Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

There are many ways that individuals just like you can get involved with Long Island Cares. You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Please email licvolunteer@ licares.org for more information. Additionally, they are holding their annual Adopt-a-Family Thanksgiving Food Drive! This project involves others to volunteer their time to gather and bag items for families in need so they can have a filling Thanksgiving. This is the perfect opportunity for families, groups and students to get involved in their community. Long Island Cares has a goal of reaching
5,000 families and they need your help to reach that goal! They ask that you provide the following specific items in order to provide a Long Island family with a full Thanksgiving meal: - 4 cans of vegetables - 4 cans of fruit - 1 can of pumpkin or pie filling - 1 box/bag of stuffing - 1 box of mashed potato mix - 1 jar/can/packet of gravy - 1 can of cranberry sauce - 1 box of dessert mix (cake/cookie/ muffin) - OPTIONAL: Turkey (please put in a separate bag if you wish to donate this) Donations should be double bagged or in a reusable bag and delivered to their office located at 10 Davids Drive Hauppauge, NY 11788. Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations. In honor of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Walt Whitman, the Cultural Arts Committee of the Village of Farmingdale will host a special presentation and reading by distinguished Whitman scholar and author Karen Karbiener. The event, entitled “Starting from Paumanok: A Celebration of Walt Whitman, 18192019,” will appeal to lovers of history, literature, Whitman and Long Island alike. It is open to the public and free of charge, but RSVPs are requested to ensure adequate seating. It will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, December 8, at
Farmingdale Village Hall, located at 361 Main Street, in the lively Farmingdale downtown area. The poet Walt Whitman was born 200 years ago on May 31, 1819, in nearby Melville. He memorialized the island of his birth in the poem “Starting from Paumanok,” referring to the Native American name for Long Island. Dr. Karbiener will discuss Whitman’s poetry, as well as his little-known connection to the Village of Farmingdale (no spoilers here -- readers wanting to know more are invited to attend the event and hear for themselves).

Dr. Karbiener has published widely on Whitman, including an edition of Leaves of Grass, two audiobooks about Whitman’s life and influence, and a book introducing Whitman’s poetry to children. Toys For Tots Collection Oyster Bay Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone joined with Town Councilman Thomas P. Hand to announce the kick-off of this year’s “Toys for Tots” Collection Drive, which will run through December 12th, in an effort to collect new, unwrapped toys to be used as gifts for
children throughout the community. “Under the direction of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, the Toys for Tots Drive follows a mission to help ensure that disadvantaged children within our community do not have to go the holiday season without something
to bring them happiness,” Councilman Hand said. “By helping those in need experience the wonderful embrace of the holiday season, contributor’s will get to play an active role in bringing happiness to one of our nation’s most valuable resources for the future, our children,”
