What better way to kick off the Thanksgiving holiday than with a column by yours truly, everyone’s favorite fish. It’s been quite some time since my last contribution, and readers have been writing in to inquire as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing and the like. Well, I’m still swimming; perhaps a little more frayed and frazzled of late, but such is life. I’m happy to report that my Human finally got on board with the whole concept of heating my suite, making for a nice cozy atmosphere to spend the chillier months. You know us tropical fish – anything under 78º and I’m looking Continued On 7 for a sweater.
Speaking of, I seemed to be growing my own little fur coat of sorts over the last week or so, as my fins began sprouting tiny tufts of white fuzz. Apparently, this is not supposed to happen, and so my Human decided to overhaul my entire tank and redecorate with new gravel and a pretty little – emphasis on little – plant. My favorite feature of all, though, would have to be the tiny “betta hammock” which now hangs from the side, essentially a leaf attached to a suction cup. I suppose this was designed to replace my former, much larger, luxurious plant which I used to use as a pillow of sorts. I must say, though, it’s quite

Mercy Ball Set The Friends of Mercy Medical Center will hold their 80th Annual Mercy Ball on Saturday, December 3rd at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. More than 500 participants are expected. This year’s event celebrates Mercy’s many accomplishments, blessings and dedication within The Year of Mercy.
All proceeds from the 80th annual Mercy Ball will support the planned expansion and renovation of Mercy Medical Center’s Patio Grill. Located on the main floor, renovation plans include the doubling of dining space, new furnishings and decor, and has been designed to reflect a true café. This project
will enhance visitor experience and serve as a retreat for all who come to Mercy. Since Mercy’s founding over a century ago, proceeds from the Ball have helped to make it possible for the hospital to care for our community, including the less fortunate. “We are looking forward

Helping to Save Lives
“I am proud to recognize the Long Island Ballet Theatre on celebrating its 30th Anniversary of The Nutcracker in Huntington,” said Councilwoman Susan A. Berland. “I had the privilege of performing in one of their Nutcracker productions under the leadership of professional C h o r e o g r a p h e r Christopher Fleming and it was a great experience. It is always my pleasure to support the arts in our Town and this amazing Nassau BOCES Barry ballet company.” Tech held its first blood drive of the year earlier this fall, resulting in a significant contribution to the New York Blood Center. Barry Tech’s Medical Assisting students registered more than 200 prospective donors and collected 174 units of lifesaving blood. Additional drives will be held in February and April of 2017. “We are extremely proud of our students’ critical contribution to the blood drive,” said Barry Tech NUTCRACKER ANNIVERSARY - LIBT Board Member and Secretary Stephen Principal Peter Dalton. Barry Tech’s Medical Assisting program prepares high school students for continuing education and careers in the ever-expanding field of healthcare. Students in this course of study prepare for the national exam and work toward establishing themselves as certified medical assistants. The course is taught by teacher Joan Lambert, a Registered Nurse and Certified First Aid and CPR Trainer for The American Heart Association. Ms. Lambert has more than 20 years of experience has a healthcare teacher.

The Long Island Ballet Theatre was founded by Jan Hanniford Goetz, a gifted choreographer who envisioned a chambersized ballet company comprised of professional dancers and student dancers capable of dancing with noted professionals. After 30 years, they include professional dancers, pre-professional dancers and students that study

Dancing with Our Stars Gala North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center held its annual Dancing with Our Stars Gala on Friday, November 11th, at the Garden City Hotel. The evening included a cocktail reception followed by dinner, dancing, silent and live auctions, and a performance from our Dancing Stars. More than 260 guests

Farmingdale School District’s Howitt Middle School recently celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month to teach students about the value of diversity. Mrs. Caracappa’s 7th and 8th grade Spanish classes had the opportunity to learn about the Latino art influence in the United States in collaboration
with the Smithsonian American Art Museum via video conference. Experts from the Smithsonian American Art Museum led a discussion on great Hispanic artists and answered student questions about the role of art in culture and society. During the video conference students

learned about various works of art and how Hispanic American artists were inspired by Latin and American culture. This initiative is part of Howitt Middle School’s ongoing initiative to collaborate with museums around the country in order to celebrate Hispanic Heritage.

Spooky Spectacle teacher at FHS for his assistance. Mr. Sterler then approached Ms. Lynne Brewer, a retired teacher from FHS and present employee of the AHRC for ideas for the task, and a plan was set in motion. FHS wood shop students began cutting out pumpkins, ghosts, bats, head stones and leaves. The wooden models were then painted by the AHRC Nassau East Meadow Art Gallery. AHRC members
then painted the entire boat black and orange for the festivities. Teams from Farmingdale High School and AHRC Nassau met at the Nautical Mile in Freeport and began to apply decorations to the boat. This program is part of the Farmingdale School District’s ongoing initiative to collaborate with local community organizations and teach students the value of giving back.
SPECIAL CEREMONY - During a special ceremony students at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech learned about the origin of Veterans Day, presented their flag folding technique, thanked and honored veterans during the roll call of honor and heard their personal stories during a reception that followed.
SPOOKY SPECTACLE - Decorations created by Farmingdale High School students for a “Spooky Spectacle” at the Annual Freeport Halloween Parade. To make the boat spooky enough for the parade Farmingdale High School students created the Halloween-themed models in their wood shop class, collaborating with AHRC Nassau to paint the pieces as part of a District initiative to teach collaboration and the value of giving back.
