On October 24th, the winners of Canstruction® Long Island 2013’s annual design competition were announced at its awards reception held at RXR Plaza in Uniondale. Nine teams of architects, engineers, designers, contractors, vendors, students and community groups built colossal structures made entirely of cans of food, which are donated to Long Island Cares, the Harry Chapin Food Bank. This year’s event collected over 32,000 cans. The winning structures for 2013 are: Juror’s Favorite and Best Use of Labels “Without Change, There Would be no Butterflies” Lines & Designs and Social Harmony Structural Ingenuity and Most Cans (6,048 cans) “Send Hunger Out of this World” H2M Architects and Engineers

Canstruction Champions talent and creativity of the professionals in the built environment,” said Tracy Lobdell, Executive Director, Canstruction® Long Island. “The teams have held fundraisers, solicited donations, and conducted raffles to raise the money needed to purchase the thousands of cans required to bring their designs to life. On the night of the buildout, they are given 12 hours to defy expectation, logic and gravity as they assemble these fantastic creations.” The exhibit, located at RXR Plaza in Uniondale, was open to the public every day from Friday, October 25th through Wednesday, November 6th, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The cost of admission was a can of food, which visitors used to cast their vote for the People’s Choice Award. State Conference Presentation Expectations for APPR, leadership in special education and college preparation for students with moderate disabilities were just some of the topics presented by leaders in the Nassau BOCES Special Education department at the Council for Exceptional Children’s New York Conference. The council is widely considered the gold standard of special education groups at both the state and national level. “ E d u c a t i o n Improvement for ALL” was the theme for this year’s conference that brought together a wide audience of administrators, educators and parents. Nassau BOCES, in collaboration with local universities and educational agencies, presented resources and solutions for navigating the education system for special education students. Presenters included Karen Ellis, Executive Director;

Dr. Joan Dituri, Assistant Director; Dr. Carmine Scerra, Assistant Director; and Dr. Linda Lopez, Psychologist. The presentations, listed below, covered three current issues in the field. Living With APPR And Making Data Meaningful How to collect and analyze growth rate data for students with disabilities as participants learn about APPR and expectations for typical growth for students with disabilities, and the Nassau BOCES STAR database project. Leading For Success In Special Education Contexts Special education policy ensures free and appropriate education in a least restrictive environment for students with disabilities. Practice, however, often marginalizes them. The presenters discussed the systemic improvement in a local district and

Mutual Inspiration

What to write… It’s funny, as you go through daily life, there are so many topics that seem worthy of a column; yet, when I actually sit down to write my weekly contribution to this newspaper, I am often at a loss for words. I recently received a letter from a supportive reader saying, in part, that he was writing “to let you know that indeed your words were read and inspired someone… as a humble writer myself, I know that is all we really want after all.” True enough. I must admit, when I first became interested in the field of Journalism, it was mainly due to the fact that I saw it as a wonderful cross-section of all those topics which interested me – English, History, perhaps some Political Science, Photography… really, the possibilities were endless. As elementary writing assignments

turned to full-fledged papers in middle school, followed by “true” journalistic work on my high school newspaper, I was sold on the career choice. This passion for the field only increased throughout college, as I was afforded the opportunity to explore various genres ranging from hard-hitting investigative pieces to in-depth features and profiles to the more subjective movie/music review. And then there was my senior Honors Tutorial and Thesis, a 50-page dissertation on the effects of September 11th on Journalism as a whole, for better or for worse. I had hopes of eventually expanding upon this mini-novel to broaden its scope into a book of sorts; but as time passed and the immediacy of the moment escaped our collective grasp, it seemed that hindsight would change the entire course of my research. And so it remained, 50 pages of reflection, compiled

between the Spring and Fall of 2003, preserved in hardcover. Fast forward to my job here, where I am fortunate to have the privilege to write this column weekly, and the freedom to choose my topics. Over 400 bylines later, there are times when choosing new material is difficult. Sure, there are plenty of sources – just an average day-in-thelife could probably generate a dozen or so possibilities – but not all inspirations should necessarily be captured in writing. Some are better left to the imagination, where they may one day flourish into more improved, developed ideas. In any case, the fact that I inspire anyone is truly appreciated. When you have a passion for your career, the hope is always that this comes through to others. Whether for an “A” in school, or a fan letter from a stranger…

DAY OF THE DEAD - Eighth grade students enrolled in the Farmingdale School District’s Howitt Middle School Spanish classes recently learned about “Dia de los Muertos,” a popular and spiritual Mexican holiday that honors the passing of loved ones. The traditional holiday annually takes place from October 31st to November 2nd. Students learned the history and origin of the “Day of the Dead” holiday through interactive online programs. The eighth-grade students also wrote letters to their deceased loved ones and learned a variety of culture, art and literature affiliated with the holiday.

Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Councilwoman Jacqueline Gordon recently joined with other Town and local officials to celebrate the start of Veterans Awareness Week, which honors our nation’s service-members and recognizes the sacrifices that they and their families have made. A ceremony was held at Town Hall with several local officials in attendance, including Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilman Tom Donnelly, New York State Senator Phil Boyle, New York State Assemblyman Robert Sweeney, County Legislator DuWayne

Gregory, Town Clerk Carol Quirk and Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma. At the ceremony, several local veterans were recognized for receiving medals from New York State honoring their service in defense of the country. These medals can be applied for through the office of Assemblyman Sweeney. Several students were also recognized at the ceremony as part of an essay contest where they wrote about ways we can say “thank you” to our veterans. There were six winners based on grade level who received Target gift cards. Also recognized at the event was Korean War

veteran George S. Walters, who recently received a diploma from Lindenhurst High School as part of Operation Recognition, which awards diplomas to those who left high school early to serve in the United States Military. Veterans Awareness Week is sponsored by the Town of Babylon’s Veterans’ Advisory and Steering Council Committees in conjunction with the Assemblyman Sweeney’s Office and the Babylon Town Board. Coschignano to announce the annual kick-off of this year’s “Toys for Tots” Collection Drive, which will run through December 15th, in an effort to collect new, unwrapped toys to be used as gifts for children in the community. “Run by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, the program’s mission is to help ensure that children in need in our area do not have to go without during this holiday season,” Councilman Coschignano said. “By helping those in need experience the joy of the holiday season, contributors will play an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable resources for the future, our children. Without collection drives like this one organized by the Town, many of the less fortunate in the Town of Oyster Bay would be forced to go without,” Councilman Macagnone said.
