How to Make Use of a Jacket “Don’t seek, don’t search, don’t ask, don’t knock, don’t demand... relax. If you relax, it comes. If you relax, it is there. If you relax, you start vibrating with it.” - Osho Much of our suffering comes from our unwillingness to relinquish control. Everything from large sweeping intersections in our lives to the smallest details that plague us daily when they don’t go our way; we often operate under the faulty belief that we can use force, manipulation, or anger to bend the universe to our will. Coming up to New York after living in Florida, my nine year old son grew accustomed to living his life in t-shirts and shorts, unencumbered by the heavy winter gear that New Yorkers wear. As the weather has grown colder, he has been resistant to wearing his jacket, hat and gloves; instead insisting on layering t-shirts and sweatshirts. For weeks now, our morning routine has included me begging, pleading, warning him about getting sick, threatening to take away various priviliges, and at

times, shouting in exasperation. “JUST PUT YOUR JACKET ON!” In reality, the thought of him getting sick, or even what the bus driver or teacher would think of me were my motivating factors for my panic. It was my own discomfort about the situation. What I’ve realized is, ultimately, I don’t have control. My job as his parent is to empower him with love, values, ideas, compassion, and the information he needs to make the right decisions for himself. All I can do is sit back and allow him to experience the world. This morning, as we were waiting together for the school bus to arrive, I observed that my son’s hat and gloves were inside his backpack; his winter jacket slung over his arm. None of these items were actually on his body. I said, “Uh... you know, carrying a hat and gloves, and holding your winter jacket won’t keep you warm. They only work if you wear them.” He replied, “I know that.” I nodded my head in mutual understanding and said, “Okay, good. I just want to be sure that

you’re aware of how the whole process works.” He stared at me and let out a sheepish giggle. Slowly, he reached inside his backpack for his hat and placed the hat on his head for warmth. Then, as if to say, “I’m not doing this because you want me to. It’s my decision,” he slung his arms through his jacket. As a singular stance of independence, he skipped the gloves. I was okay with that. The allowing and the space of freedom it created caused my son to put on his hat and jacket. It was more effective than the begging, the pleading, the vague threats of catching a cold. In life, the more we try to control others or our circumstances and surroundings, the more our desired outcome eludes us. Be in a state of allowing. Just as you would allow the water from a babbling brook to seamlessly run through your fingers rather than trying to clench and trap the water in your hands, allow things to simply be as they are, and watch as your suffering diminishes.

They are in need of sorting volunteers to come to their Freeport location on one of their sorting days (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and help sort through all their current book donations. If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. If you’re interested in volunteering as a sorter, there is no need to reserve your space. Howitt Middle School teacher Patricia Caracappa introduced her Spanish language students to the fiesta called Día de los Muertos—Day of the Dead—widely observed from October 31-November 2 in Mesoamerican cultures. This particularly Mexican holiday is celebrated to remember family and friends who have passed away. To prepare for the holiday, people build altars in their homes, businesses, and schools— placing favorite foods and beverages alongside photographs of their departed loved ones—to invite their spirits to return and enjoy the essence of their offerings. Over the course of the three-day celebration, thousands of

people will visit cemeteries to clean gravesites and decorate the gravestones of beloved family members with orange marigolds— aka Day of the Dead flowers. Inside the cemeteries, people light candles, play guitar, and share meals late into the night. Markets are filled with sugar skulls, Pan de Muertos, skeletal decorations, and a special incense which is burned on the altars. Ms. Caracappa prepared a collaborative lesson for her eighth-grade students using poetry, art, and food to teach them about the many sides of the celebration. First, she had them write short poems to honor someone in their life who has passed. Then she arranged for a multistop field trip, beginning

at The Chocolate Duck on Main Street. There, students were tasked with decorating skulls with chocolate and sugar. These skulls—called calaveras— have become the most common symbol for the holiday. The fifth-grade class at Northside Elementary School performed a Veterans Day Salute on Friday, November 9th in their school auditorium. The students sang patriotic songs before an audience of parents, local veterans (VFW Post 516), and family/friends who are veterans. While the

children sang an armed forces medley, the veterans were invited to stand when they heard their theme song being sung. As part of the salute performance, the veterans were invited one by one to go on stage and introduce themselves and share when and where they served. Students also handed them

thank you letters that they had written for the occasion. The finale song was “God Bless America,” with all the students waving American flags. The beautiful tribute was Northside’s special way of thanking the all the local veterans for their service to the country.

Scientist Recognized By The Michael J. Fox Foundation Feinstein Institute for Medical Research Professor David Eidelberg, MD, won the fourth annual Bachmann-Strauss Prize for Excellence in Dystonia Research. Dr. Eidelberg received an unrestricted $100,000 grant for his use of innovative brain imaging techniques and computational algorithms to better understand the pathophysiology of this disorder and its treatment. Michael J. Fox and Todd Sherer, PhD, CEO of The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF), presented the prize at an MJFF event in New

York City on November 10, 2018. “I am honored to join the esteemed roster of Bachmann-Strauss Prize winners who are leading researchers in dystonia,” said Dr. Eidelberg. “With the financial support from MJFF, I can continue to better understand the cause and identify treatments for dystonia.” Dystonia is a movement disorder and a common symptom of Parkinson’s disease. Patients with dystonia experience involuntary muscle movements on a particular side of the body or all

over. The condition can be genetic or caused by damage to the nervous system. Those with the gene for dystonia do not always contract the condition, further adding to the mystery of this condition. Currently there is no cure for dystonia; the medical community can only treat the symptoms. Dr. Eidelberg was recognized for his pioneering work in using brain imaging and network modeling to identify abnormal brain circuits in people with dystonia. Using these novel techniques, he showed

how genetic mutations influence the development of dysfunctional brain circuits, and why some people with the mutation have symptoms of the disorder while others do not. His studies also provided insights as to the location and severity of symptoms in individual patients. This led to new image-based methods to evaluate individuals with different forms of dystonia and help objectively assess their response to treatment. Presented as part of the partnership between the Bachmann-Strauss

Dystonia and Parkinson Foundation and MJFF, the Bachmann-Strauss Prize broadens public awareness and recognizes key scientific discoveries in dystonia. The prize honors dystonia researchers for key scientific discoveries and provides incentive for the next generation of investigators to continue forging paths toward cures. “Dr. Eidelberg’s contributions to understanding Parkinson’s disease cannot be overstated,” said Kevin J. Tracey, MD, president and CEO of the Feinstein Institute. “His research

has opened important new avenues for mapping brain networks that are fundamental to understanding debilitating movement disorders.”
