The Zorn story began in 1924, when current owner Merrill Zorn’s great grandparents and their children arrived to the United States from Germany. Soon after, they began to open poultry farms, eventually opening 8 on Long Island, and one in Mullica Hill, New Jersey, selling chickens to wholesalers in Queens and the Bronx. At the time the Bethpage area was primarily farmland.

Peter Zorn, who is Merrill’s grandfather, first opened his doors to the public in 1940 with a small retail store and began selling fresh turkeys. Later he added a variety of fresh poultry, farm fresh eggs, sweet whipped butter, baked breads, and other staples his customers were requesting. In 1949, he was the first to offer rotisserie chickens cooked over an open flame. Peter Zorn was truly a pioneer in retail take-out food. He blended his own spices, creating original recipes to expand his menu to include fresh homemade salads, stuffing and gravy to compliment his rotisserie chicken. A short time after, he added his soon to be famous southern fried chicken and barbequed spare ribs. This turned into a thriving take-out business. His menu kept growing as he met his customers’ needs. Before long, he had a complete catering menu designed for the holidays. Eventually, his customers were using his take home catering service all year long. As you would imagine, complete take-out meals and catering were new concepts in the 1950s and became very popular on Long Island. Many tried to imitate this concept, but Zorn’s Poultry Farms was always number one.

Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes James J. Stefanich wishes to notify town residents that the 2017 General Tax Collection Warrant has been closed, and all related records have been turned over to the Nassau County Treasurer. The original warrant specified that $586,014,575.54 was to be collected to support Nassau County, Town of Oyster Bay, and special tax districts. Assessment reductions and tax cancellations amounted to $15,002.66 (0.002%). Nassau County’s portion was $277,636,494.62 (47%). The Town of Oyster Bay’s portion

was $124,703,617.65 (21%), and the special tax district’s portion was $173,544,839.72 (30%). A list of delinquent property payments was reported to the County Treasurer, amounting to $10,114,620.89 (1.8%). Receiver Stefanich noted that property owners with delinquent taxes would be contacted by the Nassau County Treasurer’s office. Owners will be receiving letters specifying taxes owed along with applicable penalties and late payment fees. The 2017-2018 School

Tax Collection Closed Tax levy bill printing will commence on October 1st, and mailing will start in early October. Receiver Stefanich asks property owners to be patient when calling the Tax Office for information on property taxes due to the usual high volume of calls received at the beginning of a new tax collection. Residents are requested to have the school district, section, block and lot numbers of the property in question available. This information is listed on the tax bill and on the property deed.

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently joined with his Colleagues on the Town Board in recognizing Girl Scout Troop 104 of East Norwich/Oyster Bay for their leadership and dedication to the community. As part of the cadet troop’s Silver Award project, the troop built a “Little Free Library” and installed it at Theodore Roosevelt Beach in Oyster Bay. The “Little Free Library” is a wooden box on a post filled with donated books that can be read and returned. It is a great service to local residents, who can now enjoy reading in the great outdoors. “Many people enjoy

relaxing and reading a book in the sunshine and the Little Library at our Town facilities will offer residents a convenient option to find a good book to read,” Supervisor Saladino said. “This first Little Library will serve as an excellent template for Scouts to replicate additional libraries.” Supervisor Saladino extends an open invitation to local scouting groups to create “Little Libraries” at Town parks, pools and beaches as part of their community service projects. Local scouts will construct the Little Library and oversee its installation along with Town crews. “They will also maintain

the box and its literary contents in cooperation with their local library,” Supervisor Saladino said. “It is a project that teaches the scouts construction skills and requires the responsibility of their ongoing oversight. Farmingdale High School Robotics Club recently welcomed the incoming class of 2021 during their recruitment as the school year began. The Robotics team has previously competed in the playoffs of the VEX Worlds Robotics Competition, and Farmingdale robotics students are well-known throughout the region

for their innovation and technical skills. The robotics club continues to propel the District’s emphasis on the importance of science both in and out of the classroom as it inspires students to be passionate about science. It gives students an outlet to be creative, while also further enriching their education.

The students were recruiting new members in hopes of expanding the club, and spreading a larger interest in science throughout the high school. The robotics club also provides an outlet for students to practice problem solving, helping prepare them to face tomorrow’s challenges.

Challenger Jamboree

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson, Councilman Louis B. Imbroto, Councilman Thomas P. Hand and Town Clerk James Altadonna Jr. recently joined with coaches, players and parents for this year’s Long Island Challenger Baseball Jamboree at John J. Burns Town Park.

This special event brings together Challenger teams for a fun day of baseball. Challenger Baseball is a Little League-sanctioned program established in 1989 that gives physically and mentally challenged children the opportunity to play baseball. Adaptations are made to accommodate these inspirational players. The Town of Oyster Bay created
