The Farmingdale Dalers won their homecoming game against the Syosset Braves, by a score of 280. Spirited Farmingdale football fans reveled in the beautiful autumn evening to watch the game and the halftime performances— which were nothing short of spectacular. “The game was won by tremendous defense all night long,” said Head Coach Buddy Krumenacker. “Many opportunities were created by consistent defensive play which set us up for great field play. Not to mention, we are Dalers!” At halftime, the Homecoming Court was announced, with senior, Hope Costidis, being crowned Homecoming Queen, and senior, Michael Barletta, named Homecoming King. Emotional Resilience “Don’t promise when you’re happy, don’t reply when you’re angry, and don’t decide when you’re sad.” - Ziad K. Abdelnour What does it mean to be resilient? For some, it’s the idea of bouncing back quickly after adversity. For others, it is the ability to remain stoic. Some see it as simply ones’ ability to face another day. My own definition may be counter-intuitive to some, but it is the courage to feel negative emotions, allowing the discomfort to effect you, grabbing the kernels of wisdom a negative experience brings, and then embarking upon the healing process and honoring whatever form it takes. I think it is a gross human misconception that to cry, to punch a pillow, to feel hopeless, to declare that the world is coming to an end, or any other things you need to do in the midst of grief or profound disappointment, somehow makes you not emotionally resilient. People have always observed me to be great at “bouncing back.”
What they don’t see is that I took the time I needed to be a complete mess! Yes, I said it. I take the time I need to honor the negative emotions, to give them their chance to have a field day. Then I dust myself off and move forward, feeling cleansed and renewed. It’s all part of the process. It’s a myth that strong people don’t cry. Can we put that one to bed right now, please? Those heavier, denser emotions are part of the learning experience, and they are necessary. With that being said, so is stacking the deck in your favor toward healing. Below is my cheat sheet for making it through tough, upsetting or scary times: Take a moment to STOP, look around and assess your immediate surroundings. Ask yourself if you are in any danger right in that moment. Chances are, the answer is no. Next, focus on 5 things you see around you. Then focus on 3 things you can feel around you (tactile). Third, focus on one thing you can smell. Fourth, focus on one thing you can hear.
Play classical or jazz music. I find that both of these genres of music have a soothing effect on the emotional part of the brain. Picture yourself as a character in a movie. The people around you are the supporting players. Think of the crisis before you as the script (the plot), and you as delivering the ultimate Oscarworthy performance. After all, life is a grand illusion anyway, and it is a safe bet to assume that you have starred in many other dramas, as well as some great comedies, in your lifetime. Go do something you enjoy. No matter how despondent you may feel, tell yourself you are going to take a short break from being “you,” and simply go do something enjoyable. Take a run, ride a bike, eat an ice cream cone, watch a funny movie, bake cookies, call an old friend, do something romantic with a significant other. I promise you, your problems can wait an hour. Lastly, when you do bounce back, pay it forward and use that newfound wisdom to help someone else.

This month, sites in the Farmingdale area will be among 5,000 U.S. dropoff locations collecting shoebox gifts for children overseas, during Operation Christmas Child’s National Collection Week, from November 12th through the 19th. The Maurer Foundation is a local nonprofit organization that has been for over serving the community 20 years. Their mission is to save lives through breast health education that focuses on breast cancer prevention, healthy lifestyle choices, early detection and risk reduction. Since their founding in 1995, they have reached almost 350,000 high school and college students, parents, coworkers and neighbors with lifesaving information on breast health, expanded their reach internationally, training their first breast health educator from outside the United States, annually educated over 200,000 people across the world on their website and trained breast health educators in local nursing programs, exponentially increasing their impact on Long Island. This October, The Maurer Foundation has schedueld 132 breast health programs, reaching 3,300 people with life-saving information on breast selfexams, breast cancer risk factors, risk reduction, myths, facts, mammogram guidelines and more! The purpose of the Development and Social Media internship is to assist the Development Department in creating a strategy to increase community awareness of the Foundation’s mission through an enhanced social media presence. L.I.’s New State-of-the-Art Cancer Treatment Facility New York Cancer & Blood Specialists (NYCBS) held a ground-breaking ceremony for its new state-of-the-art cancer treatment facility, located minutes from the ferry and Long Island Railroad in Port Jefferson Station, on October 10th, 2018. The modern facility will be the most advanced, patientfriendly cancer treatment center of its kind on Long Island. Commanding a footprint of 15,000 square feet, this unique facility was designed to treat the whole patient, not just their cancer. It offers everything they need to fight cancer, in one convenient location, and right in their own backyard. Dr. Jeffrey Vacirca, CEO of NYCBS, explains the vision behind the center. “Through 40 years of treating and actually listening to our cancer patients, we understand what they need and want in cancer care. Top quality medical treatment, of course, but also comprehensive services and emotional support services, and access to promising clinical trials. They also want a facility
that is closer to home so they don’t have to travel when they’re sick. This is what NYCBS communitybased care is all about. We’ve been providing our neighbors with these support services all along. but now we can do all of this—and much more— under one roof.” With all the amenities a NYCBS patient has come to expect-- like comfortable furniture, warm lighting, soft blankets and a kind, attentive staff for much needed emotional support—the new NYCBS center is designed to nurture and streamline patient flow so patients don’t have to wait. With the most cuttingedge medical technology and equipment, including the most advanced PET/CT Scans and MRI machines to provide superior imagery for diagnostic purposes, as well as medical and radiation oncology services, inhouse radiology and infusion services, the new NYCBS center addresses all of the patient’s medical needs in one building. To facilitate better patient outcomes, the NYCBS center will also
offer a multi-faceted wellness program staffed by nurse educators, psychologists, and other experts, ready to provide nutritional, emotional, financial, psychological and spiritual guidance for patients. These support services are unique to community-based cancer care and demonstrate NYCBS’s commitment to conquering cancer. The lab’s CLEP license will allow it to take and process outside specimens (blood, biopsies, etc.). With the new facility located next to the lab, cancer patients will receive their results in record time. The new facility will also feature the latest in clinical trials and immunotherapy. As a symbol of hope, NYCBS will be planting a tree to remain lit throughout the year in colors representing different cancers treated each month. Joining NYCBS to plant this tree will be patients, doctors, staff, Sheriff Errol Toulon, and local politicians Congressman Lee Zeldin and Town Supervisor Ed Romaine.

GROUNDBREAKING CANCER CARE - New York Cancer and Blood’s (NYCBS) new state-of-the-art cancer treatment facility in Port Jefferson Station, New York.
On October 16, 2018 Senator John Brooks awarded the 2018 New York State Senate Empire Award to Eileen Scanlon, founder of Scanlon’s Traveling Salon. This traveling salon serves not only paying customers, but provides free services for those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses and assisted living communities. Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is extra unique because Eileen always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only
vegan products. Senator John E. Brooks is the New York State Senator for the 8th District, representing portions of Nassau and Suffolk Counties along the South Shore of Long Island. The New York State Senate Empire Awards recognize excellence in business in this New York Senate District. One of the requirements each year’s recipient must meet is that their business must have created a culture of philanthropy and the recipient must volunteer their time and services, demonstrate exceptional leadership in the community, conduct virtuous ethical practices, green practices, outstanding service, or have contributed significantly to their community’s quality of life. WALK 97.5’s “Don’t Text & Drive” WALK 97.5 has announced that it will have a new slogan for Thursday, October 25, 2018. “WALK 97.5, Don’t Text and Drive” will replace regular station messaging for the day in an effort to remind Long Islanders to be safe behind the wheel. According to the NHTSA, 391,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers in 2015. WALK 97.5 will urge Long Islanders to put their phones down while driving. “We know the law prohibits texting and driving, yet many
Long Islanders can’t seem to help themselves. Our hope is that hearing the message from their favorite radio station may make people think twice, and hopefully change their behavior,” said Tommy Conway, Program Director of WALK 97.5. Connoisseur Media Long Island Market Manager, Jim Condron added, “Radio has the power to reach so many people, so we need to make sure we do everything we can to help the community. If we can prevent one accident it will be worth it.”
