The Farmingdale School District community has voted to approve a $36 million bond to build Long Island’s premiere public school district sports complex and aquatic center and redevelop the playing fields at each of its six schools. With debt service costs related to the bond timed to coincide with the fulfillment of older, larger debt service payments, Farmingdale residents will see a lowering of taxes with the approved bond. Leadership Conference Girl Scouts of Nassau County announced today its upcoming “Golden Flight to Leadership Conference and Reception” will be held on Saturday, November 12th, at Long Island University (LIU). This event will serve as a culmination of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s yearlong celebration of the Gold Award’s 100th Anniversary, and it will feature workshops, a celebratory reception, and three esteemed speakers offering insight on female empowerment. Attendees will include Girl Scouts in grades seven through twelve, Girl Scout

alumnae, community volunteers and parents. “The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can achieve. We are extremely excited to celebrate the achievements of these incredible young women and acknowledge the positive impact they have had on communities throughout the United States,” said Girl Scouts of Nassau County Chief Executive Officer Donna Ceravolo. “We are immensely grateful to both Long Island University for hosting with us, and our two sponsors Northwell Health System and Wells

Fargo for making this event possible.” During the event there will be two workshop tracks - one for adults and one for girls. The adult track will cover topics such as Finding Balance, The Power of Acceptance and Social Media Presence. The girls’ track will focus on Girl Empowerment, Applying to College and a self-image workshop titled, Everything Isn’t Perfect and That is Ok. The attendees will also hear from renowned speakers Shefali Tsabary, a clinical psychologist and acclaimed author; Sara Intonato, a self-made

Shore LIJ University Hospital, and Wells Fargo. Northwell, which will provide $20,000 toward the event, has a long a history of supporting Girl Scouts, including a partnership that allowed 20 Girl Scout Seniors to attend a full week of Career Exploration Camp at the hospital to be immersed in the many career opportunities within the medical industry. Northwell has sponsored Girl Scouts of Nassau County events in the past, including the Annual Luncheon. Wells Fargo, who will provide a $10,000

entrepreneur; and Sylvia Acevedo, an engineer and the interim CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA. Dr. Tsabary will give the keynote address. The event was made possible by a partnership with Long Island University. LIU has hosted Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s annual meetings as well as Adult Recognition events. November. No sooner has the last of the Halloween candy been given out to the neighborhood trick-ortreaters, than we are faced with the prospect of preparing for the next festive occasion on the calendar… Christmas, apparently. Year after year, the interval of time between the two seems to evaporate into a void of shopping, decorating, cooking and caroling, forgetting the small fact that there exists another holiday in between. I understand that, for some, Thanksgiving doesn’t have the same “fun” appeal to children and adults alike. There are no costumes, no Santa Claus, no presents to speak of… and yet, that is precisely what makes the day so uniquely special.

The entire point, in fact, is to be grateful for that which we have – family, friends, health, happiness – and not be caught up in the materialism that tends to overtake every other occasion. It’s not about the meal, or the football, or the Black Friday shopping deals that continue to creep into Thursday; it’s about the company you spend the day celebrating with. This is the case no matter the holiday, of course; but on Thanksgiving, we tend to step back and appreciate it just a bit more. Or we should. So to all those who enjoy shopping at the mall while being serenaded by Christmas carols over the stores’ PA systems… there will be plenty of time for that beginning on November 25th. Until

then, let’s try to enjoy the remainder of Autumn, the harvest season. Let’s work on planning our Thanksgiving menus and football-watching marathons if we must; but mostly, let us all work on finding things to be thankful for in our lives. Trust me, the Christmas sales and songs will still be there at the end of the month. The spirit of giving doesn’t need to coincide with actual, tangible gifts, nor does it need to wait for any particular occasion. It’s a feeling, an attitude, a sense of appreciation which should be embraced no matter the time. Sure, things can always be better; but they can also always be worse. Thanksgiving is as good a time as any to remember this.

The LIHS meets monthly at Planting Fields Arboretum and offers year-round educational programs, events and tours of gardens here and abroad. Membership is open to all Long Island gardeners whether they are professionals, enthusiastic amateurs, or just like to stop and smell the roses.

After 19 years as Senior Pastor of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Farmingdale, The Reverend Rodney L. Eberhardt has retired. Pastor Eberhardt was born in Deshler Nebraska and studied at St. John’s Junior College in Winfield Kansas. There he met his wife Mitzi Cook. Pastor then studied at the Concordia Seminary in St. Louis and The Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago. He was ordained to the Holy Ministry on January 6th, 1979. His first posting was as Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Amherst New York where he served for 18 years. In December of 1997, he was called as pastor of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Farmingdale. In his 19

years, he was involved in many inter-generation activities, and oversaw a major renovation of the sanctuary, education wing and the restoration of St. Luke’s stained glass windows. He was instrumental in the expansion of the campus with the purchase of the adjacent Chase Bank Building which is now called St. Luke’s Parish Activities Center (PAC). For 16 years, Pastor has also been the Dean of The Society of the Holy Trinity. He served for 18 years on the Board of Directors of the American Lutheran Publicity Bureau. He helped with the development of and served on the board of the Farmingdale Adult Day Care Center.

Hundreds of people attended Pastor’s last service on October 23rd. Helping him celebrate were the Pastors and choirs of St. Killian’s, St. Thomas Episcopal and the Farmingdale Methodist Church. Following the service, a gala dinner was held in the PAC center where he was awarded certificates of appreciation by Mayor Ekstrand of Farmingdale and State assemblyman Saladino. A grateful congregation named him as Pastor Emeritus and raised a plaque in his honor. Pastor Eberhardt and his wife will be retiring to their home outside of Atlanta Georgia. All wish him a wonderful retirement and a well deserved rest.

As part of its Red Ribbon Week program, students at Schwarting Elementary School in the Plainedge School District joined millions of students nationwide in their commitment to make positive choices. In celebration, students engaged in a variety of

activities throughout the week, including a “teamwork” day with a presentation from the New York Islanders and a Plant the Future Day, which was sponsored by the school’s PTA. As part of Plant the Future Day, all students K-5 wrote positive messages on two large

Following the race, the awards ceremony will take place at 12:30 p.m. with awards being given to the top male and female runners along with the top runners in various age categories. A health expo will also be available during the event open to all participants as well as music for everyone to enjoy afterwards. The Healing Heart 5K hopes to raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of men and women across the country and here on Long Island. The event creates

a culture of health and physical activity, giving families the opportunity to participate in heart healthy activities together.
