group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels of figure skating and hockey. Skaters are grouped based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels. The program is 7 weeks in length (although there will be no classes on November 28th and 29th) and all classes are 30 minutes in length. For residents, the fee is $135 for the session. For non-residents the fee is $175. The “Learn to Skate” schedule is: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tuesdays & Thursdays 10:00 a.m. to Noon, Saturdays from 10:50 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. and Sundays from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Registration costs include admission into the session for which you are registered on the day of the lesson, membership in the United States Figure Skating (USFS) Basic Skills Program, USFS record book for NEW members, and stickers and USFS Badges upon mastering of each level. There will also be an evaluation on week 7 with a recommendation for next series. There will be no refunds or makeups and skate rental is not included in price. Helmets, gloves or mittens and warm layers are recommended for all skaters. “The Rinx Skating School philosophy is simple; their staff of experienced and qualified professionals, governed by

Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, hosted its Walk, Run & Ride for Autism on September 29th at the Holtsville Ecology Center. DDI raised over $47,000 to help fund the vital programs and services DDI provides to over 5,000 families served by their educational and residential programs, adult day training and medical services. “This event is all about coming together as a community and helping those who cannot help themselves,” said CoChairman of the event Brian Brunjes. “This year we not only met our financial goal, but we exceeded it. It is inspiring to see the generosity of a community come together and lend themselves to help benefit thousands of families who need services for their loved ones.” Hundreds of Long Islanders came out for the fun filled day. The day kicked off with the Matthew Stansky Memorial Run followed by a scenic 5K Walk through Suffolk County’s Holtsville Ecology Park that featured activities for the entire family along the way. For the second year in a row, the event included a Motorcycle and classic car run sponsored by Hansen Home Designs. The day was capped off with a festival in the park complete with picnic lunch, music, games, a petting zoo and more. This years event Grand Marshals are six recent St. John’s University graduates who spent one week walking 128-miles in the blistering heat this past May from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Montauk Lighthouse in order to benefit DDI. The Guilds were among more than 45 charitable organizations selling $5 discount cards for the August 24th charity shopping event, Macy’s Shop For A Cause, at the Westfield South Shore Mall. The Child Life Program, which began in 2003, focuses on making a child’s health care experience more comfortable using tools familiar to them, such as art, play and education. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto invites residents and their families to the Town of Oyster Bay’s 5th Annual Family Fall & Halloween Festival. On Saturday, October 26th, the Town will host the second fall family festival from 1 to 4 p.m. at Marjorie R. Post Park, at the corner of Unqua and Merrick Roads, in Massapequa. As in years past, this fun-filled event takes place on both the Town’s North and South shores. The first festival was held earlier this month at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, in Jericho. “I invite residents to

come out and celebrate the arrival of the fall season at this annual free event, which features fun activities for children and adults alike, including Halloween crafts, a hayride, as well as bouncies, games, apple cider and popcorn,” Supervisor Venditto said. “There will also be a ‘U-Pick’ pumpkin patch for children to explore and have the unique experience of picking out their own pumpkin, which they will then be given the opportunity to decorate. In addition, children are welcome and encouraged to come in costumes.” The Supervisor noted that this event is being held

Mall Walking Program Residents can stay active this fall by signing up for the Town of Oyster Bay’s free Mall Walking Program. According to Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson, registration is underway for the twiceweekly program that gives anyone, regardless of age, the opportunity to exercise at area malls. “Many of us exercise regularly in the summer, but not as much when the weather starts getting colder,” Councilwoman Johnson explained. “Walking is a wonderful form of exercise, something that can be implemented as a lifelong activity in an effort to stay active. The Town instituted this program to allow people to work out, regardless of the weather outside, and to learn some valuable tips on how to get the most benefits out of walking.” The popular program, which runs from Monday,

November 4th to Thursday, December 5th (excluding holidays), is offered at two locations, Broadway Mall in Hicksville and Westfield Sunrise Mall in Massapequa. The Hicksville Mall program will start on Monday, November 4th and runs on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., and the Massapequa Mall program will start on Thursday, November 7th and runs Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Hicksville walkers will meet in front of the escalator near the Ikea entrance, and Massapequa walkers will meet inside on the main level in front of J.C. Penney. “The Town’s Co-Ed Walking Mall Program is the perfect way to start a new chapter of physical fitness in one’s life, resulting in a more fit and active lifestyle,” Councilwoman Johnson

said. “Mall walking is an excellent choice for anyone who has been thinking about beginning a new exercise routine.
