According to MIT, the movement to vote by mail reached new levels with the 2020 elections, which occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some attest that mailin-voting enables many individuals who would not normally be able to physically make it to the polls on Election Day to cast votes. Mailin balloting works in different ways. The United States has universal voteby-mail and absentee balloting. With the former, ballots are mailed to all voters. In the latter, voters must request an absentee ballot. In terms of a requested absentee ballot, a voter must write, call, or request a ballot online. Upon

receipt, the voter will make his or her choice, and then place the sealed ballot in a security envelope provided with the ballot. The voter signs the outside of the second envelope to certify that he or she is a registered voter. When the election authority receives the ballot, it certifies the registration of the voter and that the address matches the one on record with the election authority. On Election Day, the mail ballots are added to the results of the votes with those from people who visited the polls in person. According to the Brookings Institution, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C. that works to improve policy and governance at local, national, and global levels, there is no partisan advantage to either party related to voting by mail. Each Election Day, Americans vote and thus participate in a fundamental principle of democracy. Elections take place on various levels, from local governments to presidential elections. Until recently, to cast a ballot for a particular election, most voters had to physically appear at their respective polling locations and submit their votes in person. Mailin voting, also known as absentee voting, was frowned upon and not widely available. It first arose during the Civil War, when soldiers were allowed to cast ballots from the battlefield. Absentee voting later became an issue during World War II, when Congress passed laws in 1942 and 1944 enabling soldiers stationed overseas to participate in elections. More recently, during the 1980s, more

Dr. Rodgers believes that she will enjoy a complete recovery and return to the great passions of her young life. “Audrina serves as a member of the Farmingdale Fire Department’s junior brigade and will certainly be able to continue with her dream of becoming a full-time firefighter and EMT,” said Dr. Rodgers. One highlight of the reunion was a surprise visit from flight paramedic Amen Alhadi and flight nurse Michael Bosi, the SkyHealth team who airlifted Audrina to Cohen Children’s. After exchanging comforting hugs, Mr. Bosi said: “It’s not often to get

to meet one of the patients we’ve brought to the hospital. We’re so happy that you’re doing well and hopeful that you will continue with your dream of becoming an EMT.” “I’ve come a long way and there’s still a long way to go,” said Audrina, who said that she, along with others who were injured that night, continue to fight on in memory of their beloved teacher. “We know Mrs. P. would want us to keep trying to get better,” Audrina said, often fighting back tears. “I’m here today because of my friends and my family. I will get through this. I’m strong now.” After her mother handed green Daler high school T-shirts to the flight crew and Dr. Rodgers, Ms. Crocitto concluded by saying, “When you go through a trauma like this, your whole mindset changes. I realize now how many people love me. I’m so grateful to be here.”

It’s been a difficult month for 15-year-old Audrina Crocitto, who survived the bus crash carrying members of the Farmingdale High School marching band on September 21st. But thanks to a specialized team of professionals and her determination to survive, Audrina was able to return to Cohen Children’s Medical Center today by walking unassisted with her loving family by her side. The crash injured dozens of students and killed the school’s band director, Gina Pellettiere, 43, and retired teacher Beatrice Ferrari, 77. Audrina, who only remembers the initial impact of the bus careening off the road, was severely injured from the accident. “Audrina was airlifted to us almost immediately,” said Shaun Rodgers, MD, the pediatric neurosurgeon who cared for Audrina. “X-rays and MRIs revealed

The Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit the Island Harvest Food Bank will take place on Friday, November 17, 2023, from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM at Bethpage’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage. This year marks the 15th anniversary of Long Island’s largest oneday food drive which to date, has donated more than 45,000 turkeys and over 200,000 pounds of food over 15 years to Island Harvest which helps supply Thanksgiving holiday meals to families in our community. Long Islanders are asked to donate frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items or cash donations. Bethpage’s Drive Through Donation Lanes will allow residents to remain in their cars while volunteers remove donations from the vehicles. The donations will go directly to Island Harvest Food Bank, which will help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than 300,000 foodinsecure Long Islanders through its distribution network of over 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other feeding programs on Long Island. Non-perishable food items needed include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices, and shelfstable milk (please, no glass containers). For the first time, Bethpage is issuing a Corporate Challenge encouraging local businesses and organizations to donate the largest amount of frozen turkeys and nonperishables and then drop off their donations on November 17. The business that provides the largest donation will be

sent an ice cream truck to their location for all employees to enjoy. To join the challenge, Long Island businesses and organizations can sign up here. “Bethpage is focused on enriching the lives of the communities we serve and we are able to accomplish this by collaborating and partnering with businesses across Long Island. About 70,000 individuals receive food assistance from the Island Harvest Food Bank network each week. The buddy pairs remain together throughout the program year to allow relationships and skills to develop that can transcend the boundaries of the library and carry over into school and social settings. Many students and “buddies” choose to remain paired up together year after year for the duration of their time in the program. As the individuals with special needs get older, many ask to participate as a buddy to help provide a younger child with an experience they will always remember. Each year the program culminates with an end-of-the-year party which features a video recording highlighting the year’s activities. During Triple P program sessions, parents are provided an hour of respite in which they share information and resources with each other. They provide comfort and understanding having experienced many of the same feelings, issues, and experiences. This networking is an invaluable advantage to the program and one that is not easily obtained in other settings. At the teen level, a video game club is also run on a

weekly basis and promotes teamwork, problem solving, and critical thinking skills. The participants play games in small groups and rotate from game system to game system while supervised by a librarian and teen volunteers who help encourage socialization and model appropriate game play. Each spring a dance is held to provide a “promlike” experience complete with a DJ and dancing, refreshments, limousine rides, and a photographer to capture all the special moments. The attendees are encouraged to dress up for a night where they are the center of attention. Triple P – Peer Pal Program – was established in September 2015 (replacing the previous “At My Fun Place” Program) and meets weekly on Monday evenings from September-May. This recreational program pairs individuals with special needs with neurotypical teen volunteers for an hour of fun activities such as music therapy, game playing, arts & crafts, therapy dogs, cooking lessons, karaoke, video game playing, physical fitness, live performances and more all designed to encourage teamwork, socialization, and acceptance. Participants are paired with “buddies” that are close in age, in the same grade level, or share similar interests and who can guide them happily and successfully through the activities in a loosely structured environment.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announced a partnership with Massapequa-based “Big Hy for Heroes” in an effort to collect DVDs for those deployed and serving overseas in the United States Armed Forces as well as movies for children’s hospitals. Donations will be accepted November 1st through November 30th and then delivered to Chaplains, Commanding Officers, Sergeant Majors and Sergeants around the globe to distribute to troops and arrange movie nights this holiday season. Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner with Big Hy for Heroes for our 5th Annual DVD Collection Drive and send thousands of DVDs to troops serving around the globe as well as to children receiving care in local hospitals. Help support these brave men, women and children by

donating DVDs.” The Big Hy for Heroes organization was founded in 2002 by Massapequa resident and WWII veteran Hyman Strachman who, along with his son Arthur Strachman, personally began sending DVDs to U.S. troops overseas. Estimates from the Department of Veterans Affairs indicate that there were around 19 million veterans in the United States in 2021. Veterans Day, observed each year on November 11, honors all those who served honorably in the U.S. military during both wartime and peacetime. Data from the VA indicates that, as of 2016, Gulf War veterans account for the largest share of all U.S. veterans. Roughly 7.8 million veterans served during the Gulf War. Vietnam

veterans also make up a sizable percentage of U.S. military veterans, as VA estimates indicate there were approximately 5.9 million veterans who fought in the Vietnam War in 2021. Though veterans need not have served in wartime in order to be recognized and honored on Veterans Day, the vast majority of U.S. veterans served during wartime. According to the VA, 78 percent of veterans in 2021 had served during wartime.

Once upon a spooky Saturday, the halls of Farmingdale High School transformed into a Halloween haven, enchanting all who entered its doors. The rain may have tried to dampen the season’s spirits, but it was no match for the indoor extravaganza, the 3rd Annual Safe Halloween Event. Pint-sized cuties in

costumes galore flocked to this bewitching bash, eager to trick or treat their way through a maze of elaborately decorated halls, each themed to perfection. The students’ creativity knew no bounds, from Minion Mayhem to Fairytale Forest, Toon Town to Hoedown Town, Medieval Castle to Superhero City, Space Adventure, Under the Sea,

Candyland, and Dias de los Muertos. But it wasn’t just the decor that made this event so spooktacular. Farmingdale High School theater students dressed in full costume stepped into character and interacted with their visitors, posing for pictures and handing out candy with glee. After the trick or treating, families entered the gymnasium, where the students had

planned dozens of fall activities, from arts and crafts to dancing, and many Instagram-worthy photo opportunities at every turn. It takes a lot of magic to pull off an event like Safe Halloween, and the theater program students spent weeks carefully planning every detail, with many groups coming together to bring their vision to life. Congratulations to

Farmingdale High School’s Art Honor Society, Real Harmony, Thespian Honor Society, Playcrafters, Spanish Honor Society, and the PTA for helping make this event a spellbinding success. “Safe Halloween is not just a fun event for the community, but a chance for our students to showcase their talent and passion for the arts,”

Dalers Spooked And Delighted Farmingdale High School’s Safe Halloween Event Was A Scream said Glen Beck, theater teacher at Farmingdale High School. “I couldn’t be prouder of them. Our students worked tirelessly to make sure every detail was perfect, and it truly paid off.” We hope everyone had a wickedly good time at Safe Halloween, and we can’t wait to see what the students conjure up for next year’s event.
