Curran Also Announces Veteran Picnic to Engage Younger Vets proud to soon be able to offer the specialized help that they need to get them through tough times,” said County Executive Curran. “Veterans experience unique behavioral and mental health issues and often need unique support to conquer them. With the new crisis counselor service, we will be able to provide the help our Vets need. County Executive Curran has once again fought to do the right thing for Nassau’s Vets and we thank her for her ongoing support,” said Ralph Esposito, Director of Nassau County Veterans Service Agency. The service will be free for all Veterans but will target Afghanistan and Iraq Veterans, who are 2.5x more likely to die by suicide. The crisis counselors will be licensed social workers specializing in veterans / military distress and will offer in person crisis intervention services, care coordination support and linkage to peer support services. These crisis counselors

will be trained to support veterans combatting mental illnesses, suicidal thoughts, substance use disorder and emotional distress. The program is being developed by the Mental Health Association of Nassau County and will be supported by American Rescue Plan (ARP) funding. Curran also announced a Veterans picnic, open to Veterans and their families, on October 23 from 11am to 2pm at Eisenhower Park. The event will have free food and entertainment as well as an array of support services available to Veterans in Nassau County. County Executive Curran also reminded the public of existing VSA programs, such as the Vet2Vet program. Vet2Vet is a nationally modeled program that aims to reduce Veteran Suicide and substance abuse through peer support. For information on any of the support services the VSA offers call: 516-5726565

In ongoing support of Suicide Prevention Month, and as military and Veterans suicides continue to rise at an alarming rate (25% in 2020), County Executive Curran was joined with local Veterans and the Veterans Services Agency (VSA) to announce a new support system for Nassau’s Veterans. Nassau’s VSA will soon be equipped with in-house social workers, specializing in assisting veterans with crisis counseling, substance abuse and other mental health related issues. The County aims to have the services available six days a week (Monday through Saturday) at no cost to local veterans. “Our Veterans Service Agency does a fantastic job supporting the brave men and women who have served our country and the acquisition of specialized crisis counselors will only expand on what they offer to our Veterans. Long Island Coalition for the Homeless www.addessthehomeless.org Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was founded in 1985. Their mission is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

Located in the Amityville Community Resource Center, this Boutique is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10AM-3PM by appointment only (at this time, shelter staff/case managers must schedule an appointment to pick up their clients’ items). Upon entering the boutique, you can expect to ﬁnd clothing, nonperishable food, new bedding and pillows, personal care and feminine care items, toiletries and much more! The clothing options can range from casual to business attire and there is clothing available in all sizes; infant through adult. They are currently looking for volunteers who are organized, fun and dedicated to sort and display items at the Boutique. Even giving just a few hours of your time can be a huge help. Additionally, they are in need of various donations. The most needed items are baby diapers, formula and wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine products, plus-size clothing, school supplies (especially binders, dividers and spiral notebooks), along with non-perishable food items. They are also looking for new and gently used housewares.

The Community Garden program also incorporates the preparation of healthy meals made from organic ingredients. Members also learn to cook and enjoy various new dishes. The garden planning and planting happens from JanuaryNovember, so now is a great time to learn and get involved before you can get busy planning and planting! LICH runs a local Boutique that gives people in need a chance to come and pick out clothes and other essential items, all for free. With the help of generous people, they collect items year-round for people experiencing homelessness.

Garden Club. Their Garden Club holds meetings, where members decide what to plant and grow, while learning about various aspects of organic gardening. Anyone who is interested in gardening is welcomed by this Garden Club to volunteer with them. Volunteers can attend to the basic gardening by helping to weed, till, harvest and more, build vertical and raised beds and more.

PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island initiative has exceeded its goal, raising the equivalent of 21,944 meals – nearly a thousand more meals than its 21,000-meal objective. Three months and six food drives yielded 10,106 pounds of food and supplies, plus nearly $2,200 in cash donations, and online donations totaling more than $4,000. Representatives from Island Harvest Food Bank, small business owners, community volunteers and Girl Scouts who contributed to the initiative, the company announced the results of its Power to Feed Long Island initiative at the food bank’s Melville warehouse. “We are proud that our community came out to support each other and fight hunger through our Power to Feed Long Island food drives,” said Daniel Eichhorn, president and COO of PSEG Long Island, and Island Harvest Food Bank board member. “We set a lofty goal in July, and Long Islanders showed up in force with shopping carts and trunks full of food and supplies to meet the challenge. We crushed our goal because helping each other is something Long Islanders do, and it’s something our employees do. We’re glad we were able

to create the venue to make it happen.” “We are incredibly grateful to PSEG Long Island for their longstanding commitment to addressing the issue of hunger and food insecurity on Long Island,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO, Island Harvest Food Bank. “Thanks to their concern and generosity and the success of the Power to Feed Long Island initiative, countless Long Islanders struggling to feed their families will be able to rest easier knowing that they will have access to something as basic as food.” Power to Feed Long Island was created to restock the shelves at Island Harvest to enable the nonprofit to provide community members in need with nutritious food, personal care items, baby essentials and pet supplies. Food drive events were held at six supermarkets ─ King Kullen in Garden City Park/New Hyde Park and Shirley; Stew Leonard’s in East Meadow; and Stop & Shop in Huntington Station, Islandia and Massapequa ─ from July through September, when vacations cause a decrease in donations, and collection drives are not top of mind. It is also a time when children out of school are not receiving daily free or

reduced-cost breakfast and lunch, which puts a heavier burden on their families. “Stop & Shop is proud to continue its committed support of the efforts of Island Harvest to address food insecurity across Nassau and Suffolk counties,” said Stefanie Shuman, community relations manager, Stop & Shop. “Power to Feed Long Island allowed our customers to take part in food drives held at Stop & Shop stores and help their neighbors in need. It’s important that we all come together during these very difficult times,” she added. Along with the economic hardships caused by the pandemic, there is a significant strain on the supplemental food supply chain. The collection drives continued through September, Hunger Action Month. More than a dozen PSEG Long Island employees participated in the food drives as Power to Feed Long Island ambassadors. TOWN’S ZOMBIE HOME REGISTRY NOW LIVE - Town Councilman Lou Imbroto recently announced the launch of a new online initiative that allows residents to report abandoned/zombie properties within their neighborhood located in the unincorporated areas of the Town of Oyster Bay. Town Councilman Lou Imbroto recently announced the launch of a new online initiative that allows residents to report abandoned/zombie properties within their neighborhood located in the unincorporated areas of the Town of Oyster Bay. This new Abandoned Property/Zombie Home Registry assists the Town of Oyster Bay in combatting eyesores in local communities. “Protecting our suburban quality of life is a top priority for the Town Board,” said Councilman Imbroto, who serves as Chairman of the Town’s Quality of Life Taskforce. “No community should be forced to deal with unmaintained and dangerous eyesores that serve as havens for squatters, rodents and other such problems. The Abandoned Property/ Zombie Home Registry will help us continue to make headway with cleaning

up these eyesores, and we encourage residents to serve as our eyes and ears by using this reporting system to help.” Zombie homes are properties that have been vacant for an extended period of time and are often owned by a bank, trust, or mortgage company. Code Enforcement Bureau from the Department of Planning of Development continually monitor vacant properties, issue Notices of Violation against neglected properties, and take action to cleanup properties. With help from the public, the Town can better identify every existing eyesore within communities. Once a property has been identified as abandoned or an eyesore, Code Enforcement Officers inspect the property to assess the property. The Town explores all possible avenues to spur the owner to rehabilitate the property. Once all options have been exhausted, the Town will

seek legal remedies to demolish eyesore in the community. “The objective of the Town’s Zombie Home Program is to ensure the Town of Oyster Bay continues to be a highly desirable community to live, work and raise a family,” added Supervisor Saladino said. “This new, online registry will help our Department of Planning and Development enhance their tracking of eyesores. Ultimately, if the property owner cannot keep it maintained, the goal of this initiative is to make way for new families and new homes after tearing down these zombie homes.” The Town’s Abandoned Property/Zombie Home Registry was established under a grant provided through the New York State Housing Stabilization Fund. Metrix E-Learning System,

the free online job skills training service, is offered through The Workforce Partnership - a consortium of local governments committed to providing free and valuable information and services to both employers and jobseekers. Supervisor Saladino stated, “Many people have experienced unimaginable and unprecedented hardship throughout this

pandemic, and as a result, many businesses have closed and individuals have lost work because of it. As we continue turning the corner in the fight against COVID-19, residents are looking to return to work and we’re proud to offer the Metrix E-Learning System to those who seek to ‘skillup’ and re-enter the workforce more capable than when they left it.

Of course, services are available for those looking for new employment opportunities as well, including recent college graduates and persons looking to change career paths.” The Metrix E-Learning System offers a wide variety of courses to help people who are looking for employment. Currently, there are over 5,500 courses available,

Lindner Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities, a dedicated facility that offers families comprehensive assessments, family support and updated information on autism research while also building awareness.
