(NAPSI)—Many people may not realize that it only takes two minutes for a house to be engulfed in flames. The American Red Cross and its Home Fire Campaign partners are asking everyone across the country to take the following two simple steps to help decrease the risk of home fires and save lives: 1. Create and practice your 2-minute drill. Have at least two ways to escape from every room. Select an outside meeting spot at a safe distance where family members can meet. Discuss the plan with everyone in the household and practice it until everyone can escape in less than two minutes. Conduct practice drills at least twice a year. 2. Install and maintain

smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms halve your risk of dying in a home fire. Put them on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms. Test the alarms monthly and change the batteries when needed. Never disable a smoke alarm. Teach children what an alarm sounds like and what to do if they hear one. They are also in need of people to volunteer their time in the following areas at their day center: assisting in organizing their donation room, building shelves in

the donation room, assisting with office work duties, and assisting with cleaning up the day center. They also need men to serve as overnight staff to watch over the homeless on Monday nights at Aquebogue’s Our Redeemer Church. I used to love decorating for the holidays. Each year, I couldn’t wait for the lights to go up in my neighborhood, the house to smell like pine needles and all the cherished knick knacks to find their way to the shelves. That was, until I began accumulating more decorations than my own little apartment could handle. To say my closets resemble something out of an episode of Hoarders would be overly dramatic; however, the fact that my coat closet no longer accommodates clothing of any kind, but rather, a fairly hefty collection of boxes piled nearly to the ceiling, tends to give me pause. In order to sort through what belongs to Christmas, specifically, it is now necessary to remove nearly all of these containers, briefly peek inside, and then continue to dig. To be fair, these are not all my decorations. Not quite. Once my grandfather passed away and we began the painstaking process

of cleaning out the house my grandparents had called home for nearly 60 years, I acquired several boxes of cherished holiday possessions to add to my already-growing collection. Don’t get me wrong: to the outside observer, it probably doesn’t look like much. And, for the remainder of the year, the vast majority of lights and garlands and greens are out of sight. Only I know what lurks behind those closet doors. (And now, you, dear readers.) It is only once the last of the Thanksgiving leftovers has been packed away in the fridge and the sounds of Christmas carols have invaded the airwaves that my mind turns to the menagerie that lies within. Usually, it is a two-week ordeal; one for the random figurines and wreaths, accents and novelties - and the other, for the tree, my skinny, sixfoot tall “apartment tree” that comes neatly folded in a box, possibly the most compact of

all my original purchases. Last year, I kept the decorations fairly low-key, favoring instead only the most special of my grandparents’ holiday mementos, a few white lights and my very own Charlie Brown tree. This year… well, let’s just say the process may need to be expanded to three weeks. The way I see it, as long as all is completed by a week or so before Christmas Eve, there is plenty of time left to enjoy. I’ve never been part of the crowd that feels the need to put up the nativity as the last of the trick-or-treaters is leaving; nor do I rush to pack it all away before the final present has been unwrapped on Christmas morning. To each his or her own. However you choose to celebrate, whatever the extent of your decorations… as long as you enjoy them, even if no one else has occasion to see them, that is all that matters. As the weather becomes colder, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation are reminding New Yorkers to register their snowmobiles. S n o w m o b i l e registrations must be renewed annually. You can do so online on the DMV website, by mail or in person at a DMV office. Last year, 106,867 snowmobiles were registered in New York. “Snowmobiling is one of the many ways residents and visitors can enjoy winter in New York,” said Terri Egan, DMV Executive Deputy Commissioner. “Before the snow starts to fall, make sure your snowmobile is registered so you’re good to go as soon as the weather allows.

Women’s Club Happenings It was a very special day for Women’s Club of Farmingdale (WCF) President Tina Diamond on Thursday, November 2nd, as members gathered to host a “Be Our Guest” thank-you lunch to honor their 52nd president, as well as all the past presidents of the club. Sitting at the dais table were honored guests, family and friends, including Tina’s son, David, who proudly extolled his mother’s many accomplishments in the community and 1st VP Cheryl Parisi who categorized the many new and original programs Tina has introduced to the club during her term. Highlights included a delicious catered lunch from Tre Scalini Restaurant, an original “Be Our Guest” painting by Anna Prisco, beautiful table centerpieces crafted by George Emigholz, and a sunflower cupcake floral arrangement by Kathy Firetog. “Many hands make light work” with the following members of the luncheon committee: Chairladies Rosemary Emigholz and Anna Ievolo and members Pauline Bove, Lois Carbo, Ingrid Hernandez, Maria Ortolani, Anna Prisco, Fran Rotondo, Val Thieke, George Emigholz and John Ievolo.

At the November 6th Village of Farmingdale Board Meeting, Mayor Ekstrand presented a Proclamation to Tina Diamond, President of the WCF, for spearheading a WCF project honoring the Dedication of an Historical Marker at “Aftermath,” the Home of Abigail E. Leonard on Hallock Street in Farmingdale. Miss Leonard, the club’s founder and co-founder of the Farmingdale Public Library, was an outspoken advocate of women suffrage and encouraged women to join suffragist marches in Port Washington, Garden City and Hicksville, as well as organizing a local committee of 100 women to march to the L.I. White House in Oyster Bay to convince Theodore Roosevelt to support this effort. Also in November, WCF Welfare Co-Chairs Rosemary Emigholz and Anna Ievolo asked WCF members and friends for donations of food staples to donate to St. Kilian’s Outreach in Farmingdale for Thanksgiving. The response was tremendous and on Tuesday, November 7th, 38 shopping bags were delivered to the Outreach Center. The Welfare Committee also continues to support St. Kilian’s Outreach with collections of paper goods at many of

the club’s meetings. At their November 16th Executive Board Meeting, the WCF hosted guests Lonnie Sherman, President and Founder of General Needs, together with his wife, Susan, and Rotary District Governor, Wendy Walsh-DeMaria. Sherman spoke about how his organization strives to help needy veterans and their families through direct Distributions with Dignity of basic living needs. After this meeting, WCF members and the Village Beautification Committee prepared the Village Christmas decorations by fluffing bows and stringing and replacing lights on wreaths, as needed, for the Farmingdale Village holiday season. In December, the WCF plans to visit the Madonna Heights Children’s Homeless Shelter to drop their collection of colorful shopping bags filled with clothes, toys, books, stuffed animals, PJ’s, warm hats and gloves to help brighten the Christmas season for these children.
