The Charity of the Month for December is: John Theissen Children’s Foundation www.jtcf.org John Theissen Children’s Foundation is Celebrating Their

28th

Holiday Season Helping Sick & Underprivileged Children! the beginning of what has become the year round organization, John Theissen Children’s Foundation. Since 1992, this organization has collected over 1 million new toys and have donated them to sick and underpriviledged children in over 180 hospitals and child-care facilities. However, this Foundation does more than just collect and distribute toys. They also provide hospitals and childcare facilities with therapeutic and recreational equipment, support families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, fulfill patient’s wishlists throughout the year (for those 18 years of age and younger) and they assist sick and underpriviledged children in other ways that are needed. On December 5th at 6:30PM, John Theissen Children’s Foundation will be hosting A Night of Champions Holiday Gala! This Gala will feature one of New York’s biggest and best live auctions, great raffles, door prizes, gourmet dishes provided by 2nd Street Gourmet, desserts provided by Francesco’s Bakery and a VIP Lounge Meet & Greet with celebrity professional athletes. Admission is $50 and VIP admission is $350. To purchase a ticket, please visit

John Theissen Children’s Foundation began after their Executive Director & Founder, John Theissen, had stayed at Schneider’s Children’s Hospital in New Hyde Park when he was 17 years old. John needed to have brain surgery for a brain tumor that he unfortunately developed. The day he walked into the hospital he met a 7 year old girl named Tasha. She spent many hours with John for the next few days, always trying to make him happy. Tasha received very little family support, however she expected her family to attend a holiday party that was sponsored by the hospital staff. Unfortunately they did not attend. John was too ill to take her, so his family did. When Santa asked her what she had wanted she replied, “I would like a teddy bear for my friend upstairs.” John felt fortunate to be that friend. Tasha’s positive attitude and generous spirit inspired John. Once he got out of the hospital he wanted to help children just like her. In 1992, John held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was

Calling all bakers - this year’s theme for entries is “Victorian” houses, however the entries can be other structures / any Long Island inspired Gingerbread or Chocolate house original creation. The Chocolate Duck,

located in Farmingdale Village, is hosting the competition which includes both Gingerbread and Chocolate houses, Adult and Youth Divisions, as well as Amateur and Open Divisions. Prizes will be awarded in each division including cash and gift certificates and the entry deadline is December 12th. The Women’s Club of Farmingdale (WCF) CoPresidents, Cheryl Parisi & Lorraine Stanton, together with Lynn Connolly, club treasurer, have spearheaded a new philanthropic undertaking. Monthly Ambassador Lunches are being held locally as mini-fundraisers for a program entitled “Speak Up for the Poor.” Speak Up runs a Girls Education Program which sponsors girls in poverty to stay in school and on the path to success. They help transform the way the world thinks about poor girls and to ensure that girls in poverty are free to live up to their fullest potential. Their long-term goal is to help thousands of girls in poverty finish their education, get professional training, then return to serve their community and country as servants to the poor from girls in poverty to themselves being advocates for the poor. They serve more than 1,300 girls in 30 villages, helping them stay in school and out of child marriage, and fund more than 20 girls removed from brothels in Bangladesh. Hundreds more receive some academic support or remain on their waiting list. In total, nearly 1,500 girls and their families are served by this program. The September and October ambassador fundraisers were chaired by Lynn Connolly and Edie Allen, respectively, at the Nutty Irishman. These mini-fundraiser lunches will continue throughout the club year. For more

Members fill the totes with these items and then deliver them to a local children’s homeless shelter in time for the holiday season. During their time of upheaval, these gifts provide a concrete and predicable source of security and exposure to high quality literacy materials, reducing trauma and advancing the cognitive and emotional well-being of homeless children. Supporting a new program is member Barbara Hoerner who is endorsing “Cinderella’s Closet.” Members will donate gently used cocktail dresses, gowns and prom dresses to the Coast Guard Spouse’s Club of Staten Island. The President of the Spouse’s Club said

that there are numerous occasions for the wives to attend functions and it becomes cost prohibitive to purchase a new dress/ gown each time. She also mentioned that they have teenagers who need homecoming and prom dresses every year. In addition, Hoerner will be collecting items for our brave men and women in the armed forces. Items such as cookies, gum, mints, candy, granola bars, protein bars, powdered drink mixes, trail mix, nuts, beef jerky, peanut butter, jelly and all other non-perishable items are accepted. In addition to these snacks, assorted toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, body wash, body lotion, bandaids, neosporin, tylenol, motrin, feminine products, toothbrushes, hair brushes, tooth paste, dental floss, moist wipes, chapstick, razors, etc. are needed. Collected items will be sorted and boxed by members and sent to our servicemen and women serving all over the world. Thank you to the Village of Farmingdale Beautification Committee, including volunteers from the community and the WCF, who helped with the fall plantings and holiday decorations creating a festive and joyful atmosphere throughout the Village.
