his experience. Now an NYPD officer in Queens, Panella completed the criminal justice and political science BOCES program during his junior and senior years. He credits BOCES with his success and ability to find a career he could excel in. Mike Spence, assistant superintendent for instruction, further stressed the impact on students who choose to invest in their futures by participating in BOCES programs. “They gave something a shot because they were intrigued by it, and that has altered who they will now become and where they’re going to go,” said Spence. “I think that’s a powerful thing about this. These programs can change how they look at their lives and future.”

National Honor Society On Tuesday, December 3, 2019, 122 students were inducted into the Farmingdale High School chapter of the National Honor Society. Students entered carrying candles, representing the promise of their futures. The ceremony took place in the auditorium and included speeches from Superintendent Paul Defendini, Principal Dr. Samuel Thompson, and

teacher Ilan Gornstein, who spoke about the significant character traits that encompass members of the National Honor Society. “This event showcases the exceptional academic talents of our students,” said advisor Paul McHugh. “It also reminds us that character, leadership, and service are traits which have a ripple effect through our families and communities.” Selection into the

National Honor Society is based on fidelity to the four tenants of the society: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. All students must have a 90 or above unweighted average to be admitted. The National Honor Society was established in 1921 and is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize high school students.
