Coschignano announced that the Town’s Holiday On Ice Show, which has become a holiday tradition for Town residents, will again be presented at the Town of Ice Bay Center in Bethpage. The popular show, now in its 4th year, will take place on Saturday, December 21st at 7 p.m. Admissions is free, but in keeping with this being “the season of giving,” those attending the show are asked to bring two non-perishable food items to the show, which will be collected by Island Harvest, an organization committed to ending hunger on Long Island. “‘Holiday On Ice ‘ is an event that our residents eagerly look forward to each year, and I am delighted that our Town’s residents and their families will once again be able to enjoy this special presentation,” said Councilman Coschignano. “Some of the finest skaters in the Nation will be performing and showcasing their talent.” The Supervisor added that students of the Town’s

Decking The Halls By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Just last week, I purchased my very first Christmas tree, complete with twinkling white lights, red ornaments and glittery accents. It’s not Rockefeller Center spectacular, but it’s mine, in all its 6 ½ foot “slim” glory – because, let’s face it, once you actually furnish an apartment, you realize there’s not a whole lot of room leftover for anything else! And so it begins, the decorating, that tedious task we all dread yet somehow become fully engrossed in

the minute the plates are cleared from Thanksgiving dinner. It’s a slow process, but a fun one nonetheless. And for me, this will be my first holiday accumulating Christmas novelties to display in my own cozy living quarters. There’s something about holiday decorations that immediately brighten up any room, or street, or neighborhood… the magic of the season personified. I remember celebrating Christmas Eve at my grandparents’ house and being positively mesmerized by the – what seemed to me – gigantic Christmas tree,

completely decked out in lights, ornaments, ribbons and bows, with piles of perfectly wrapped presents nestled underneath. There were the motion figurines in the windows, the collectible Snowbabies village… all signs that the holiday season had officially arrived. I hope that this year, this apartment, this Christmas tree, will all be the beginning of my own holiday traditions, to be built upon with each passing year. Little by little, one ornament at a time, bringing the magic of Christmas home.

The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York (MYO) is inviting high school-aged orchestral musicians and choral singers to audition for the July 8th through 21st, 2014 performance tour of The People’s Republic of China. The two-week tour will include performances and visits to Beijing, Chengdu, Xi’an, Yangshuo, Guilin and Shanghai. The tour will also explore major attractions such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, the Terracotta Warrior Museum, and the Giant Panda Research Base. An

GRANT RECEIVED - Options for Community Living, Inc. is the recipient of a $6,500 grant from the Burpee Foundation. The grant will enable Options to purchase supplies for their Greenhouse and refurbish planting areas damaged by the super storm last year. Options operates a community residence program for adults with mental illness and also serves people with serious chronic illnesses through health care coordination. Options’ mission is to assist people to live independently and with dignity in the community.

Closing For The Winter The Long Island Museum announces that it will close for the months of January and February, 2014. Next year, 2014 marks the 75th anniversary of the Long Island Museum’s founding and big changes are on the horizon. After a brief winter hiatus, the museum will reopen on March 1 with three new exhibitions: Colors of Long Island, the annual student art exhibition featuring original artwork by Long Island students in grades K through 12. The exhibit will be on display in the Visitors Center from March 1st through April 27th, 2014 Moving to the Art Museum, the main gallery will feature Brothers in Art: the Changing Face of

American Painting, which includes more than 150 paintings, prints, drawings and letters by William Sidney Mount and his brother Shepard Alonzo Mount. This show runs from March 1st through May 4th, 2014. Finally, the newly named Victoria Costigan gallery will feature Jackson Pollock’s Prints: Works from the Pollock-Krasner House. Although best known for his poured, abstract paintings, Pollock also created many works in print media that are not as widely known. This exhibition, curated by Director of the PollockKrasner House, Helen Harrison, contains 12 such prints and will be on display from March 1st through June 8th, 2014.

Summer exhibitons will include Long Island at War and a special exhibition, in celebration of the 75th anniversary, LIM @ 75: Treasures from the Permanent Collection, highlighting 75 rarely seen paintings, carriages and artifacts. In addition, visitors will delight at a new outdoor series featuring larger-than-life sculptures on museum grounds by two Long Island artists. The Plainedge Board of Education unanimously adopted a resolution to provide assessment relief as set forth in Chapter 424 of the Laws of 2013, titled Sandy Assessment Relief Act, at its November 26th meeting. The relief was subject to and contingent upon Nassau County’s adoption of a similar resolution electing to provide said relief in accordance with the legislation, which was done at the county’s November 25th meeting.
