Residents are invited to take part in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Fall Adult Co-Ed Badminton and Adult Co-Ed Volleyball Programs. The programs are open to players who are 18 and older and will be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center located on 167 Broadway in Hicksville. The badminton program begins Thursday, October 13th, and will be conducted on Thursdays from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m., Fridays from 9 to 10:30 p.m., and Sundays from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. The volleyball program begins Tuesday, October 11th and will be held on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 to 10:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. The programs, which are 12 weeks in duration, are $75 for residents and $100 for non-residents. It’s been 15 years since I last set foot on the Edward Kienle Memorial Field as a member of the Lindenhurst Class of 2000. Fifteen years of living and learning and building a life based on the foundation set forth in the schools of good old Lindy, from the playgrounds of Daniel Street Elementary School all the way on up to the hallways of Lindenhurst High School. Each year, on Homecoming weekend, I return to the site where it all began – to reminisce, to reflect, and to soak in the autumn sun with some fellow alumni. Funny thing is, I rarely run into

anyone from my own class; mostly faculty, coaches, the occasional younger sibling of someone I went to school with… I suppose the novelty wears off after the first year or two, certainly once college has been completed and “real” life begins. But for me, it is and always will be, home. The field, the bleachers, the school… the crisp fall air that signals the start of football season, Homecoming floats parading down the street and the scent of concession stand goodies wafting through the air. Lindy pride on display in all its green and white glory, indeed. Sure, there is college Homecoming and all the

festivities that come along with it as well – but the connection is not nearly as strong as the one forged in the district I called home for 13 years, 13 formative years of discovering my passions in life and gaining the confidence to pursue them. Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog, as they say in Lindy. And so I will continue to sit on those bleachers and smile, and remember all the good times. I will cheer on the home team, no matter if I recognize the faces, and find comfort in the unique bond that we all share. I will reflect upon those friendships forged and those many special moments enjoyed through the years. Go Bulldogs!

The Farmingdale School District recently announced plans to redevelop the fields at each of the District’s six schools in addition to constructing Long Island’s premiere sports complex and aquatic center. While the proposed project would require the District to pursue a $36 million bond referendum, taxpayers should also expect close to a one percent reduction in their tax bills based on the project’s timing and the District’s forward-thinking budget philosophy. “Careful financial planning has enabled the District to dramatically improve facilities for our students with minimal impact on the tax levy,” said Farmingdale School District Superintendent John Lorentz. “This philosophy enables the District to both save taxpayers money and construct new state-ofthe-art facilities that will provide unprecedented opportunity for our students and our community.” The announcement was made at a recent

Farmingdale downtown area - specifically the area adjacent to Conklin Street. “By phasing in a new debt schedule with the decline in an old debt schedule, the District will be able to pursue the bond referendum on this project in the fall of 2016,” said Mr. Defendini. “We’re excited to take this step into the future and provide our students with the best opportunities to reach their fullest potentials.” In an effort to further educate the Farmingdale community about the proposed project, the District has arranged a series of presentations and workshops. At the meeting, Assistant Superintendent for Business Paul Defendini explained that effective management of the District’s debt service schedule - coupled with savings from previous programs - has created a window for the District to fund this significant capital improvement project while still saving taxpayers money. Parents may ﬁnd fences provide peace of mind during those times when their youngsters are playing in the yard, while other homeowners prefer fences for the privacy they can provide. Wood fencing can be designed not only for homeowners who prioritize privacy, but it also can be crafted for homeowners for whom privacy is not a significant concern. Wood is a relatively inexpensive fencing material, but the maintenance required to keep wood fencing looking great can sometimes be costly and time-consuming. Preparing Your Fireplace or Stove for the Season

Fireplaces and wood-burning stoves not only can be beautiful focal points within a home, but they also provide an additional source of heat and can be used to keep rooms or entire homes comfortable without the need for additional and potentially costly heating sources. Just like more modern home heating systems, stoves and fireplaces need to be maintained, and that maintenance includes readying them before winter when they are used more heavily. Ensuring a fireplace or stove is in good working order helps to guarantee efficiency of use and safety during the winter months. Open-flame heating sources carry with them certain risks. The National Fire Protection Association states that, between 2009-2013, American fire departments responded to

56,000 home structure fires that involved heating equipment. The NFPA notes that the leading factor contributing to home-heating fires is a failure to keep things clean, principally from solid-fueled heating equipment. The following are a handful of ways to stay safe as you get ready for another cozy season around the fire: Start with the chimney. Begin by having your chimney thoroughly cleaned and inspected. Creosote can build up inside of the chimney. Creosote is highly flammable and becomes more difficult and expensive to clean the longer it builds up inside your flue lining. In addition, animals may have created nest inside of the chimney since the last time the fireplace was used. A professional

chimney sweep should be hired in this situation. He or she will be able to effectively clean the

chimney in a manner that is the least messy and disruptive to residents. Install or check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Operational alarms are essential to preventing injury or death resulting from smoke or carbon monoxide

inhalation. Such detectors are inexpensive safeguards that should be installed on every floor of the house. Batteries should be replaced every six months, and the alarms themselves should be changed every five to 10 years. Inspect the chimney from outdoors as well. Inspect the mortar around any bricks in the chimney and surrounding areas for cracks. If left unaddressed, these can cause dangerous fires. If there are serious cracks, a professional may need to make repairs or the chimney may need to be replaced. You also can have the chimney capped with a screen to keep animals and debris from entering. Inspect the damper. A damper is a

valve or plate that stops or regulates the flow of air inside a chimney. It should be checked prior to the first use of a stove or fireplace so homeowners can be certain it opens and closes smoothly. Clear out flammable items. Move flammable items away from the front of a fireplace or stove. Be sure curtains or other home furnishings are far enough away that they will not catch fire from any errant sparks or flames. Order wood now. Be sure there is plenty of wood for the season. Ask a wood supplier to estimate just how much will be needed, and double-check that the wood will arrive in time for the start of the season. By preparing for fireplace and wood stove use now, homeowners can ensure their winters are comfortable and safe.
