It’s funny how many different forms the term “friendship” can take on these days. Gone is the time when having a new “best friend” every year of elementary school was the norm, replaced instead by a handful of fairly close friends and an infinite number of what can only be classified as acquaintances; those you may travel in similar circles with but, once the circle is broken, severed is the superficial connection forged as well. Even among those close friends, there are breakdowns. There are those who you may only see sporadically to grab dinner or catch a movie with, yet when you do get together, it’s like no time has elapsed at all. Then there are the friends you embark on daylong

adventures with, aimlessly wandering the streets of New York City, the beaches of Long Island and everything in between. These are the days of memories made, of endless photographs snapped… the days you will fondly recall years from now, and smile. I recently came across a quote: “Photographs are proof that once, even if just for a heartbeat, everything was perfect.” Not only does it speak to my personal love of photography as a whole, but to that notion of reﬂecting upon moments and savoring them. Sure, it is equally important to be present in the moment and experience it fully; but pictures have the ability to preserve an instant in a way that memory alone cannot always fulfill. Hence, my albums full of fun and silliness, of candid

moments and scenic shores. Of friends, both the lifelong variety and those who may only make a guest appearance along the way. And of course, Buddy, my very special finned friend, who holds a unique place in my heart the way that only a pet can. He may be contained in a bowl, but his personality shines through, and the connection is just as real as those established with friends of the “Human” variety. Month after month, I celebrate his “birthday,” the anniversary of his time in my home, along with the standard holidays that we have been fortunate to share with him. Friends may come and go, and the memories may fade over time; but in the many heartbeats in between, perfection can be found. You need only know where to look.

A Family Franchise Expands Its Brand

Kaufman Enterprises is a family-run, awardwinning McDonald’s franchise which owns and operates sixteen McDonald’s restaurants across Long Island. As part of a far-reaching effort to elevate customers’ experience, McDonald’s is testing a new kind of restaurant at one of these sixteen locations, 655 Fulton Street in Farmingdale, which had its grand opening on May 26th. This followed the premiere unveiling at their Medford restaurant. The new model features interactive kiosks, tableside service and a brand-new design aesthetic.

This innovative approach has been implemented in 30 prototype restaurants across the New York-Tri State region so far, as a result of customerled efforts to align the brand with evolving tastes and preferences. The in-store kiosks allow customers to tailor the menu to their own tastes with an assortment of ingredients, including a choice of bread, cheeses, sauces and toppings. These items are then made to order and are served tableside by McDonald’s staff. The more traditional menu items are still available as well, displayed on digital menu boards behind the counter. Mwaffak Kanjee, General Manager and Vice President of McDonald’s New York Metro Region, stated that this new program has garnered widespread positive feedback so far from both the customers and those employees being trained at these two Long Island locations. While visiting the Farmingdale restaurant, it was apparent that the customers enjoyed the added convenience of being able to customize their order using the new menu items and sit

down with their families to wait for it, rather than having to stand in line. The employees exuded a friendly, positive attitude and seemed genuinely happy with this new opportunity for growth presented by the company. Founded in 1960 by Leon Weil and Irv Klein, the first of their McDonald’s locations opened in East Northport. After Weil’s retirement, Klein expanded the business to include four additional restaurants by 1971. Six years later, Klein’s son-in-law, Jonah Kaufman, joined the team as the company’s first Director of Operations. The following year, Jonah became an owner/operator, resulting in the creation the Klein-Kaufman Corporation. The Klein-Kaufman Corporation grew immensely throughout the 1980’s and 90’s. It earned several outstanding restaurant awards, including the prestigious “Golden Arch” Award for outstanding restaurant operations and contributions to the McDonald’s corporation. In 1996, Klein retired, leaving full ownership of the restaurants to Kaufman, who formed Kaufman Enterprises.

In 2005, Jonah continued to expand the business by bringing on his son, Josh. At first, Josh’s main role was the Director of Operations. Together, Josh and Jonah grew their business, culminating in ownership of sixteen restaurants on Long Island, making the company one of the largest McDonald’s organizations in the United States. Today, Josh, 36, is the majority owner of eleven of the sixteen restaurants. Irv Klein is now 86 years old, living in West Palm Beach, Florida, and is thrilled to see where his family has taken the business he began more than half a century ago.

Registration Open The Town of Oyster Bay’s Cultural and Performing Arts Division (CAPA) of the Department of Community and Youth Services is offering a Workshop Enrichment Program for residents this fall. Registration for all applicants is currently underway with a deadline of September 23rd, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Pinto announced. “The Fall Workshop Enrichment Program offers several excellent and educational programs that provide residents with the chance to pick up useful new talents and hobbies,” Councilman Pinto said. “Categories available for residents in the Fall Workshop Enrichment Program include courses in art, education, entertainment, fitness, music and more.” Councilman Pinto also advised residents to take careful notice of the locations of every workshop program listed on the Fall Workshop Enrichment Program brochure. There will be a wide range of courses for adults and children held at the Marjorie Post Park Community Center in

Massapequa, the William P. Bennett Hicksville Community Center in Hicksville, and the SyossetWoodbury Community Center throughout the season. While some workshops are held separately for children and adults, the Town will once again be offering special ‘Children and Caregiver’ workshops so that they can be enjoyed together. Workshops for adults include watercolor, oil & acrylic painting, drawing fundamentals, Zumba fitness, and more. Highlights for children’s workshops include fun activities like Tuney Tots Little Kids Jamboree (Ages 6 months-24 months), Dancetime 1(students must be 3 years old by September 1), Dancetime 2 (students must be 4 years old by September 1), Jump Bunch Sports Activities (Ages 3-5 Years), Drama Kids (Grades K-3), Piano Adventures (Grades K-4), Drumming for Kids (Grades K-3), Guitar Kids (Grades 3-5), Mad Science (Grades 1-6), Brixology Lego Building (Grades 2-5) and Chess.
