School’s Back and Soon the Flu Will be Too!! Get A Flu Shot Now! Get Vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu. Everyone 6 months of age and older should get vaccinated against the flu as soon as the 2013-2014 season vaccine is available in your area. If you do contract the flu, talk to your doctor about antivirals. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that can be used for prevention or treatment of flu viruses. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. Flu Facts: • The flu is caused by a virus called influenza • Flu is a contagious illness that is spread in droplets made by people when they talk, sneeze or cough. These droplets can then infect another person when they inhale them. • Less commonly, a person might also get flu by touching an object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose. • Once infected, you may pass the virus to others even about a day before you begin to have symptoms yourself. • Flu can cause a mild to severe illness and even death especially in the very young or old, pregnant woman or people with other medical illnesses (i.e.: asthma, diabetes) • The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.

Q: What else can I do to prevent getting or spreading the flu? A: Here are some things you can do: • Get vaccinated! Ask your friends to get vaccinated. • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the garbage. • Stay away from people who are sick. • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. • If someone in the house is sick, if possible, try to keep them in a separate area. • Keep surfaces like tables, sinks, counters and toys clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant (follow instructions on the label).

Q: If I am concerned that vaccines cause autism, what is the harm of with holding vaccines? A: Autism is also common in countries where there are no vaccines. Your child may develop severe illness which is easily vaccine - preventable. Prep Before Painting Painting a home’s interior can give it a completely new look and feel. A fresh coat of paint can make a room feel more vibrant and up-todate, creating a whole new attitude within the room without breaking the bank. Whether creating an accent wall or painting each wall within a room, painting is a relatively easy and inexpensive home improvement project. But that doesn’t mean painting does not require a little prep work before the project can begin. • Address any holes or bumps on the wall. Holes or cracks in the wall will need to be patched with spackle, which then must dry before the wall can be given a new coat of paint. In addition, sand down any bumps until the walls are smooth and free of any unsightly abnormalities. • Wash the walls. Walls can get dirty, and that dirt may or may not be masked by paint. Before adding

a new coat of paint, wash the walls and inspect them for dust. Dust can collect on molding, especially in rooms that get little natural air. When dust has collected on the molding and around doorways and trim, use a damp cloth to wipe it away before adding any new paint. • Apply primer. Primer can serve many functions, not the least of which is its role as a bonding agent between the wall and the top coat of paint. Primer can also help conceal dark colors, prevent stains and increase the life expectancy of the paint job you are about to undertake. • Prepare your paint. Preparing the paint is a simple task, but one novice painters may not be aware of. When opening a new can of paint, stir the paint before using it. In addition, even if you don’t plan to use a roller when painting, do not paint straight from the can, which can be heavier to hold than a small bowl,

and a light bowl is less likely to be spilled than a potentially heavy can of paint. In addition, once paint has been removed from the can, replace the lid so dust and other impurities do not settle in the can. • Purchase painter’s tape. Painter’s tape can be especially valuable to novice painters. Painter’s tape makes it easier to paint smooth and clean paint lines, giving a room a more professional looking coat of paint without the cost of hiring a professional painter. Painting can be an inexpensive and fun way to upgrade a home’s interior. But even though painting does not require the technical know-how of more large-scale home improvement projects, it still requires some prep work and attention to detail to ensure the job is done right.

Game Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Many athletes will tell you they view each game as if it is their last – win or go home, lose and face elimination. They claim it raises the bar by creating a sense of urgency often missing day to day. In the case of the New York Yankees, the better part of the last month has had a “playoff” type atmosphere, with the team resurrecting itself from the ashes of the American League East to at least put themselves in contention

for a Wild Card berth. That’s a far cry from a few months back, when it seemed that every game brought yet another player relegated to the disabled list and a growing tally of blowout losses that were rather painful to watch. The point? For those non-Yankee fans, it just goes to show that, no matter how dire a situation may look, there is always hope. All it takes is the first step. And then the next. And the one after that. Momentum is the key to all progress. This doesn’t

mean that the outcome will necessarily turn out as hoped, but isn’t it better to make things exciting along the way? I think so. (Met fans might disagree.) In fact, most fans have simply decided that baseball season is over - time to move on to football, to be followed in short order by hockey and basketball. But not so fast – as a very famous catcher once said, “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.” Til then, sit back and enjoy the show. It’s going to be quite a ride to the finish.

Only a few short years ago, the rate of diagnosis was one in 150, and this staggering statistic makes it the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the United States,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “There is no known cause or cure for autism. Many treatments and therapies have surfaced since the disorder has grown more visible in the mainstream press, but reputable doctors have yet to agree on any that will reverse the diagnosis. The answer lies in additional research.” Now in its sixth year, the Town’s walk has help to spread the word about autism and help those inflicted with the condition. The event benefits the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism, a dedicated facility located on AHRC Nassau’s Brookville Campus and affiliated with the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System. “Ultimately,

the center helps families obtain comprehensive assessments, family support and information on the latest research,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “It also focusses on building awareness to the issue of Autism.” Registration is $10 for individual walkers or $25 for a family (up to five walkers). Each registered walker will receive a t-shirt and admission to the tailgate party. Remember To Register The Farmingdale School District reminds its residents of the new Basic STAR exemption registration procedures established by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. Residents who currently receive a Basic STAR exemption must register with the state’s Tax Department in order to receive the exemption again in 2014 and afterwards. “It is always one of our highest priorities to keep our residents informed of events or circumstances that may have an effect on our community,” said John Lorentz, Farmingdale School District Superintendent of Schools. “For more information or further questions, we suggest that residents contact the state’s Tax Department.” According to New York State, the new registration procedures are designed to protect residents against inappropriate

and fraudulent STAR exemptions. Farmingdale residents will not have to re-register every year as the state’s Tax Department will confirm a homeowner’s STAR eligibility for future years. The state’s Tax Department will mail instructions to residents who currently receive an exemption on how to register. The state advises that the easiest way for homeowners to register is to log onto www.tax.ny.gov or call 518.457.2036. Residents may continue to register through December 31st, 2013. The Farmingdale School District encourages community members to become involved in the issues that affect our schools. Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer and the Babylon Town Board recently declared September 3rd, Live Like Ron Day in the Town of Babylon in honor of the late Ron Dieumegard, a longtime resident who was known for his volunteer work and desire to help others.
