There are those who contend that things were far simpler before technology invaded our daily lives and made us dependent upon electronic devices glued to our hands. In some respects, yes, absolutely. But the benefits are not to be so lightly dismissed. Case in point: the recent avalanche of new smartphones which have been released. What’s the difference between one model and the next? Is it worth the money invested? In reality, not much, and no. But as a society, we have been conditioned to want the next big thing, at whatever the cost. It’s become more of a status symbol than a matter of functionality.

For me, the selling point of a smartphone, initially, was to have the ability to text using a full keyboard, rather than one button at a time, letter by tedious letter. I was extremely late to the party, in that respect, having held on to my cherished ﬂip phone for far longer than most in my age bracket. But once I upgraded, there was no going back. Fast forward several years, and my motivation isn’t the slightly larger screen, the slightly longer battery life or a new collection of apps and emojis – it is, quite simply, the camera. My love of photography, while always a passion, has never been complemented by an equally-adequate camera. After reading the reviews of the latest iPhone, it seemed to be a no-brainer to invest

the money into a two-forone deal – a state-of-the-art phone coupled with a camera that earned the praises of numerous professional photographers. And so I took the plunge. And it was worth it. All the downfalls the previous camera had been plagued with, eliminated. Low light, zoom, clarity… now vastly improved upon. It may not seem like much to those who yearn for the simplicity of the days of the rotary phone; but, for me, it is everything. And so I embark on my next photographic pursuit, new phone/camera in hand, embracing the technology which surrounds us. Sometimes, the function does outweigh the downfall after all.

The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund is holding its 4th annual Bowling Fundraiser at Farmindale Lanes in Farmingdale on October 22nd. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund is a non-profit organization established to honor the memory of Brittney Walsh. On June 24th, 2012, just two days after Brittney’s high school graduation, she was killed by a drunk driver. This tragic incident has left her family and friends in a great deal of pain. Long Islanders as a whole who have viewed the facts of this horrible event on television and through the newspapers have expressed their grief, shock and sympathy. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund has been designed to assist children just like Brittney - young people who excel in academics, push

themselves to give 100% in sports and are active in school clubs. The goal is to provide three high school seniors each year with scholorships to help make their futures a little brighter. In the 18 years of her life, Brittney touched the hearts of so many people with her love, smile and generosity. With your help, she can continue to do so. Classic Car Show Farmingdale High School recently hosted its annual historical car show to share automotive history and artistry with students and members of the Farmingdale community. Throughout the day, dozens of students stopped by to admire old cars from the 1920’s through the present day and ask the cars’ owners questions about particular makes and models. Some of the cars

on display were restored by Farmingdale High School students, and studentmade trophies were given to the Best Car, the Best Car Paint, and the Best in Show The annual car show is a unique program offered by the Farmingdale School District to give Farmingdale students the opportunity to look beneath the hood on dozens of cars to learn how each model worked

and evolved. Farmingdale High School professors also spoke with visitors and answered questions about common artistic themes in early automotive history as well as the mechanical evolution of the internal combustion engine. All proceeds benefited the St. Kilian Parish Social Ministry Outreach Office to assist families in the Farmingdale community with food, basic needs and school supplies.

Farmingdale Field of Honor The Kiwanis Club of Farmingdale, the official Kiwanis Club for the Farmingdale area, along with the Farmingdale High School Key Club, the Farmingdale Boy Scouts and the VFW, will erect a “Field of Honor” on Saturday November 5th, at 1 p.m. 150 American ﬂags will remain on display on the lawn at the Farmingdale Public Library, 116 Merritts Road, through December 10th. The public is invited to attend the ceremony. The presentation of ﬂags, known as the Field of Honor, is a symbol of those who sacrificed their lives for our country, those who served and are

BACCA Award Winners The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts, BACCA is proud to announce this year’s Photography & Sculpture Show winners. The many entries on exhibition were outstanding. The winners were presented with their ribbons at a reception on Thursday evening, September 29th, at Old Town Hall in Babylon Village. The reception was well attended and enjoyed by all of the photographers, sculptors and their friends and family. Members from the community came to enjoy the festivities as well. The sculpture judge was Eileen Barry. Ms. Barry is a noted American sculptor who works in her studio in East Islip. Her numerous commissioned monuments can be seen installed in many public locations. Her works include, “The Rensselaer Monument Bronze Sculpture” and “Courage, Compassion, Pain “The

Viet Nam Experience,” amongst many others. Numerous collectors in the U.S. and Europe are proud to exhibit her work. The judge for the photography portion of the show was Holly Gordon. Ms. Gordon has established her reputation as both a fine art and documentary photographer creating break-through work in creative fine art photography where she has captured the environmentally important essence of the Galapagos Islands, Antarctica and China. As an art teacher with some 30 years of experience, her photo essays have gained visibility in museums, galleries, schools and libraries.
