How to Safely Trick-or-Treat this Halloween Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued new guidelines on how to celebrate Halloween safely. The agency grouped Halloween activities into low, moderate and high-risk buckets with traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating making the top of the higher-risk activities for spreading COVID-19. The guidelines come one week after Governor Andrew Cuomo said he wouldn’t formally ban trick-or-treating this year, but said he won’t necessarily encourage parents to take kids doorto-door either. For those who do plan to head out this October, Sharon Nachman, MD,

Chief of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital has some tips for families on how to safely trick-or-treat on Halloween during the pandemic. 1. Staying 6 feet away while walking and going from home to home. 2. Go trick-or-treating in small groups. 3. Parents and kids should always wear their masks while walking in the neighborhood, as well as when you open the door to hand out candy. 4. Not allowing (older) kids to go out unsupervised. 5. Consider organizing your route. Talk to friends and neighbors and have a

preset signal. For example, outside lights means kids know this is a home you can stop at for trick-ortreating. 6. Only wrapped candies or treats. 7. Some families may

elect to leave a few treats on their outside stoop of their home. If that is the case, then remind kids to only take one! 8. No parties! 9. You can leave a bucket or wear a mask and use hand sanitizer when handing out treats. No crowding at the door is important. 10. Pre-organize the route. “Parents can work to make trick-or-treating safe. It will take some extra preparation and thinking,” said Dr. Nachman. “Kids can have a good time. It will just look different from past years but that’s fine.”

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently announced a partnership with NuHealth (Nassau University Medical Center) to provide free flu shots to residents aged 60+. The Town of Oyster Bay’s Free Flu Vaccination Program will

take place on Monday, November 2nd at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. The program will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and vaccinations will be administered on a first-come, first served basis. Supervisor Saladino

stated, “Thanks to a partnership with NuHealth, the influenza inoculations are being made available to senior citizens with no out-ofpocket expense. Health professionals recommend getting a seasonal influenza vaccination annually, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic,

it is more important than ever this year! By getting a vaccination, you can protect yourself, reduce the spread of respiratory illness to others and help limit the strain on our healthcare workers are they continue to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.” Dr. Anthony Boutin,

This could mean staggering times to go on the search for candy and avoiding homes where trick-or-treaters have already lined up. • Consider small gatherings that enable youngsters to exchange candy with a limited group of friends or neighbors. • Head to the mall or nearby stores in costume and get candy from retailers where it may be easier to maintain distance. • Wear your mask or special face coverings when trick-or-treating. Consider building a costume around the masks so it fits with the Halloween theme. • Wash hands frequently or use hand sanitizer when water and soap is unavailable. Limit the number of houses you visit to reduce your risk of infection. • Ask family or friends to send digital treats, such as gift cards or certificates. Many restaurants may offer voucher programs for coupons for free ice creams at their locations, and while these may not be traditional Halloween goodies, ice cream is still sure to please youngsters. • Consider car parades instead of traditional trickor-treating. Third Graders At Saltzman East Memorial Receive “Recess Backpacks” With schools opening once again with many new procedures, Madeline Gross, a student at Our Lady of Mercy High School, and the daughter of a Farmingdale School District 3rd grade teacher, initiated a communityminded project to help her mother’s class at Saltzman East Memorial enjoy their recess time while keeping socially distant and safe. Madeline brought her idea to her grandmother, Ann Lomonte, a member of the Women’s Club of Farmingdale (WCF). In no time at all, club members filled mesh backpacks with

chalk, yo-yo’s, bubbles, and single use jump ropes, to name just a few items, that can be used individually by the students. In all, 82 backpacks were donated, enough for each 3rd grade student. Hats off to “Maddie” for seeing a community need and finding a way to make it happen. It’s obviously a family trait as Maddie’s grandmother, Ann Lomonte, volunteered to help WCF President, Tina Diamond, participate in a GFWC (General Federation of Women’s Clubs) International Project….collecting

empty pill bottles, with labels removed, to donate to medical facilities in disadvantaged areas worldwide. So far, over 270 pill bottles have been collected. Just before the start of school, the WCF Welfare Committee, chaired by Rosemary Emigholz, usually collects memberdonated backpacks filled with school supplies to be provided to St. Kilian’s Outreach. For Covid-19 reasons, this year Outreach asked for gift cards to Target and Walmart. Over $500 in gift cards was donated and will be used by FHS qualifying students for

New York State. Originally built in Glenwood Landing in 1883, The Christeen is an amazing and historical vessel that has served a number of roles over the years, from oyster sloop to cargo carrier. Its story of survival is an incredible one, and I am proud to dedicate this historical marker today to bring more attention to this incredible vessel.” Originally built in 1883 in Glenwood Landing for harvesting oysters in Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor, over her 125 years the Christeen survived 16 major hurricanes, numerous nor’easters, two sinkings, and severe neglect to be fully restored by master shipwrights from the Christeen Oyster Sloop Restoration Foundation. Upon her completion and relaunch in 1999, the Christeen was gifted to the Waterfront Center where she now serves as a floating classroom educating passengers about maritime history, marine science, coastal ecology, the oyster industry, and aquaculture.

Pumpkin seeds can even be ground with fresh garlic, parsley and cilantro leaves and then mixed with olive oil and lemon juice to create a delicious salad dressing. Chopped pumpkin seeds also can be added to cereals. This Halloween, don’t forget to add a little nutrition to celebrations by roasting some pumpkin seeds.

Rescheduled 10th Annual All Kids Fair Has Gone Virtual! The 10th annual All Kids Fair, which was postponed from its usual month of April to November 8 has now gone virtual! An expo which draws thousands could not take place due to COVID-19, but rest assured a great time can still be had by all members of the family online. This year’s All Kids Fair, which will take place from 11 AM – 4 PM, will have a great line-up of virtual classes for the kids of all ages with some for the adults, too. Some of the many kids’ classes will be: Incredibles Entertainment, Science Party, Captain America Entertainment, Intro to Chess, and an Adventure Style Class. For the adults, there will be classes on essential oils, avoiding sugar in your children’s diet, and financial planning. Since families always enjoy our petting zoo, this year there will be several virtual “live animal visits,” where farm animals such as sheep, goats and a mini-donkey will be the stars. In addition to being educational, the “visits” will be highly entertaining. Another new addition to this year’s event are “coffee talks,” opportunities for parents to interact with others at the same stage of life, such as those with a child who is an infant, toddler, elementary age, middle school age, special needs, and gifted. All Kids Fair Director Barbara Kaplan said the time is right to pivot to an All Kids Fair virtual expo. “It’s definitely not “just a
