HOMECOMING CELEBRATION - The Plainedge High School Varsity Football Red Devils scored a decisive 35-7 victory against Hewlett, bringing a perfect end to the school’s homecoming celebration on September 28th. Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Rebecca M. Alesia invites residents to attend the annual Paws 2 Love Pet Adoption Festival & Benefit, being hosted by the Manetto Hill Animal Hospital & Paw Seasons Hotel & Day Spa. The event will be held on Sunday, October 27th, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the facility, located at 122 Manetto Hill Road in Plainview. “This not-for-profit event will bring together local rescue groups and shelters in an effort to help bring awareness of pets in need of forever homes, while providing a fun-filled and informative day to our community,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “Admission is free and leashed pets are welcomed to the event.” The Councilwoman added that there will be vendors on hand providing pet-related products, and

Commuting. Whether by train, plane or automobile, it has the potential to be tedious, inconvenient and highly frustrating. For many years, I was fortunate to have a very short drive to work, bypassing Long Island’s fine highways and parkways – and all the joys they bring. (Yes, that was sarcasm.) This last year has more than made up for it. Case in point: Just the other morning, I was cruising on the Southern State when I passed one of those helpful overhead signs alerting you to any traffic

delays you might encounter up ahead. “Traffic Moving Well” it said. Wonderful. A few exits later, dead stop. No flashing lights, no sirens, no accidents in sight. Inching along, but why? Oh but there it was, way up ahead, the unmistakable orange cone – construction. Three lanes merging into one – no warning, no signs, not a human worker in sight… just a flashing arrow instructing the cars miles up ahead to start moving over. Perfect. Of course, even in such a situation when clearly no one is going anywhere fast, don’t think the drivers’ level of courtesy increases by even

Schwarting Elementary School in the Plainedge School District recently hosted a special assembly for the entire student population. In addition to announcing the launch of a new literacy initiative, the program introduced the character education themes and focuses planned for the school year. The new literacy initiative has been developed in conjunction with the Plainedge Public Library, which is hosting an event titled “One Book…One Family…One Community.” The goal of this project is to get as

many Plainedge families to read the same book as possible – in this case, Kate DiCamillo’s novel “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane,” about a rabbit who embarks on a journey and learns many valuable lessons along the way. Families are given four weeks to complete the project, and the library will hold a pajama party celebration at the end of November for those who participate. Teachers and staff at Schwarting dressed as bunnies for the assembly, during which the project was described to students in detail. The second portion of

The Farmingdale School District recently announced nominations for the Farmingdale High School’s 2014 Wall of Fame Induction Class are now being accepted. The Wall of Fame is located in the main lobby of Farmingdale High School as it features plaques of all honorees. “Every year we are fortunate to receive hundreds of entrees on behalf of deserving alumni who have had a significant impact in our community,” said Farmingdale High School Assistant Principal Cheryl DePierro. “It is rewarding to see the community’s active participation in the Wall of Fame program and the committee looks forward to reviewing this year’s applications.” Candidates for the Wall of Fame will be reviewed under an extensive criterion. Candidates must be role models to the District’s current student body and have been successful in their academic pursuits. All candidates for the Wall of Fame must have graduated from Farmingdale High School at least 10 years ago. A nomination form may be downloaded from the Farmingdale School District’s website, www. farmingdaleschools.org, or picked up in the main offices of Farmingdale High School, Howitt Middle School, Albany Avenue Elementary School, Northside Elementary School, Saltzman East Memorial Elementary School and Woodward Parkway Elementary School. Forms may also be picked at the Farmingdale Public Library. The deadline for submission of completed applications is Monday, January 6th, 2014. The Farmingdale School District encourages community members to become involved in the issues that affect its schools.
