First Day Of School Farmingdale School District welcomed students back for the first day of school on Thursday, September 5, 2019. Over at Northside Elementary School, Principal Michael Febbraro, Assistant Principal Christopher Peterson, and the faculty came outside to greet all the students arriving by bus. Superintendent Paul Defendini was also on hand, helping students find their way to their classrooms. Meanwhile, over at Albany Avenue Elementary School, students arrived to find a colorful sign welcoming them back for the first day of school!

This is where Twilight Wish steps in. Although their headquarters are located in Pennsylvania, the foundation has chapters located around the nation. James Ciervo, who devoted much of his life to helping seniors, created their Long Island Chapter 15 years ago. His career was in the senior health care industry for many years and he continues to help seniors through the Twilight Wish Foundation today. The process of applying to be a wish recipient is fairly simple. You can visit their website at www.twilightwish.org and click on the “Wishes” tab followed by “Request A Twilight Wish”. From here you can start the process. Applications can be submitted for yourself or on behalf of someone else. The recipient of the wish must be 65 years of age or older (or a permanent resident of an eldercare facility), a legal US citizen, have an annual income of less than 200% of current federal government published poverty level income, or be unable to grant your own wish (not including financial reasons), have a history of giving back to others, be cognitively and physically capable of communicating and
experiencing the wish, and may be able to provide physician documentation when requested. The foundation has a committee that meets on a monthly basis to review new applications and they determine the eligibility of the applicants and wish requests. If approved, the foundation will grant the wish as funding and resources become available (if they are not already available). Jackie, a local Long Islander, was nominated to be a wish recipient by her friend at work. Jackie works at Walmart and would walk to work and assist residents at her local nursing home while she wasn’t working. Her friends wanted to make it easier for her to get around. After the wish was received, James Ciervo and Barbara Ransom of the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce helped get Jackie a beautiful bicycle. They brought the bicycle to her workplace and the smile on her face was ear to ear! This foundation is presently looking for more wish applicants in the Long Island area. members as they entered the Bethpage High School auditorium. Mr. Schneider updated the audience on various district news and the exciting educational programs starting this year throughout the district. Following Mr. Schneider’s message,

The Sheriff would like to remind all residents that neither the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, nor any government entity, will call you on the phone requesting payment over the phone. Any request for payment for any outstanding debt should be in writing and payment

INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY- Literacy is a high priority for The Women’s Club of Farmingdale (WCFR) and it was great to read in the September 5, 2019 GFWC News & Notes that September 8 is International Literacy Day. We firmly believe that “literacy does start with the first books you put in a child’s hands.” For many years now, the WCF has renewed a special program where members donate a new security blanket, an age- appropriate children’s book (many times a Dr. Seuss book), and a stuffed animal — all nestled inside a new canvas tote bag. By providing objects of reliable comfort, this undertaking reduces trauma and advances the emotional and cognitive well-being of children. These totes are then donated to our local children’s homeless shelter in time for the Christmas holiday season. Our club plans to continue READY TO GREET STUDENTS - Albany Avenue Elementary School faculty and this mission again this club year. I’ve attached a photo from last year’s program. Twin Sisters Named Valedictorian and Salutatorian
It’s twins! Farmingdale High School Principal Dr. Samuel Thompson announced today that identical twin sisters are the valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2020. Gianna Morales achieved the highest cumulative GPA out of 508 students, earning herself the top spot of valedictorian. Sister Rebecca Morales achieved the rank of salutatorian. “This is an outstanding accomplishment for these two students and puts us in awe of their commitment to learning,”
said Dr. Thompson. “Congratulations to both Rebecca and Gianna! We are extremely proud of this exceptional academic accomplishment!” The young women were told the news in Dr. Thompson’s office, where Superintendent Paul Defendini, Director of Guidance Maureen Moloughney, and guidance counselor Cara-Lynn Molina all gathered for the surprise announcement. Gianna Morales earned a GPA of 104.591 and Rebecca Morales earned a GPA of 104.529. Both
sisters attended Albany Avenue Elementary School and Weldon E. Howitt Middle School. In addition to presenting the sisters with official certificates, Dr. Thompson gifted them several books, including The Book of Extraordinary Facts, The Book of Amazing Curiousities, and the recent bestseller Educated. Before the sisters left his office, Dr. Thompson made an official announcement over the PA to share the good news with the entire student body.

Hall of Fame inductees The Bethpage Union Free School District is excited to announce eight inductees for the 2019 Hall of Fame, which will be unveiled during a dinner sponsored by the Bethpage Educational Foundation. The ceremony will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m., in the high school’s gymnasium. This year’s class includes five district alumni, two retired teachers and a board of education trustee. The honorees are Susan Mittermeier Brooks, Class
of 1968; Linda Candela, retired high school art teacher and chairperson; Dr. Alex Carbo, Class of 1990; John De Guardi, retired high school art teacher and chairperson; Thomas Frost Jr., Class of 1996; Michael Kelly, board of education president; Tom Rousakis, Class of 1989; and Colonel Glenn Waters, Class of 1984. All community members are invited to attend the event. The cost to attend is $75 and all proceeds go to the Bethpage
Educational Foundation. The foundation supports the district’s schools with scholarships, programs and enhancements. Past honorees have included journalists, novelists, generals, artists, first responders, former staff members and local politicians and civic leaders.
