The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $2,500 grant from The Laura B. Vogler Foundation, Inc. for the Too Good For Drugs (TGFD) program. “Through these funds, LICADD can continue to expand and enhance prevention program that helps children build core social competencies, refusal skills and protective factors relating to tobacco and other drug use during their critical formative educational years.” says Executive Director Steve Chassman. TGFD program is a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) approved evidence-based program to teach children in grades K through 12 about the potential health consequences associated with alcohol, drug and tobacco use. In addition to LICADD’s education and prevention services,
LICADD is fully equipped to provide on-going expert assistance to educators and when necessary can be a bridge to treatment for children and families that are identified with problems stemming from addiction. For over 58 years, LICADD has successfully delivered evidence-based programs designed to prevent and treat substance abuse and addiction. LICADD offers crisis intervention, screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and several family education workshops to help Long Islanders struggling with the effects of addiction. All Sales Are Final By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m not a fan of shopping lists. My approach is more along the lines of wander around select stores for hours, aimlessly scanning the departments for inspiration for that “perfect,” thoughtful gift. The funniest part is, it works. At the beginning of the Christmas season, I pretty much compile a list of people I need to buy for, followed by any suggestions or subtle hints that may have been dropped throughout the year. These are generally few and far between.
The rest is left up to that aforementioned “inspiration.” While my system may not be the most efficient in terms of time, it ensures that I don’t miss anything in my survey of stores. I refuse to simply buy something just for the sake of crossing off a gift on the checklist. May as well just re-gift then, no? It’s cheaper. Speaking of price, it seems inevitable – for me, at least – that the second I find exactly what I’m looking for, it shows up somewhere else for less. Considerably less. Like, along the lines of

The kind of deal that you should really take advantage of, while returning your previous so-called “bargain” for a full refund. But, as is the case with most things done during the rush of the holiday season, we buy on impulse, we occasionally pay too much in the process – and we don’t care all that much, because, hey, Christmas comes but once a year, right? Right. Just remember that when the credit card bills come due in January.

DISNEY WORLD Walt Disney World is the place to be for a vacation, or a celebration. Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida is a wonderful place comprised of four spectacular theme parks. The names are Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios and Epcot. Magic Kingdom is a magical place. There is so much to do. You can go visit the castle or stop and see the parade on Main Street. You can even take pictures with Disney princesses and characters. Then there is Hollywood Studios - it is my personal favorite. It is filled with music, love and happiness. If you want to see a great play or musical, the place to go is Hollywood Studios. Lastly is Epcot. Epcot is all about the future. The ride Spaceship Earth (also known as the big Epcot ball) is where you learn about the past and you can invent your own future. The parks are nice, but there is much more to Disney than the parks. There is horseback riding at Circle D Ranch. Then you have surrey bike riding at Saratoga Springs. You can also do arts and crafts at Saratoga Springs.
There are also horse drawn carriage rides at Port Orleans. Walt Disney also has special cuisine. Their food has real quality. One of the restaurants at Walt Disney world is the California Grill at the contemporary resort. At the California Grill, they serve food from all over the world. My favorite is their sushi. Then there is Bama’s at Animal Kingdom Lodge. At Bama’s, they serve some African meals and some American meals. So go visit Walt Disney World because Disney Vacations + Family = Excitement and Magical Memories

Art Honoree Farmingdale High School 12th grade Advanced Placement Studio Art student, Julia Maher, recently won a $1,000 artcontest scholarship for her expressive charcoal drawing depicting a vulnerable young woman suffering from stress and
external pressures as she is slowly losing her sanity. Julia competed against local students in a recent “Your Time for Creative Empowerment” art competition. The organization raises funds to create scholarships for students to pursue and use the arts to improve
personal relationships, develop problem-solving skills and increase cultural sensitivity. The $1,000 scholarship will be used to cover the cost of tuition at any school Julia decides to attend after graduating in the spring of 2015. Julia plans to attend art school.

Identity Theft Prevention Tips (NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/ Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check your statements: Examine
every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great cross-reference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated
regularly. Consider technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks: Give cash or gift cards. WALKING FOR A CURE - More than 10 students from the Farmingdale School District recently participated in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s (JDRF) annual “One Walk” event to show support for their fellow student Lauren Michels. As team captain of “Lauren’s Hope,” Lauren, who has Type 1 Diabetes, actively organized Farmingdale community members to participate in the event to raise awareness for the disease. Her team successfully raised over $1,000 toward research to find a cure for the disease.
Residents are invited to take part in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Adult Co-Ed Zumba, Yoga and Cardio Kickboxing Programs. The programs are open to Town residents and nonresidents 18 and older, and will be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center. The Zumba program starts on Monday, January 5th, and Wednesday, January 7th. The Zumba program will be held on Mondays, from 7 to 8 p.m. and Wednesdays from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. The Yoga program runs on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Saturdays, beginning

Professional musician recently visited Nassau Long Island and America’s Got Talent BOCES Finalist Taylor Mathews High School for the Arts (LIHSA) to conduct a
