Nearly 200 people shared their support for the Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) and Doshi STEM Institute by attending Nassau BOCES’ November 19th Board meeting. Parents, students, alumni, district board members and other concerned residents had previously urged the Nassau BOCES Board to give them more time to increase enrollment and find alternative sustainable revenue sources for the beloved programs at both schools. A decision has been delayed until the end of March. The Board charged the agency’s staff to undertake “any and all appropriate steps to seek growth in prospective enrollment in both the LIHSA and STEM programs.” “We are committed to continuing to work with parents and districts to

students and pay their tuitions. Unfortunately, districts have been under tremendous financial strain for the last few years for a number of reasons, including the tax levy cap. This makes it difficult for them to fund their own programs, let alone send students to out-of-district programs. Enrollment in the Long Island High School for the Arts, which opened in 1973, has slowly decreased over the last decade from more than 200 students to fewer than 100. The Doshi STEM Institute was opened in 2013 with 24 students and has less

Night of Entertainment The Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts will present its annual Winter Festival, a showcase of the impressive talent being nurtured by the school’s many programs, on Wednesday, December 2nd, at 7 p.m. The evening will feature a sample from a full spectrum of artistic disciplines including film, theatre, dance, music and

For me, as the clock strikes midnight, signaling the dawn of “Black Friday” and the close of autumnal activities, once and for all, I choose to savor this particular occasion just a bit longer. The essence of Thanksgiving is, after all, the true spirit of any holiday season
– or at least it should be. Too often, we become so caught up in the commercial clichés that we fail to truly appreciate these special moments. Just earlier today, as my own family reminisced upon occasions gone by, the recurring theme was family, friends and loved ones. The cast of characters may change from year to year, but the sentiment remains the same. While every holiday may not unfold perfectly from beginning to end – despite the “flawless” façade portrayed by most peoples’ Instagram and Facebook posts – they each hold their own place in the grand scheme of life. Time, and tradition, marches on, whether we like it or not. How we choose to spend that time will dictate the memories we make along the way and the fondness
with which we will recall them years – or perhaps mere months – from now. The hustle and bustle of the holiday season may be a hassle on the surface; but the joy it brings on a much deeper level is well worth the effort. Traditions surely vary from family to family, or even from year to year, as customs naturally evolve over time and take on varying forms. The specific nuances are not important. The togetherness, the process of coming together at this special time of year… that’s what traditions are made of. So before you head out into the fray in search of sale items over these next few weeks, stop to remember the reason we go to all this trouble. That notion should be enough to make the holidays truly happy.
Student Spotlight THE GOOD OLD DAYS SUBMITTED BY: ALEXIS PASIE, AGE 11, FAIRFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
On Tuesday, October 27th, 2015, I was a witness to history. Fairfield School turned 90 and I was there! Our school was once called Massapequa Avenue School. Some of the things I learned about school in the early days was that if you looked outside, you would see the people playing polo. Polo is when you are on a horse and you have a certain type of stick and a wooden ball. Also, if you want to play baseball at recess, you have to be picked to play. Sometimes, you do not get picked or there is no room
for the kids to play. The invention that inspired me the most was the Band-Aid, which was made by Earle Dickson. He made the Band-Aid in the 1920’s in Highland Park, New Jersey. It is important because there would be a lot of people with cuts if not for him. It happened when Earle Dickson placed gauck on his wife’s cuts and they got better. I can relate to the Band-Aid because I always get hurt. The event the inspired me the most was 90’s Jazz. This took place in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is important
because, without 90’s Jazz, there would be no Jazz music today. It happened when the military people came back and they “wanted life to be light and happy.” I am connected to 90’s Jazz because I play the flute. I love Jazz, and my nana was born in the 1920’s and she loved Jazz. As you can see, the 1920’s was an inspiring time because they gave us a lot of new inventions, like eskimo pie, the traffic light, the jukebox and the bulldozer. We still use and eat these inventions today. So what inspires you about the 1920’s?

New Coordinator Appointed
Faith Borkowsky was recently named Coordinator of the Nassau BOCES Family Literacy Program and the new Pre-K Initiative, which is currently taking place across Long Island. Ms. Borkowsky brings nearly 30 years of educational experience to the position, with more than 20 years as a reading specialist. The Family Literacy Program - the flagship of which is the Parent-Child Home Program (PCHP) promotes the development of educationally at-risk
pre-school children by transforming the home into their first classroom and helping their parents to become their first teachers. Professionallytrained home visitors teach parents methods to increase vocabulary through conversation, reading and play. They also assist children to develop pre-literacy skills so they will be on a par with their peers when they enter Pre-K. Ms. Borkowsky began her career in 1986 as a teacher in the New York City school system, where she soon became a reading resource teacher, providing small-group remediation. She came to Long Island schools in 1999, serving as a classroom teacher and reading specialist in the North Bellmore UFSD. From there, she went on to Reading Pathways in Plainview, where she ran a
reading and writing clinic for children with learning disabilities. In 2006, Ms. Borkowsky went to work for Eastern Suffolk BOCES, contributing to the Federal and State School Support Initiatives, the former Long Island Regional School Support Center. In her role as a project manager, she oversaw the federally funded “Early Reading First” grant. She trained and supervised sitebased literacy coaches and family literacy specialists, organized and facilitated the online New York State Reading Academy course for teachers, and partnered with the National Center for Family Literacy to promote language development in the home. She also served as a “Reading First” regional coach. Most recently, Ms. Borkowsky worked as
a learning specialist for the Longwood school district, where she provided academic intervention services in English language arts. She has also served as a Curriculum Developer for the New York City Board of Education, and has been an active member of the International Dyslexia Association, the International Reading Association and the Association of Phono-Graphix Reading Therapists. Ms. Borkowsky has authored articles on her field of expertise including “Reading Comprehension: Helping Your Child Read To Learn” and “Reading Struggles: Monitoring Your Child’s Literacy Development,” both of which were published in Parent Guide Magazine. Ms. Borkowsky holds three degrees from
Brooklyn College, where she graduated magna cum laude; a professional diploma in administration and supervision, a master’s degree in reading, and a bachelor’s degree in elementary and special education. She holds New York State certification as a reading specialist, as well as in school district administration, elementary education and special education. She is also a certified test administrator for Trust Tutoring, and is certified in research-based reading programs, such as Wilson and Phono- Graphix. “Faith’s experience and dedication to home-based literacy and parenting programs serving families challenged by poverty, low- levels of education, language barriers and other obstacles, is very impressive,” said Laura Holder-Gibbs, Principal
for Nassau BOCES Adult Education Programs. “Her work will also include Nassau BOCES Family Literacy and Pre-K initiatives, and we are excited about the new energy she will bring to the position.” “This is my passion,” Ms. Borkowsky said of the work she has done in early childhood intervention. “I really believe that the younger we can reach children the better the outcome. Building a foundation as early as possible is the key to making a difference in children’s lives. Research shows the earlier you intervene, the better chance you have of reaching them. All students are entitled to an equitable education, where they are starting off with every possible advantage.”
The People’s United Community Foundation, the philanthropic arm of People’s United Bank, honored its grant recipients during a recognition breakfast at the People’s United Bank Park Avenue branch, New York City, on Thursday, November 19th. Four nonprofits in Long Island received a total of $25,500. Long Island recipients included Debt Counseling Corp., Family Autism Center, Family Service League, and Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk County. People’s United Community Foundation awarded a total of $183,000 to 19
nonprofits throughout the communities it serves in New York. Overall, People’s United Community Foundation awarded $883,000 in grants to 144 nonprofit organizations in the communities it serves in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, during its third grant cycle this year. The funding was distributed within the foundation’s three areas of focus, with 42 percent allocated to community development, 37 percent to youth development, and 21percent to affordable housing initiatives. “People’s United
