Three Nurses Earned Daisy Award For Extraordinary Care

Three St. Joseph Hospital registered nurses recently received the DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. Lacey Mantovani, RN, Tatiana Morisseau, RN, and Heather Ribera, RN, all of the hospitals critical care unit, were nominated by patients and/or their families for providing compassionate care, going above and beyond and for staying true to Catholic Health’s I-CARE Values (Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence). The three nurses are part of a special cohort as they represent the inaugural Daisy Award winners at St. Joseph Hospital. Nominations for the Daisy Award opened this summer. “I’m excited to roll out the Daisy Award at St. Joe’s as it offers another avenue to recognize the incredible work that our

Although I was very happy my mom was awake, there were still concerns I had before my mother was to be discharged; things that most people wouldn’t understand. It made me feel understood when I talked to Heather, very sweet and understanding. She is an

amazing nurse. She is going on maternity leave in soon and she works like a pro in her 9th month of pregnancy! Truly amazing.” The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families. GFWC National Day Of Service Since its establishment in 1890, The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) is united in its dedication to volunteer community service. This year, they designated a National Day of Service (NDS) in which all GFWC State Federations and Women’s Clubs come together in service to highlight an area of need, take action to address it, and raise public awareness about its importance. Saturday, September 30, was selected as the NDS highlighting food insecurity. As a long-standing GFWC member, and in support of the GFWC NDS, the Women’s Club of Farmingdale (WCF) recently contacted the staff of the Janice Anderson Fellowship Café at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Farmingdale to determine how best the club could address

the food insecurity needs of its community. Several club members volunteer regularly to help prepare and serve meals. It was decided that donations of gift cards to local nation-wide food chains would make it possible for recipients to plan another meal in between the once-a-month café services. The café is bright and cheery with long tables beautifully prepared with place settings. Free hot meals are offered the last Saturday of each month, with a different menu, 12-2 p.m. Birthday and holiday celebrations are celebrated each month. Besides a hot meal, they have raffles and a variety of adult seasonal like-new clean clothing and shoes (availability and sizes vary). They have an ongoing food pantry and meal programs. Pre-pandemic, the café averaged 12—125 people

During the pandemic, they set up outside the church with “Grab n Go” meals. The WCF donated 25 $10 McDonald gift cards to be given to soup kitchen recipients so that they may enjoy another meal at their convenience. Incidentally, it was noted that the Fellowship Café recently changed its name to the Janice Anderson Fellowship Café at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in memory of WCF member Helen Bergman’s daughter, Janice Anderson. The Women’s Club of Farmingdale, a local philanthropic organization, is always interested in welcoming new members. FSD Superintendent Paul Deﬁndini Updates Community On The Band Camp Bus Crash

On October 10, 2023, the MassapequaFarmingdale Men’s Club welcomed speaker Superintendent Defendini to answer community questions regarding the recent band camp bus crash. Superintendent Defindini opened with, “OUR STUDENTS ARE RESILIENT,” as he addressed members of the MassapequaFarmingdale Men’s Club and guest members from the Women’s Club of Farmingdale. Superintendent Defindini updated the members and guests regarding students and staff weeks after the horrific bus crash taking the lives of the High School’s much-loved marching band director, Gina Pelletieri (Ms. P) and the “Grandma” of the marching band, Bea Ferrari (Grandma B). He stated that students will need physical and emotional healing for the trauma they’ve been through. “A 14-yr. old

The 68th Annual Show will be held in the Pottery Shed at Starkie Bros Garden Center, 721 Main Street, Farmingdale. These are Not your mother’s chrysanthemums! These mums cannot be bought 3 for $20.00 at the local supermarket. The majority of mums in competition will be giants, minimum size of the bloom to get into the competition is 4”, some up to 11” across. Many people remember them as ‘Football’ Mums. Amateur growers are encouraged to participate (you do not have be a member of the society to compete), simply bring your blooms (both Football and Garden Hardy) to the Pottery Shed, between 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm, Friday, October 27. The members of the Long Island Chrysanthemum Society will help you get your blooms labeled and on the show tables. Please know the name of the variety that you will be entering. New for 2023, the National Chrysanthemum Society, Inc. USA, the governing body of chrysanthemum shows in America, is providing $100 in prize money for the best Novice and best Youth entries that receive a Blue Ribbon or higher award. This prize will be sent as a check from the National Chrysanthemum Society. These cash prizes are a result of a grant from

the James Bowersox Trust which was established to preserve and promote chrysanthemum culture in the United States. Awards will be given based on the NCS rules of competition as awarded by the judges. Alzheimer’s Foundation Of America Hosting Training To Help Improve Services For Veterans Living With Cognitive Conditions

To help enhance services for veterans, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is hosting a free educational workshop for those who serve and care for veterans, especially those living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), and dementia. The workshop, “An Exploration of Brain Health and Trauma,” which includes training from AFA and the New York City Department of Veterans’ Services, will take place on Thursday, November 2, from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm, at The Watermark at Brooklyn Heights (21 Clark Street, Brooklyn).

Individuals can register through AFA’s website. TBIs, which can be sustained in both combat and non-combat military service, PTSD, or being a prisoner of war can all increase a veteran’s chances of developing dementia, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Veterans living with dementia can experience a re-emergence of traumatic memories as the brain deteriorates, along with their coping skills and the ability to suppress traumatic memories. According to the NYC Department of Veterans’ Services, there are more than 150,000 veterans living

in NYC. “Every veteran makes sacrifices and puts themselves in harm’s way in service to our country. During the course of their service, veterans may experience chronic stress, TBIs, or PTSD, especially if they served in combat. All of that impacts their mental health and increases their risk of developing dementia,” said Jennifer Reeder, LCSW, SIFI, AFA’s Director of Educational and Social Services. “Understanding the impact of chronic stress and trauma on brain health, especially for veterans with dementia, and knowing how to help veterans when traumatic

memories cause them distress is essential for those who serve veterans, so that they can provide the level of support our veterans need and very much deserve.” The training workshop will detail the impact of chronic stress, TBIs, and PTSD on brain health, the relationship between these factors and dementia, and vital information on resources, services and non-pharmacological approaches available to help. Speakers will include Jennifer Reeder, LCSW, SIFI, AFA’s Director of Educational and Social Services, and Lauren D’Mello, Ed.D., MHC, Executive Director of the New

York City Department of Veterans’ Services’ Mental Health and Care Coordination Unit. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions of the speakers. Licensed social workers and certified case managers who attend may be able to receive 3 continuing education credits. The AFA training workshop is being sponsored by Care Patrol and VNS Health.
