astplain Elementary School in the Plainedge School District celebrated its 60th anniversary with a ceremony on October 10th. Donning the district’s color of red, Principal Emily O’Brien and the entire student body gathered to open a time capsule that was buried at the school 25 years ago. Also part of the ceremony was a slideshow of photos from the school throughout the years and speeches from honored guests.

Harry Stands Alone By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Unfortunately, following last week’s printing, Harvey the Goldfish succumbed to… well, whatever it is carnival goldfish often succumb to, only five days after his “adoption” into my home. He didn’t live to see his name in print, but I’m sure he would appreciate all the condolences received upon his untimely passing. Harry, his fishbowl buddy and hide-and-seek companion, seems to be holding up quite well. Perhaps he had something to do with Harvey’s demise.
Maybe he prefers the solitude. After all, that tree is really only big enough for one average-sized goldfish to hide behind at a time. I contemplated buying Harry a new friend, but I’m a bit hesitant. Rarely has a fish seemed so lively, so content, so vivacious – darting to and fro, bouncing off the sides of the bowl. I half expect to find him lying on the counter one morning, fins up, as a result of diving headfirst over the edge. I suppose I must look gigantic to him, magnified through the bowl, looming
over his tropical sanctuary. And yet there are times when I’m standing at the counter, preparing dinner, and he will come and press his face against the glass, eagerly watching my every move as if to say, What are you making? Is it for me? Can I have some? Please?? And so, once again, as of this writing, Harry is living happily – whatever “happy” is for a goldfish. I’ll leave him on his own for a while, King of the Bowl, and see how it goes. In the meantime, I’ll bring home a copy of my column for him to read.

OUTDOOR ETHICS - Pack 776 Scouts ventured out to Nassau County Council’s own camp, Shiff Scout Reservation, on September 20th, to learn about outdoor ethics and complete a service project for the camp. The Scouts were welcomed with an educational presentation on respecting nature and the outdoors. Then they hiked through the beautiful camp and ended up at a campsite with a fire ring in need of repair. The boys, with the help of their adults, rehabilitated a fire ring. “Both Nancy and Susan’s dedication to children has been demonstrated in their work as volunteers for CAPS and as leaders on the CAPS Board of Directors,” said Alane Fagin, Executive Director. “We applaud their efforts to prevent child abuse and bullying
through their work with CAPS and working to fulfill the organization’s mission of keeping every child safe from harm.” In their work, they have collectively presented prevention through education programs to more than 30,000 children in more than 1,200 classrooms
across Long Island. “The proceeds from the golf outing will help underwrite the presentation of CAPS’ prevention through education programs to school-age children,” said Alane Fagin. “We’re grateful to all those who took part in our Outing to support our efforts to
keep our children safe from abuse and bullying.” Founded in 1982, the Roslyn-based Child Abuse Prevention Services is Long Island’s comprehensive resource center for the prevention of child abuse, bullying and peer harassment. It is a non-profit organization underwritten by private
