Hair loss is a life changing experience. Hair We Share is a non-profit organization started by Suzanne Chimera and Dean Riskin. Their goal is to make a positive difference in the lives of those suffering hair loss due to medical conditions. Hair We Share relies solely on donations, in the form of real-hair ponytails and monetary contributions. With these donations, they provide quality hair solutions at no cost to many men, women and children throughout the USA, however they are located right here on Long Island! Hair We Share is committed to changing lives.

This organization was formed in 2014 when a woman wanted a wig for her daughter who has Alopecia. She reached out to Manny Roberts Hair Replacement, a wig business owned by Dean Riskin and mentioned that her daughter saw one of their wigs on a TV show, worn by someone else who has Alopecia. She immediately felt a sense of relief, realizing she is not the only person who has this condition. Her mother wanted to do anything she could to get her daughter a wig just like this, hence why she reached out to the business who created it.

Hair We Share provides customized wigs made from real hair, free of charge to anyone whose financial means doesn’t allow them to purchase one. Additionally, Hair We Share is holding a fun event, which will take place on October 16th, 17th and 18th. This event, A Walk to Remember Scavenger Hunt, will take place in Huntington and you can choose from any of the above dates to participate in it. It is an app-led outdoor scavenger hunt that will allow you to explore Huntington. Town of Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato reminds residents that due to an Executive Order from New York State, the 2020-2021 school tax deadline has been changed. To help ease the stress imposed by the COVID-19 economic pandemic, taxpayers have an additional 30-day period to make their payments in on time. Receiver Pravato stated, “The 20202021 school tax collection has been delayed by one month. This year’s collection will start November 1st and the final day to pay the first half school tax without penalty will be December

10th.” The Receiver continued, “Residents can expect to receive their tax bill in the mail during the first week in November, after my office receives the assessment roll and warrant from Nassau County. We will not have the tax amounts due and cannot accept payments until November 1st. During this public health crisis, the Receiver’s office has been fully operational but has suspended in-office interactions. New outdoor walk up windows are open at Town Hall North and Town Hall South daily from 9:00

am to 4:45 pm to assist residents. Residents do not need to visit the Tax Office to make tax payments or get information. Payments can be sent through the mail or paid online at oysterbaytown.com for a reduced fee of 75 cents for an ACH check through a checking account, or with a credit card for a much higher fee charged by the credit card companies. Residents with any questions may contact the Tax Receiver’s Office at (516) 624-6400 or by emailing receiveroftaxes@oysterbay-ny.gov.

Attendees wore face coverings for the entirety of the event. The service was also livestreamed to the town’s Facebook page for those who could not attend inperson. Supervisor Schaffer spoke about the importance of remembering not only the victims of that terrible day, but also the brave first responders who have lost their lives to illnesses linked to their work at Ground Zero as they sifted through the rubble. The names of the 48 residents killed during the attacks were read aloud, each followed by a single bell tolling.

The Risk Factors For Breast Cancer

Using Diet and Exercise to Prevent Breast Cancer

No two women are the same. But when it comes to breast cancer, women from all walks of life share various risk factors for a disease that the World Health Organization indicates is the most frequent cancer among women. Risk factors are anything that affects the likelihood that individuals will get a certain disease. In regard to breast cancer, the American Breast Cancer Foundation notes that various factors, some that result from lifestyle choices and others that are not changeable, can increase a woman’s risk of developing breast Recognizing cancer. these risk factors can help women make any necessary changes and even highlight the importance of routine cancer screenings that can detect the presence of the disease in its earliest, most treatable stages. Lifestyle-Related Risk Factors The ABCF notes that certain habits or behaviors can increase a woman’s risk for breast

cancer, but the good news is that women who understand the link between certain habits or behaviors and breast cancer can avoid those behaviors to decrease their risk of developing the disease. According to Breastcancer.org, the following are some habits, behaviors or lifestyle choices that can increase a woman’s risk for breast cancer. • Alcohol consumption: Breastcancer.org notes that researchers have uncovered links between the consumption of alcoholic beverages and hormone-receptorpositive breast cancer. One study found that women who consume three alcoholic beverages per week have a 15 percent higher risk of developing breast cancer than women who don’t drink at all. And while research into the connection is limited, a 2009 study found a link between alcohol consumption and breast cancer recurrence. lifestyle: • Sedentary Exercise consumes and controls blood sugar and limits blood levels

of insulin growth factor. That’s an important connection, as insulin growth factor can affect how breast cells grow and behave. A sedentary lifestyle also can increase a woman’s risk of being obese, which the ABCF notes is a risk factor for breast cancer among postmenopausal women. • Smoking: Smoking has long been linked to cancer, and Breastcancer. org notes that smoking has been linked to a higher risk of breast cancer in younger, premenopausal women. Unchangeable Risk Factors Unfortunately, many risk factors for breast cancer are beyond women’s control. For example, the ABCF notes that roughly two out of three invasive breast cancers occur in women age 55 and older. Women cannot change their ages, but recognizing the link between age and breast cancer risk is important, as such a recognition may compel more women 55 and older to prioritize cancer screening. Gender and family history are two additional unchangeable risk factors for breast cancer. Women are much more likely to get breast cancer than men. In addition, Breastcancer. org notes that between 5 and 10 percent of breast cancers are believed to be caused by abnormal genes that are passed from parent to child. Women are not helpless in the fight against breast cancer. Knowledge of breast cancer, including its various risk factors, is a great weapon against it as women look to reduce their risk of developing the disease.

When it comes to breast cancer risk, some things are beyond a person’s control. Women might not be able to do much in regard to their genetic makeup and family history, each of which can elevate their risk for breast cancer, but many risk factors are within women’s control. A healthy diet and routine exercise may help women reduce their risk of developing breast cancer, while poor lifestyle choices can increase that risk. For example, being overweight is a strong risk factor for breast cancer for women who are 18 and older, advises Stanford Health Care. Even 10 percent weight gain (or 15 pounds on a 150-pound woman) increases breast cancer risk as well as the risk of recurrence. Diet and exercise can play a pivotal role in reducing breast cancer risk, and it’s important for women to understand just how much good healthy diets and routine exercise can do for them in regard to fighting breast cancer. • Stanford Health Care says some studies suggest limiting dietary fats in the diet, particularly those that come from animals, to reduce breast cancer risk. These include butter, full-fat dairy, poultry skin, and fatty meats. Reducing intake of dietary fats, especially animal fats, may protect against diseases sensitive to hormones, like breast cancer. • Data from the Women’s Healthy Eating and Living study suggests that soy consumption from whole foods and soy milk for any breast cancer type is probably safe, despite

public perceptions. Avoid soy supplements and concentrated soy that comes in many soy protein powders until more about their effects is known. • The American Cancer society links alcohol consumption to a higher risk of various cancers, including breast cancer. The more alcohol a person drinks, the higher his or her cancer risk. The ACS recommends no more than one drink per day for women and two for men. A fiveounce glass of wine is considered one drink. • Susan G. Komen® says a high body mass index has been associated with increased risk for postmenopausal breast cancer. Exercise may help reduce risk by altering metabolism, hormones and breast density. • Inflammation is an immune system response to injury or illness. However, when inflammation is chronic, it can damage DNA and lead to cancer, advises

the National Cancer Institute. Deep marine fish; dark, leafy green vegetables; bright, multicolored vegetables; black teas; and spices like turmeric can help fight or prevent inflammation. • The ACS recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderateintensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity each week (or a combination), preferably spread throughout the week to keep body weight in check. • Stanford Health Care says consumption of high amounts of sugar can increase insulin levels and result in weight gain, each of which can lead to breast cancer. Limit intake of sugary snacks and refined carbohydrates, opting for healthy alternatives such as fruit, vegetables, beans, whole grains, dairy, and soy milk. Diet and exercise is vital to overall health and can help women reduce their risk for breast cancer.

Coping With Stress During Uncertain Times

Stress can affect people’s lives at any moment. Some say that a certain measure of stress can be a good thing that pushes individuals to try their best to overcome obstacles. However, chronic stress is potentially dangerous for the mind and body. 2020 has been a stressful year for many people. A global pandemic that emerged in late 2019 and continued into the new year brought with it many changes — some of which are unprecedented. Concerns about the COVID-19 virus, unemployment, reduced wages, and uncertainty about the future has left many people feeling adrift. According to the American Psychological Association’s Stress in America survey, the average reported stress level for adults in the United States related to the coronavirus pandemic is 5.9. When asked to rate their stress level in general, the average reported stress for American adults is 5.4. This is higher than the average stress level reported in 2019, which was 4.9, and marks the first significant increase

in average reported stress since the survey began in 2007. Pandemic stress mixed with existing stress may require additional coping techniques. • Turn negative thinking into positive thinking. The occasional pep talk can help people manage their stress. Rather than saying “Everything is going wrong,” tell yourself “I can handle this, I have done it before.” Find the silver lining in situations and they may not feel so stressful. • Take things one step at a time. Getting ahead of yourself by looking too far into the future can compound stress. Focus on the here and now. Make to-do lists and take situations as they come day by day or hour by hour. Situations are often fluid, so worrying about something that is weeks away is often fruitless. • Exercise regularly. Find opportunities to exercise. The Mayo Clinic says exercise in almost any form can act as a stress reliever. Physical activity can release your feel-good endorphins and distract you from daily worries.

Exercise also can mimic the effects of stress, helping to condition the body to its effects and buffer the cardiovascular, digestive and immune systems from negative effects. • Seek out social support. Chances are someone you know also is experiencing increased stress loads. Find the time for conversation, video chats or safe, socially distanced meetups with friends. Each person can share their unique frustrations and collectively you can work through the stress. • Don’t drown in perfectionism. Trying to be mistake-free can trigger anxiety and stress. Being perfect is impossible and everyone makes mistakes. According to Psych Central, mistake-making can lead to growth and experience, while perfectionism may staunch growth because a person is too afraid to take chances. Not every decision you make will be ideal, but each is a learning experience. Stress is something most people come up against in their daily lives, perhaps more so than ever this year, but stress can be wrangled and minimized.

safety professionals within a population and per capita spending on health and emergency services (local fire and police protection). No one scored higher than Nassau. I want to thank the brave men and women of the Nassau County Police Department, all members of law enforcement, and our first responders (including Fire Service), who deserve the credit for Nassau being the safest community in America. Together we’ve made a strong commitment to community policing and building trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve, and the results are showing. As always, we will continue to put the health and safety of Nassau residents first,” said County Executive Laura Curran. The Farmingdale Public Library has re-opened while also still providing curbside services and virtual programs. Also, the Farmingdale

bowling alley re-opened. Community events in the Village are still on pause due to safety, including the Fire Department’s annual Columbus Day weekend fair. The Adult Day Care Center is a non-profit interfaith service that provides our community with a unique program for individuals 60

The organization was founded in 1995 and is a cooperative of Farmingdale United Methodist Church, St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, St. Kilian’s Roman Catholic Church and St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. Farmingdale Adult Day Care is having a fundraiser on November 21, 10 am – 3 pm at the Knights of Columbus, 1 Morton Street. They seek donations to support them in their time of need, monetary, gift cards, items for auction towards keeping this program afloat.
