We have had SUSS teams appear on News 12 and receive a national Character Education Partnership Award. Funding from the Long Island Community Foundation through its Youth Violence Prevention initiative has enabled CAPS to develop the website, expand the SUSS program, and share and publicize the work that school teams are doing towards creating safe school climates. “Now all Long Island students will be able to benefit from CAPS’ SUSS initiative, fostering positive school climates where all children can feel safe. All L.I. middle and high schools will have the opportunity to create a SUSS team and receive

CAPS announced today the launch of its SUSS (Students United for Safe Schools) website http:// suss.capsli.org to promote and expand its bullying prevention team building program for middle and high school students. This innovative program was designed and created through the CAPS Bullying Prevention Center and is the first of its kind in the region. SUSS teams are committed to changing school culture and reducing bullying and cyberbullying behaviors in their school communities. In the last three years more than 20 Long Island and Westchester middle and high schools have started a SUSS team. These teams have created public service announcements, posters campaigns, mentoring activities, and participated in national campaigns sponsored by GLSEN and

Well there it is. I hope you enjoyed autumn. Did you savor the glorious foliage on your drive to work? Did you pick enough apples and pumpkins to last you through your winter hibernation? Did you take in the requisite corn mazes and haunted houses and eat far too much Halloween candy in the process? Like it or not, once those leaves begin to brown and flutter to the ground en masse, autumn is officially past its peak. Forecasters are already beginning
to utter that dreaded four-letter word as the temperatures drop each evening. Heck, even some retailers seem to have hit fast forward, starting their “Black Friday” sales the day after Halloween this year. Um… did we miss something? As far as I’m concerned, “winter” is still a few weeks out. There’s still plenty of turkey and trimmings to be enjoyed, leaf piles to jump into and mum plants to admire. The shopping and decorating and wrapping and cooking can wait a bit. There will be plenty of time for all that over the next
month or so. And then… well, then it’s just plain old winter. Slow down. Savor. Repeat for next season. It’s not that difficult. Perhaps if everyone wasn’t in such a great rush, there would be more time to accomplish things. Mindset is everything. In the meantime, enjoy the cool, crisp autumn air as you rake your leaves and plan the Thanksgiving menu for next week. Be thankful we have four seasons to enjoy, and be thankful for all those whom you are blessed to share them with.

Adopt-A-Soldier The staff, residents and families of Island Nursing and Rehab Center collected food and other items to send to their new friends at the 106th Rescue Wing of Westhampton as part of the Adopt A Soldier program. The facility collected candy, gum, magazines, stamps, sunflower seeds, beef jerky, crossword puzzles, energy bars and granola bars, as well as financial donations to cover the cost of shipping. The items were collected and delivered this week to the 106th Rescue Wing so they could be mailed by the base to soldiers at a location that cannot be revealed due to security reasons. In addition to the goodies, residents of the
facility wrote letters to the soldiers, praising them for their work, saluting them, and offering them words of encouragement, comfort and gratitude. The 106th Rescue Wing deploys worldwide to provide combat search and rescue coverage for US and Allied forces. They are a world-class team of diverse, adaptable personnel recovery-focused war fighters. Island Nursing and Rehab Center, located at 5537 Expressway Drive North in Holtsville, is proud to be a leader in long term care, short term rehabilitation, subacute care, hospice and respice care. The residents of the facility, aged 40 to 100+. are extremely community-

Seven students from local elementary and middle schools were selected as winners of the contest, which focused on celebrating our veterans. Farmingdale School District Northside Elementary School fifth grade students Luke Pichichero and Douglas Hafner recently participated in a watercolor contest sponsored by the Knights of Columbus lodge #2142.
Both students’ art pieces will be included in the Lodge’s Scholarship Journal, which will be distributed at their Annual Gala Installation and Scholarship Dinner. The contest was organized by Mr. Ed Bochynski, former

Farmingdale School District’s Howitt Middle School 7th and 8th students recently held a memorial ceremony to honor life, family and the memories of loved ones as part of its celebration of the popular Mexican Holiday, El Dia de Los Meurtos (Day of the Dead).
The event gave students and teachers an opportunity to express their respects for relatives and iconic Hispanic figures that have passed away. The students in Mrs. Caracappa’s Spanish class created mini memorials in the form of poetry and art to pay homage to famous
