The physical education-based program encouraged students to bring in at least one nonperishable item from home in order to participate in a series of athletic activities. The school community collected more than 3,000 items, to be donated to St. Killian’s food pantry.

On Saturday, November 16th, the Camp-Pa-QuaTuck Patrons transformed the Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck’s newly renovated dining hall into a Las Vegas casino floor in an effort to raise money for the camp’s special-needs programs. The event raised $6,400. More than 100 people attended the event, which featured unlimited access to exciting games such as blackjack, craps, and slot machines, which guests could play using “fun bucks.” A Chinese auction and a 50/50 raffle were also offered for those who wished to test their luck. Local caterers Island East Events and La Volpe Restaurant prepared an elegant buffet and passed hors d’oeuvres. A full bar and cocktail waitresses were also on hand to cater the camp’s guests. “We were very excited to host this very special

The Town of Oyster Bay will host two Saturday night prime time high school ice hockey contests this season as part of its High School Hockey Night in Oyster Bay series held at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Ice Skating Center on Stewart Avenue in Bethpage, according to Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto. Starting off the series will be the Massapequa Chiefs taking on the Syosset Braves on Saturday, December 14th at 8 p.m. The second contest, featuring the Cold Spring Harbor Seahawks and the Bethpage Golden Eagles, is scheduled for Saturday, February 1st, at 8 p.m. “These events, which are free to all Town residents, feature high school teams that are among the finest in Nassau County,” Supervisor Venditto said. “The players really look forward to competing at the Town of Oyster Bay’s

state of the art rink and we are always pleased to have them here.” Supervisor Venditto noted that Saturday night is a convenient time slot for people to attend the high school games. “Parents and friends of the players, as well as high school ice hockey fans, don’t always get to see these outstanding games because of other commitments during the week,” the Supervisor said. “That’s in large part, why High School Hockey Night in Oyster Bay is so special.” Ice hockey on Long Island is continuing to grow in popularity, producing accomplished players who have gone on to compete at very high levels. The two Saturday night games will showcase some of the best talent in the area. “Here’s your opportunity to catch the rising stars,” Supervisor Venditto said. “The entire family will be able to enjoy the top tier action on the

Tis’ The Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Tis’ the season for outdoing ourselves – in every way… for feasting for what seems like days on end, for running up the credit cards on gifts for all our friends and loved ones – and occasionally ourselves – for “decking the halls” with extravagant garlands and twinkling lights and precious ornaments… There are many who detest this time of year, for precisely these reasons. But I love it.

Bread Donations INN During recent assemblies at each of the elementary schools in the Plainedge School District, King Arthur Flour taught fourth- and fifth-graders how to bake delicious bread from scratch and donated

baking ingredients. Students and their families were then asked to voluntarily bake two loaves of bread together at home – one for themselves to share and another to be donated to a community

organization. The day for donations arrived in midNovember, and students at each of the schools brought in their completed loaves for donation.

The Plainedge School District Board of Education and administration, together with members of the high school’s student council, held a ribboncutting ceremony on November 14th in the high school library to mark

CREATIVE CHALLENGE - Eighth grade students enrolled at Farmingdale School District’s Howitt Middle School recently drafted a letter to a New York City judge in support of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Board of Health Department in their fight to ban oversized sugary beverages. As part of the curriculum, the students in Ms. Kuhner’s Family and Consumer Sciences class took a creative approach in addressing the growing crisis of food portion distortion that has become a reported cause for a concern in a nation battling obesity.

CULTURAL LESSON - Farmingdale School District’s Howitt Middle School social studies and English students recently learned about Puritan culture by participating in a re-enactment of the Puritan court. Students researched and acted out the roles of magistrates, witnesses and defendants, and also presented testimonies, passed judgments and acted out punishments. The activity provided students with a unique interactive experience, while also learning about the lives of the people in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the 1650’s.

I CAN RUN - Farmingdale School District’s Woodward Parkway Elementary School students recently participated in an interactive “I Can Run” Food Drive. The physical education-based program encouraged students to bring in at least one non-perishable item from home in order to participate in a series of athletic activities. On November 14th, Schwarting Elementary School in the Plainedge School District participated in the 2013 World Speed Stacking Association’s “Stack Up” event, which aimed to break the world record for the most number of students stacking at one time. Sport stacking can be an individual or team sport where participants of all ages and abilities stack and unstack 12 specifically designed cups, called Speed Stacks, in specific patterns. The sport has

been gaining in popularity in recent years and has made it into Plainedge gymnasiums this year thanks to Speed Stacking Ambassador and teaching assistant at Schwarting Nicole McMahon. Stacking is considered an educational and athletic game that facilitates fitness, handeye coordination, fine motor skills and bilateral coordination and improves cognitive function between the left and right sides of the brain. Schwarting is implementing cup

stacking for all students in the school, grades K-5. “It’s a phys ed based program that is implemented all over the world,” Ms. McMahon said of the sport. “It offers a different way to teach physical education and can even translate into the classroom.” More than 484,000 students from 36 countries and 2,800 schools participated in the event, which did in fact make the Guinness Book of World Records.

Manual Therapy Joint Mobilization Techniques Soft Tissue Mobilization & Myofacial Release FES (Functional Electrical Stimulation) Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilman Tom Donnelly to recognize officials from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the New York State Department of Environmental Control (DEC) for their roles in cleaning up our area following Superstorm Sandy. The representatives were given Proclamations from the Town honoring their

work, which was detailed in a brief presentation. The New York State DEC assisted the Town of Babylon in cleaning up over 300 oil spill locations throughout the Town of Babylon that resulted from Sandy. These spills were mainly a result of home heating oil tanks that had broken loose during the storm. The New York State DEC deployed their fleet of trucks to help vacuum up the oil and pump out damaged tanks and basements. The EPA worked

with the Town of Babylon’s Department of Environmental Control on a joint program to recover and pump out oil tanks, drums and containers, as well as other household hazardous wastes, from Superstorm Sandy. Residents were encouraged to place such items at curbside to be picked up by the Town to be disposed of correctly. This highly effective program helped keep thousands of gallons of hazardous material out of our waste stream and waters.
