Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Lou Imbroto gathered with owners of Long Island pizzerias to present a $102,200 check to the Farmingdale School District from charitable funds raised during ‘Long Island Pizza Strong Day,” a fundraiser organized to benefit families affected by the Farmingdale High School Marching Band bus tragedy. “More than 100 pizzerias throughout Long Island participated in this fundraiser, agreeing to donate $5 for each pie sold to the families of those injured,
as well as the families of beloved educators Gina Pellettiere and Beatrice Ferrari, and the Farmingdale High School Marching Band,” said Supervisor Saladino. “This initiative was a great success, proving that Long Islanders’ love for pizza is the only thing that could match our love and support for the Daler community.” Following the bus accident, Anthony Laurino, the owner of Phil’s Pizza in Syosset and Massapequa, whose son is a member of the Farmingdale High School Marching Band, knew he had to act. He teamed up with Alyssa Guidice of Dine-
LI and Jim Serpico of Side Hustle Bread to launch Long Island Pizza Strong Day, and with the help of local pizzerias and generous business owners they raised over $100,000 through the fundraiser. “We thank Anthony and the organizers of Long Island Pizza Strong for bringing our community together during such a difficult time, and we thank all the local pizzerias throughout the Town of Oyster Bay and all of Long Island for participating in this important cause,” added Councilman Imbroto.
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand announced that the Town’s massive ‘Cruise-Thru’ Toys for Tots Collection Drive will take place at John Burns Park in Massapequa on Saturday, December 2nd from 10am to 3pm. In partnership with the United States Marine Corps, Optimum, and the New York Islanders, the Town is collecting toys to help families and those less fortunate throughout the community during the upcoming holiday season. In addition to the ‘CruiseThru’, collection boxes are located at Town facilities through December 14th. Supervisor Saladino said, “The Toys for Tots Drive has long been a huge success under the leadership of the U.S. Marine Corps, especially here in the Town of Oyster Bay, as just last year we collected close to 30,000 toys for Long Island children. I encourage all of our residents who are able to donate to this amazing cause, as the Toys for Tots Drive helps ensure that disadvantaged children within our community do not have to go the holiday season without something to bring them happiness.”
The ‘Cruise Thru Holiday Toy Drive’ will provide residents an excellent way to contribute directly to the cause and help bring a smile to a child’s face this holiday season. Additionally, the event will feature a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, and a holiday drop box where children can drop their letters to Santa off at. Letters dropped off with a legible name and return address will be answered by Santa before the holiday. “Toys for Tots sends a message of hope to less fortunate children who otherwise wouldn’t be receiving presents this holiday season. I urge residents, who can, to donate new unwrapped toys to any of our drop-off locations,” said Councilman Tom Hand. “By making a donation, you
can help ease the financial burden of our families in need this holiday season.” Toys for Tots Collection Boxes are located at the following locations: • Oyster Bay Town Hall North, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay; • Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa; • Ice Skating Center at Bethpage Community Park, 1001 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto announces that a special New York Islanders ‘Learn to Play’ Hockey Clinic is returning to the Town of Oyster for children ages 5 – 9. Part of The Future Islanders Program, this ‘Learn to Play’ clinic introduces the game of hockey to young children and serves as a transition program for first-time players interested in house leagues. “We are pleased to partner with the New York Islanders to offer this exciting clinic for children looking to learn the fundamentals of hockey in a fun environment,” said Councilman Imbroto. “This
Future Islanders program, taught by former players and coaching staff from the New York Islanders organization, includes hands-on training skills and all necessary equipment in the early stages of learning hockey.” Two sessions of the ‘Learn to Play’ clinic will be offered this winter. Residents can choose from a session at the SyossetWoodbury Ice Rink on Tuesdays from 4:30-5:40PM or the Marjorie Post Park Ice Rink in Massapequa on Wednesdays at 5:45PM. The Syosset-Woodbury program runs from December 5 - January 30, and the Massapequa program runs
from December 6 - January 31. With a registration price of $295, students receive full hockey equipment, including jersey, stick, gloves, helmet, shoulder pads, pants, shin guards, equipment bag and much more. Sessions will include special appearances by Isles alumni Arron Asham and Radek Martinek. Registration is now open and space is limited. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announces a Free Drive-in Holiday Experience, featuring free family entertainment for Town residents. The event will be offered December 6th – 10th at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa. “The Town’s free Drivein Holiday Experience will feature festive lighting displays, a walk-thru holiday village featuring the Massapequa Chiefettes, special appearances by friends from Arendelle and the North Pole, and will
feature many children’s favorite snowman in Olaf’s Frozen Adventure,” said Supervisor Saladino. This event is open to Town residents only, with registration online at www.oysterbaytown.com/ holiday, Residents must create an account on the Town’s portal to register for the event and reserve a time slot on either December 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th or 10th. What better ways to celebrate the diversity, uniqueness and creativity of independent, local businesses than by supporting them during the busiest shopping season of the year? Plaid Friday was conceptualized in Oakland, Calif., several years ago in an effort to encourage holiday shoppers to slow down and shop locally at small businesses rather than partake in the frenzy of the traditional Black Friday rush at big box retailers. Similarly, Small Business Saturday® was founded by American Express in 2010 as a community-centric day to support local businesses. Small Business Saturday was the catalyst for the generalized Shop Small® movement, which encourages consumers to patronize small businesses. Local businesses are at the heart of their communities. In a 2015 survey by the Urban and Land Institute, researchers found that more than half of respondents said they wanted a neighborhood where they wouldn’t need a car very often. More than 40 percent specifically noted the desirability of local shopping and entertaining as main features. A neighborhood with a Main Street or thriving local shopping hub can be
a big draw. Consumers make these neighborhoods a reality. Every time they grab a coffee from a local café, purchase a piece of artwork from a neighborhood artist or dine at a family-run restaurant, shoppers are supporting local business owners and strengthening their communities. Here are some ways to make shopping small a priority this holiday season. • Take inventory of Plaid Friday and Small Business Saturday sales by keeping up on local social media. Build holiday shopping lists around the offerings at local businesses. • Dine out at local restaurants or shop smaller food merchants. • Visit a local tree farm. When decorating for the holidays, support the farm or local nursery that grows Christmas trees and makes their own wreaths and garlands. • Keep your money in your community at a local bank or credit union rather than a large national bank. Local banks may have special promotions to boost savings for holiday gifting. The holiday season is the perfect time to support small, local businesses.

NFPA Urges Extra Caution When Preparing Your Thanksgiving Feast The National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) urges added caution when cooking on Thanksgiving Day, by far the leading day of the year for home cooking fires. In 2021, an estimated 1,160 home cooking fires were reported to U.S fire departments on Thanksgiving Day, reflecting a 297 percent increase over the daily average. “Thanksgiving is a hectic holiday with multiple dishes cooking and baking at the same time, along with lots of guests, entertaining, and other distractions that can make it easy to lose sight of what’s on the stove or in the oven,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA.
“With all these factors at play, it’s not surprising that the number of cooking fires spikes so dramatically.” Overall, cooking is the leading cause of U.S. home fires and injuries, and the second-leading cause of home fire deaths. Unattended cooking is the leading contributing factor in cooking fires and fire deaths. “Keeping a close eye on what’s cooking and minimizing the likelihood of getting distracted are key steps people can take to ensure a festive, firefree holiday,” said Carli. Following are additional tips and recommendations from NFPA to help cook safely on Thanksgiving:
Never leave the kitchen while cooking on the stovetop. Some types of cooking, especially those that involve frying or sautéing with oil, need
continuous attention. When cooking a turkey, remain at home and check it regularly. Make use of timers to keep track of cooking times,
particularly for foods that require longer cook times. Keep things that can catch fire like oven mitts, wooden utensils, food wrappers, and towels at least three feet away from the cooking area. Avoid long sleeves and hanging fabrics that can come in contact with a heat source. Always cook with a lid beside your pan. If a small grease fire starts, smother the flames by sliding the lid over the pan, then turn off the burner. Do not remove the cover because the fire could start again. Let the pan cool for a long time. For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed. Only open the door once you’re confident
the fire is completely out, standing to the side as you do. If you have any doubts or concerns, contact the fire department for assistance. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried. Hot foods and liquids should be placed away from table and counter edges. In addition, NFPA strongly discourages the use of turkey fryers that use cooking oil, which can cause devastating burns. For a safe alternative, NFPA recommends purchasing a fried turkey from a grocery store or restaurant or buying a fryer that does not use oil.
