Retrospect By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’ve been reﬂecting on my high school days quite a bit lately. Maybe it’s the back to school fever in the air, the specter of autumn and homecoming celebrations on the horizon… or perhaps the fact that I have seen more fellow graduates and former teachers in the last several weeks than I have, well, probably over the last five years. Not that reminiscing is anything new for me, per se, but I suppose the more you reconnect, the more vibrant the faded memories become. What were once old snapshots and slightly dogeared pages of a yearbook are brought to life once again, conjuring happy thoughts of days gone by.

Sure, life has gone on since then and taken us with it in various directions; but there is still something about those good old high school days that brings a smile to the face, mine anyway. They say some of the best friendships are forged during those formative years and that, if you hold on to even a handful of them, you should consider yourself extremely lucky. I tend to agree. As much as we have all moved on – with some pursuing college degrees and careers, others settling down to start a family, and still others on a path all their own – there is a part of me that believes, deep down, we are all simply trying to reclaim that lost innocence of youth, of days when life seemed simpler

and possibilities stretched infinitely before us. Call me crazy, but who among us wouldn’t love to have just a bit of that back? Here’s to nostalgia… here’s to the good old days… here’s to taking a look in the mirror at who we’ve become, and realizing that, for better or worse, we all still resemble that 16 yearold sitting on the bleachers at Homecoming… or passing notes in the back of a classroom… or anxiously studying for exams wondering what the future years would bring. So here we are. No shame in looking back now and then to realize how we arrived at precisely this point, and celebrating the many wonderful memories made along the way.

Student Spotlight THE LOSS OF INNOCENCE SUBMITTED BY: SILVANA LOFRIA, AGE 16, HAUPPAUGE HIGH SCHOOL

The loss of innocence is a common, reoccurring theme in high-school level English literature. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, for instance, loss of innocence is seen when Jack attempts to hunt and kill his first pig. In The Kite Runner, Hassan loses his innocence when he is raped by Assef in an alley. In the wellknown novel written by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein, the creature loses his innocence the day he was created, due to Victor abandoning him in his basement. Loss of innocence is even prevalent in movies, such as in Alice in Wonderland, when Alice cluelessly drinks from the “drink me” glass. Some can even argue that she lost her innocence before that, when

she actually tumbled down the rabbit hole. But is the theme of loss of innocence ubiquitous in only literature or cinemas? Not at all. Loss of innocence is a real live thing that people experience daily. And with technology at our fingertips, we are exposed to this recurring theme at increasingly younger ages. Television is vulgar and crude. Commercials are even shockingly inappropriate. Reality TV is showcasing and glamorizing the downfall of society. Children are being exposed to this before they even leave elementary school. Dropping the f-bomb doesn’t have the same shock value it did years ago. The idea of sex and sexual innuendos are thrown around. Children

see this, young adults see this - and it makes everything look like no big deal. No one is scared of anything anymore. No one is innocent anymore. Everyone likes to say that they are, but no one truly is. Everyone has tried things they weren’t supposed to. Everyone has incorporated profane words into their daily vocabulary. We are exposed to this on television, so it’s grown to be acceptable. To sum it up, loss of innocence is a common theme in English literature and Hollywood films. But now, with the help of constant, oneclick technology, we can all lose our innocence as young children. And we can all do it together.

Today the waters are filled with energy, Rippled by wind bouncing waves I see. No white caps, only gurgling waves bubble along, A reminder of the well known swan song. The sunset tops the peaks with shiny balls, Plentiful where the reflection of the rays now falls. Just to watch how the water reflects the sun, This in itself is relaxing fun. Presently the wind is coming from the South, Pushing the waters toward the river’s mouth. There, it will connect with the Great South Bay, Where little waves with stronger undertows play.

Neighbor Pets’ Place

Registration for the Town of Oyster Bay Youth Ice Hockey Program will take place on Sunday, October 11th (8:00 to 10:00 a.m.), Monday, October 12th (7:00 to 9:00 p.m.) and Thursday, October 15th (7:00 to 9:00 p.m.) at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center located at 1001 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage (in Bethpage Community Park). Ice hockey schedules will be distributed at registration. Youngsters from the ages three to thirteen can take advantage of The Youth Ice Hockey Program to hone their skating and hockey skills under the guidance of ice hockey coaches. The Youth Ice Hockey Program has received acclaim by the NHL, who have partnered with the Town for a ‘Hockey is For Everyone’ initiative that promotes hockey programming and youth enrichment. Anyone interested in registering for the Youth Hockey Program must bring a copy of their birth certificate, proof of Town of Oyster Bay residency

(canceled check, utility bill, etc.) and a check or money order (no cash). All registrants must bring these items, even if they have participated in the past. A parent or legal guardian must be present at registration. Registration fees are as follows: Tot Hockey: $200 for one child being registered (plus $150 for each additional child in the same family), and the Youth Hockey Clinic: $275 for one child being registered (plus $225 for each additional child in the same family). Please note, if you are registering a child for the Youth Clinic AND another child or children for the Tot Hockey program, the discounted price will apply to the “Tot Hockey” fee(s). Registration for the program ends October 30th. The program is available for players born between January 1st, 2002 and December 31st, 2012, according to the standards below: Dynamites January 1, 2010 to

South Farmingdale Water District is proud to announce the appointment of Francis (Frank) J. Koch, P.E. as its new superintendent. Mr. Koch arrives at South Farmingdale Water District with 23 years of experience from the Incorporated Village of Garden City. He was a project engineer for his

first seven years at Garden City and then served for 16 years as Superintendent of Water Operations. A professional engineer, Mr. Koch brings a wealth of knowledge and technical experience to South Farmingdale Water District. He is largely qualified to work directly with the District’s professional engineering firms and brings a different perspective to the operations team. “Part of my job is to have everyone come together for the betterment of the District,” said Mr. Koch. “I look forward to working with our outside vendors and engineers and to having our crew be ready for all of the projects that help maintain and

run this District. South Farmingdale has a stellar reputation within the water industry, and I’m fortunate to work alongside an incredibly dedicated group of individuals.” Mr. Koch grew up in Malverne and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering – Civil Engineering from Manhattan College. He moved to Westchester, NY for a brief period of time following college before returning to his roots in Malverne, where he has continued to live since and has been married to his wife Kelly for the last 10 years. Mr. Koch is also a former volunteer for the Malverne Fire Department and an active member of his local community.

Family Fall Festival Residents and their families are invited to the Town of Oyster Bay’s seventh annual Family Fall & Halloween Festivals, which will be held on both the Town’s North and South shores. The first date of the festival will be on Saturday, October 10th, from 1 to 4 p.m. at SyossetWoodbury Community Park, Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury and the second date will be on Saturday, October 24th from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Marjorie R. Post Community Park, Unqua and Merrick Roads, in Massapequa. Each year, residents come out to this annual free event to celebrate the arrival of the fall season

with fun activities for children and adults alike, including Halloween crafts, a hayride, bouncies, games, photo opportunities and refreshments. There will also be a ‘U-Pick’ pumpkin patch for children to enjoy the unique experience of picking out their own pumpkin, as well as decorating the pumpkin to any fun design they choose. In addition, children are welcome to come in costumes. This event is being held rain or shine. The Family Fall & Halloween Festival is sponsored by the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Community & Youth Services, Cultural and Performing Arts Division.

(Notably; he basically followed career advice from counseling at both Farmingdale Library and Farmingdale College’s Small Business Development Counseling - SBDC). Starting with just one local client; Dave worked tirelessly to make sure he helped grow the business. Along the way, he quickly

learned how Marketing was changing and strived to “master” all the modern digital marketing techniques earning certifications in Google Adwords, Constant Contact and more. Over the next few years, word spread and virtually all from referrals MMNY signed more clients; many in Farmingdale and eventually FA R M I N G D A L E VILLAGE. His mission nowadays is branding Farmingdale as a Major LI destination. Dave also serves on committees such as the Board of Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce and the Farmingdale Village Merchants Association, and he routinely lectures at Farmingdale College’s SBDC.
