The Village of Farmingdale is thrilled to welcome EmPower Solar to our community. The Ribbon Cutting celebration was fabulous with the Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce, local officials, Vision Long Island, among others. Empower Solar is expanding and hiring during the pandemic – which is amazing. They offer clean energy “Solar Solutions – Pair your panels with a car charging station to become one step closer to energy independence.” We are very fortunate that EmPower selected Farmingdale – a “green” Village. Just a few reminders, the Village is collecting nonperishable food donations to help those in need in our community. There is a food collection box at Village Hall for those that can donate non-perishable food to help locals in need in the community. Donations can be dropped off Monday – Friday between 9am and 3pm at Village Hall. During the COVID pandemic, St. Kilian Social Ministry is open for food assistance and to accept food and toiletry donations, on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9am – Noon. They are located at 140 Elizabeth Street, enter from rectory parking lot, facing Conklin Street. Additionally, there is
a donation box at Village Hall for Marine Toys for Tots, for donations of unwrapped toys for the holidays. Thank you for helping those in need in our community. The Meeting House of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), at 99 Quaker Meeting House Road in Farmingdale Village, has a rich history that stretches back to 1698. Thomas Powell, along with other settlers of the Bethpage Purchase, started meeting to worship in private homes in that year. Known as the Bethpage Preparative Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, the group built several meetinghouses over the years that were lost to fire. The current structure was moved across the road when Bethpage State Park was formed in the mid-1930’s and was re-built in 1992. The Quakers continue to meet today, holding Meeting for Worship every Sunday at 11 am. All are welcome for silent worship for one hour. In need of repair, the Meetinghouse building is slated for renovations soon. Donations would be gratefully accepted, by the Bethpage Prepatory Meeting. Social distancing and sanitary protocols will be in place to maintain the health and safety of all donors. To qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that volunteers eat well (low
fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. “Donating blood is a quick, easy, and safe process, and the pint of blood you donate will never be missed from your body, as it is quickly reproduced within your body,” Councilman Labriola added. “If you have family members or friends willing to donate, please ask them to support our effort this year, as this initiative is more vital than ever to help make sure that our local hospitals can meet the excessive demand during the coronavirus pandemic and continue to save the lives of as many people as possible.” For additional information regarding the Town’s Blood Drive, contact the Town Board Office at (516) 624-6304. Councilman Tom Hand recently announced that registration for the Town’s 2020-21 Winter Youth Ice Hockey Program and House League has begun at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. “The Town of Oyster Bay’s Youth Ice Hockey Program is one of the best games in town, and features many respected coaches dedicated to teaching this outstanding sport to the many boys and girls enrolled in the program,” said Councilman Hand. “As a hockey enthusiast
myself, I am proud to announce that the children who attend the program get the unique opportunity to hone their skating and hockey skills as part of a program that has earned recognition by the National Hockey League for its high level of quality.” Boys and girls, ages 6 – 16, interested in registering for the Winter Youth Ice Hockey Program must bring a copy of their birth certificate, proof of Town of Oyster Bay residency (tax or utility bill) as well as payment. All registrants must bring these items, even if they have participated in the past. A parent or legal guardian must be present at registration. Registration fees are $150 for ten weekly sessions. by the 92nd Street Y, a cultural center in New York City that has been instrumental in bringing diverse groups of people together with the goals of giving back through service. The 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation came together in 2012 to help form a day that was focused on the generosity of giving during the holiday season. Thus, Giving Tuesday was born. Technology and social media play a large role in uniting people for Giving Tuesday. Founding partners included Mashable, a technology website, Skype and Cisco, but the success of Giving Tuesday is thanks in large part to the general public, who have both spread the word and made their own contributions to charity. In 2017, Giving
Tuesday soared to new heights when technology mogul Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda, announced their foundation would match up to $2 million in donations to Giving Tuesday fundraisers started on Facebook. Facebook similarly waived its 5 percent fee for U.S.-based nonprofits all day long. The global Giving Tuesday movement helped raise more than $300 million online across more than 150 countries in 2017 alone. This year, the Giving Tuesday organization is poised to top their numbers and continue to improve upon the more than 46,000 participating organizations involved in their charitable efforts.
