Farmingdale Music Teacher Strikes A Chord With Students

FARMINGDALE MUSIC TEACHER STRIKES A CHORD WITH STUDENTS Howitt Middle School music teacher Mr. Samuel Gelfer was invited by the ASTA chapter (American String Teacher’s Association) at Hofstra University to speak to current music education majors. Mr. Gelfer reflected on his experience in Farmingdale teaching at every grade level, highlighting the differences and similarities between them. He also shared his experience as a published composer and how that continues to shape his teaching. “It was very rewarding to stand in front of the future of music education and share my story,” said Mr. Gelfer. “I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity.”

The Farmingdale Halloween Parade & Family Fun on the Village Green was held on Saturday, October 28th, with warm, summer like weather. Many in the community enjoyed marching and seeing the parade along Main Street, and the amazing Halloween costumes. The

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board joined with the Oyster Bay-East Norwich School District and hundreds of local residents in dedicating ‘Billy Joel Way’ and presenting a ‘key to the town’ to legendary musician and environmental advocate Billy Joel. Officials, including Councilwoman Michele Johnson, Councilman Tom Hand, Councilwoman Laura Maier, Councilwoman Vicki Walsh, Town Clerk Rich LaMarca, Receiver Jeff Pravato, as

well as County Legislator Rose Marie Walker, also welcomed members of the Oyster Bay-East Norwich School District’s 6th Grade Advanced Band from James Vernon School, whose students performed for the music icon. “Nothing chronicles the stories of our lives quite like music, and no one has told the story of what it was like to grow up here on Long Island quite like Billy Joel,” said Supervisor Saladino. “His lyrics speak for every one of us. We identify with

him, and because of him, we all know that we share many of the same feelings, thoughts and experiences. In many ways, he brings us together as suburban Long Islanders.” As a humanitarian, The Joel Foundation has made and pledged over $7 million in charitable donations with a focus on music education and humanitarian aid. While he has supported countless vital global relief efforts, Joel has often turned his attention to helping Long Islanders, as evidenced by

Long Island Cars Fall Harvest Car Show & Swap Meet

On Sunday November 19th, “Long Island Cars” will present the “Fall Harvest” Car Show and Swap Meet on the scenic grounds of Flowerfields Fairground in Saint James. Hundreds of classic and collectible automobiles including show cars from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, one-ofa-kind custom cars, antiques, exotics, muscle cars, street rods, trucks and imports will be on display. Acres of vendors will be well stocked for this large end of the

season show, where you can buy, trade, sell or swap automobile parts, equipment, accessories,literature and collectibles; plus a wide variety of cars will be for sale in the “Car Corral.” You’ll experience live music entertainment, fun fair food and more. There is something for every member of the family to enjoy. F l o w e r f i e l d Fairgrounds is located on Parkside Drive off Route 25A in St. James.
