Supporting Small Businesses Supporting small businesses ensures more money stays in the communities those businesses serve. The U.S. Small Business Administration says $48 out of every $100 spent at

a small business stays in the community. On the flip side, when a person spends $100 at a big-box store or a national chain, only $14 remains in the community. Local businesses are more likely to utilize other local

Largest ‘Cruise-Thru’ Toys for Tots Collection Drive Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand announced that the Town’s massive ‘Cruise-Thru’ Toys for Tots Collection Drive will take place at John Burns Park in Massapequa on Saturday, December 4th from 9am to 2pm (rain date is Sunday, December 5th). In partnership with the United States Marine Corps, the Town is collecting toys to help families impacted by the COVID-19 economic crisis and those less fortunate throughout the community during the upcoming holiday season. In addition to the ‘CruiseThru’, collection boxes are located at Town facilities through December 14th. Supervisor Saladino said, “The Toys for Tots Drive has long been a huge success under the leadership of the U.S. Marine Corps, especially here in the Town of Oyster Bay, as just last year we

smashed the previous year’s record in our toy drive collection. I encourage all of our residents who are able to donate to this amazing cause, as the Toys for Tots Drive helps ensure that disadvantaged children within our community do not have to go the holiday season without something to bring them happiness.” The ‘Cruise Thru Holiday Toy Drive’ will provide residents an excellent way to contribute directly to the cause and help bring a smile to a child’s face this holiday season. Additionally, the event will feature an appearance by Santa Claus, and a drop box where kids can drop their letters to Santa off at. Letters dropped off with a legible name and return address will be answered by Santa before the holiday. “Toys for Tots sends a message of hope to less fortunate children who

otherwise wouldn’t be receiving presents this holiday season. The holiday season sometimes arrives with a frenetic pace. At the dawn of the holiday season, there seems to be so much to fit into a relatively short period of time, including planning celebrations and shopping. The rush often begins the Friday after Thanksgiving on a day called Black Friday. Plaid Friday was born out of a recognition that the frenzied nature of Black Friday may not be for everyone. The event was created in Oakland, Calif., to transform holiday shopping for family and friends into a more connected, pleasurable activity than Black Friday. Plaid Friday promotes the diversity and creativity of local and independent businesses. On Plaid Friday, customers are urged to shop locally and enjoy choosing gifts in a more leisurely fashion. Ahead of the Veterans Day holiday and in recognition of the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola, Councilwoman Michele Johnson, Councilman Lou Imbroto, Councilman Tom Hand and Councilwoman Laura Maier joined with local Girl Scouts in delivering Hometown Heroes banners to veterans in communities throughout the Town of Oyster Bay. Earlier this year, banners were unveiled at parks throughout the Town in recognition of over 200 veterans and active duty personnel – both living and

Bright Future For Decorated Students AP Capstone award winners are required to conduct, present, and defend academic research on topics they are passionate about. AP Capstone is a diploma program first introduced in 2014. Capstone consists of two courses: AP Seminar, taken in the 10th grade, and AP Research, which can be taken in either 11th grade or 12th grade. Both courses must be taken to be eligible to receive the AP Capstone designation. To earn the Capstone diploma, students must score a three or better in both of these courses and a three or better in four additional AP courses. If a student earns greater than a 3 in the additional courses, they will graduate with an AP Seminar and Research Certificate. Eight students were awarded the AP Capstone Diplomas. Brianna Budhram, Emma Duffy, Ayla Irvine, Sherin Joseph, Ariana McGuinness, Kevin Piraino, Gabriella Sferlazza, and Sean Zaletel. Twelve students were awarded the AP Seminar and Research Certificate. AP Seminar is a yearlong course in which students investigate realworld issues from multiple perspectives. Students learn to synthesize information from different sources, develop their perspectives in research-

based written essays, and design and deliver oral and visual presentations, both individually and as a team. AP Research lets students deeply explore an academic topic, problem, or issue of interest to them. Students design, plan, and conduct a yearlong research-based investigation to address a research question, documenting their process with a portfolio. “We are extraordinarily proud of our students and the dedication and passion with which they approach their research,” said Nilfur Kelley, AP Research teacher. “They graduate from Farmingdale High School with skills they can and will use in their post-secondary studies and beyond.” AP Capstone is a diploma program provided through College Board. CT Project Delivers TIPS to Farmingdale Fire House YES Community Counseling Center’s Partnering In Action Change for Tomorrow Grant Initiative recently provided FREE TIPS Training to eighteen Farmingdale Fire Department Volunteers to ensure safe serving of alcohol during the recent Farmingdale Columbus Weekend Fair. TIPS (Training Intervention ProcedureS), a skills-based virtual or in-person training designed to prevent intoxication, drunk driving and underage drinking. is an approved alcohol training awareness program by the New York State Liquor Authority. TIPS may reduce exposure to alcohol liability lawsuits and reduce penalties for alcohol violations; lower insurance premiums; improve customer service and satisfaction; and promote community safety. The training is part of YESCCC’s Partnering in Action Change for Tomorrow (PACT) initiative to reduce binge drinking, intoxication and drunk driving. PACT’s TIPS Program is supported by Chambers of Commerce in Farmingdale, Massapequa, Levittown; Farmingdale Alcohol & Drug Abuse Prevention Team (ADAPT); Levittown Community Action Coalition (LCAC); Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC); Nassau County Police Department; Town of Hempstead; and the Town of Oyster Bay.
