Bethpage High School senior Eirini Drosos was recently named a semifinalist in the 65th annual National Merit Scholarship program. Eirini is one of 16,000 semifinalists who have been chosen to compete for a finalist spot. From there, 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million will be awarded. Students around

the nation qualified by taking last year’s PSAT/ NMSQT test. An active member of the high school community, Eirini is a member of the pep band, swim team, ethics team and the philosophy club. Additionally, she is the treasurer of the senior class. Outside of school she volunteers at a local animal shelter. In addition to Eirini

National Merit Scholarship Honorees being named a semifinalist, five students were named Commended Students in the program. The district congratulates Rahul Busri, Michael D’Avanzo, Doreen Dong, Matthew Fantry and Jessica Kneller for their recognitions. National Merit finalists will be named later this year, and winners of scholarships will comprise about half of the finalists.

Farmingdale High School Principal Dr. Samuel Thompson announced that seniors Nathaniel Trees, Zachary Suwalski, and Lily Coffin have been named Commended Students in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. Dr. Thompson presented Nathaniel and Zachary with official Letters of Commendation (Lily was

unable to attend) along with Director of Guidance Maureen Moloughney and guidance counselor Barbara Besser Reyes. These students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2020 competition by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/

The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. Every bit of money raised through their annual e v e n t (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The event will run on October 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. You can become involved with the Cemetery of Lost Souls in many ways. They are actively looking for volunteers in the following areas: Digital Marketing (to help with social media marketing), Scare Team Members (actors to help put on the event), Security (watching over the event and making sure all guests are safe), and Bake Team Members (to donate baked

goods to sell at some of the events). Volunteers must be 16 years of age and volunteer time can count towards community service hours! Town Unveils New Dog-Friendly Neighborhood Parks Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola today unveiled a dozen neighborhood parks in communities throughout the Town where residents are now permitted to bring leashed pets. This new initiative builds on recent efforts to enhance dog-lover’s access to Town facilities, including upgrades to the Town’s existing Dog Park on the south shore and a commitment for a new north shore facility, for which construction is underway. “Our pets are like family, and residents have been requesting that we give consideration to allowing them to enjoy our facilities with their dogs,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We are pleased to be able to unveil these new dog-friendly locations for our residents and their furry friends!” “As a dog lover and

owner of two, I understand how enjoyable it is to bring our pets on outings where they can enjoy the nice weather and get some exercise,” said Councilman Labriola. “I’ve spoken with many residents who have expressed their desires to walk their dogs at local neighborhood parks, and I immediately began working with the Parks Department to make that dream a reality.” The Town Board recently voted to allow pets at neighborhood parks designated by the Town Parks Commissioner. Consideration was given to park utilization, location and usage. New signage has been placed at the designated parks advising residents that leashed pets are welcome. Dogs are only permitted at those locations specified by the Parks Commissioner, with the exception of serve animals. Current parks selected are: • H-16, Hunter Lane
