National Wrestling Hall of Fame

Each year, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame presents Medals of Courage to wrestlers who have overcome insurmountable challenges. This year, the Upstate New York chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame honored Farmingdale high school social studies teacher Jim Hughes with this prestigious award. “What is courage,” asked Farmingdale high school teacher Jim Hughes. “It’s facing life’s challenges, owning them and not letting them control you.” Jim Hughes is a welldeserving recipient of this year’s Medal of Courage Award. From the age of three, Jim experienced visual impairment, but that didn’t deter him from being a leader among his peers in high school, winning matches, or becoming a nationally celebrated teacher who has inspired countless students. It also hasn’t prevented him from making countless contributions to his community. As vice president of the

Farmingdale Federation of Teachers, a Lions Club member, a chaperone for wrestling tournaments, and moderator of numerous clubs at Farmingdale High School. “Mr. Hughes is not only an incredible teacher but a role model for his students and our entire Daler family,” said Superintendent Paul Defendini. “We are blessed to have him as part of our team, and we are very proud of his induction to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.” Hughes is an AP US History instructor at Farmingdale High School and is a highly decorated teacher. In 2006, the National Museum of Education recognized him as the Freida J. Reily Award winner, given to “an American teacher who overcomes adversity or makes an enormous sacrifice to impact students positively.” Two years later, the Harvard Club presented Hughes with the Distinguished Teacher Award. In addition, he was

granted Honorary Lifetime PTA membership in 2016 and was featured in a CBS News special in 2012. Now, yet another honor has been added to his resume. “When I found out I was being honored, I was giddy and proud,” said Jim Hughes. “I don’t wear my disability on my sleeve, but I set the example that life has challenges, and you can opt-out, or you can wrestle with those challenges. It’s all about how you deal with them, and I believe students see that.” The Upstate New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame annual awards ceremony was held on September 19, 2021, at the DoubleTree Hotel in East Syracuse, New York. The National Wrestling Hall of Fame, America’s shrine to the sport of wrestling, opened in 1976 with a mission to preserve history, recognize excellence and inspire future generations.

Their mission is to improve the spiritual and temporal conditions of the children, families and people of the communities they serve by providing excellent service to all who come, whether they be rich or poor, high or low social status. They are here to love, to serve and to give.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and The Workforce Partnership today announced that a Mega Job Fair will take place on Tuesday, October 12th, at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. There is no charge for admission and parking is free. Veterans’ admission begins an hour earlier, at 9:00 a.m., while doors for General Admission open at

10:00 a.m. The event runs until 2:00 p.m. Employers from across Long Island will be seeking candidates for positions including entry and middle management level, licensed professional, hospitality and food service industries, banking, staffing and individuals with technical and IT experience. Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Workforce Partnership and Town of Oyster Bay are committed

to helping residents find meaningful employment opportunities as well as assisting local businesses in recruiting qualified employees. This Mega Job Fair will connect private and public sector employers with job seekers, while also providing attendees with employability workshops onsite.” The Town of Oyster Bay serves as administrator of The Workforce Partnership, a consortium

of local governments funded by the Federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act that provides free valuable resources to both employers and job seekers at Career Centers in Hicksville and Massapequa. These centers help train employees to meet the needs of the private sector, connecting qualified job seekers with employers, and by assisting applicants in accessing job opportunities. The Centers

Saladino Announces Free Mega Job Fair offer Resource Rooms, which are equipped with state-of-the-art computer workstations, complete with Microsoft software and internet access. Additionally, these Centers offer residents access to job listings, resource materials, photocopiers, fax machines and telephones. The Centers provide employability and computer workshops, as well as career counselors who will guide residents through their job search.

Computer workshops are taught on-site in modern computer labs. Residents can increase their marketability by updating or acquiring new computer skills at the Centers. Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier invites residents to submit photos taken in the Town of Oyster Bay to be considered for use in Town publications. “Our residents recently received their 2021 Town calendar, which is filled with photos submitted throughout the year depicting people, places, community events and scenery throughout our Town,” said Councilwoman
