5 Tips to Prepare for Window Replacement

Winter is coming, and for millions of people who reside in areas of the country that see the mercury drop considerably between December and March, that means prioritizing staying warm. Inefficient or aging housing materials may compromise your ability to do just that. Drafts from doors, poorly protected attics and basements and aging windows may force heating systems to work extra hard to maintain interior temperatures. Replacing old windows can make a home quieter by blocking out exterior noises. Consumer Reports also notes that new windows are often easier to clean and maintain than older varieties. Many homeowners are interested in replacing their windows, but may not know where to start. These guidelines can help the process along. 1. Get several estimates. Ask for recommendations from neighbors or other people in your area on which companies they used to install their replacement windows.

When you interview the prospects, ask several questions about how they go about installing the windows. Questions can include: • How long will the project take? • Will I need to remain home during the process? • Do you discard of old debris? • What is the protocol for installation during inclement weather? 2. Research permits. Most home renovation projects need to be approved by the local municipality. Go to the permit office and find out the requirements. Some window contractors will include securing permits in the cost of the project. After the project is completed, an inspector will come by and ensure the work was done according to code. 3. Change up the appearance. Look at the type of hardware you have around the home and other fixtures. Choose windows that have locks or latches that can match those features for continuity of style. Think about choosing a

different style or frame color of the window, or a different type of window to improve efficiency and function. 4. Research top window manufacturers. It’s tempting to purchase windows based on price alone, but replacement windows are often a decision that only has to be made once or twice for the life of the home. Invest in durable windows that will have staying power. Consumer Reports offers unbiased reviews on various window brands and can help homeowners make sound decisions. 5. Prepare for installation. Clear pathways, remove window treatments and disconnect window alarm systems. Plan for one to two days of installation, advises Andersen Windows and Doors. Keep pets and children away from work areas. Replacement windows can be a smart investment. New windows can improve the look of a home, reduce heating costs and can keep interior spaces comfortable.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic,

Raynham Hall Museum has presented more than 100 virtual programs, and reached over 3,000 students across Long Island. The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

WIBCC has remained open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip. As like many other non-profit organizations, WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a fatherson social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. On Sunday, September 27 from 12-2PM at The Cancer Institute (111 Beach Drive in West Islip), there will be a ceremony to celebrate this month-long event, which will include health information, light refreshments and more. If you purchase a ribbon, you can attend the event and place the name of whom it is in honor of or in memory of right on the ribbon itself. If you cannot attend, it will be placed for you. Fall is a great time to tackle projects around the house. The weather each fall allows homeowners to make improvements to their homes’ exteriors without worrying about extreme heat or cold, while interior projects like painting are made easier because homeowners can open the windows to allow for proper ventilation. Fall also marks a great time to prepare for upcoming projects that can make winter work that much easier. For example, fall is a great time to take stock of your gutters so you can address any issues before leaves begin to fall or the first snowstorm touches down. Compromised gutters can contribute to water issues in basements and adversely affect a home’s foundation if not addressed immediately, so it behooves homeowners to learn the signs that gutters are in need of repair or replacement. • Gutters hanging off the home: Gutters were once installed predominantly with spikes. However, many industry professionals now install gutters with hanger brackets. Why the change? Spikes loosen over time, leading to the gutters hanging off the home. That can contribute to serious issues if left untreated. Gutters hanging off the home need not necessarily be replaced, but rather secured to the home, ideally with hanger brackets instead of spikes. Maintenance is necessary in order for fireplaces and stoves to function safely, and that upkeep must include paying close attention to the functionality of the chimney. Chimneys are designed to last for decades. Cracks and spalling in brick chimneys are common concerns that can cause significant damage if left unchecked. Chimney maintenance involves more than cleaning the flue. Rather than running the risk of costly repairs, which can cost several thousand dollars, homeowners can take some simple steps to keep their chimneys in tip-top shape. Certain components of chimney maintenance are doit-yourself tasks, while others may be better left to the professionals. • Start from the inside and ensure that dampers are working properly. When using fireplaces and other appliances, dampers need to be open to allow smoke to vent outside; otherwise, smoke will be trapped in the home and could lead to carbon monoxide buildup. Dampers need to be fixed or replaced if they are not operational. Replacement fireplace dampers should be snug and not have any gaps, states Vertical Chimney Care. • Conduct a visual inspection of the chimney to check for any cracks or spalling. The award was presented on the 100th Anniversary of women’s suffrage, as the Town commended the centennial of the fight for women’s rights being heard and ratified by the 19th Amendment. “Women involved in ensuring equal rights paved the way for other Rosie the Riveter types to follow in their footsteps,” said Supervisor Saladino. “People like Susan B. Anthony were influential leaders who made a true difference, and Bernadette Castro is also a role model who deserves our highest recognition for her charitable work, public service, and success in the private sector.” Bernadette Castro’s involvement with the furniture enterprise Castro Convertibles started long before she became its

Chairwoman and COO. Bernadette started in the family business at only four years old, when she famously became the most televised child in America after appearing in the brand’s iconic television commercials. And she never looked back. She remained involved ever since, improving the brand and ultimately taking the reins of the company following her father’s passing and eventually relaunching the legendary brand. While her involvement in the business world is certainly something to be recognized, she’s gone so far beyond that as a trailblazer. Bernadette served as the Commissioner of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation a cabinet post she held for 12 years. Under her tenure, the state preserved more than one million acres of land. Her vast preservation efforts helped protect drinking water and secured thousands of acres of forest space. She also secured the US Open for Bethpage State Park - the first time the Open was ever held at

a public golf course. Her great work earned her an appointment of Vice Chair of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation by United States President George W. Bush. Her efforts were also recognized by the National Recreation and Park Association, which designated New York State Parks as the country’s best state parks system. Bernadette’s passion for protecting the environment extends to her community and charity involvement, which even further extends to great organizations such as Tomorrow’s Hope Found, the Interfaith Nutrition Network, and the New York Landmarks Conservancy – to name just a few. “It is truly an honor not only to recognize Bernadette Castro for her many great accomplishments, but more importantly to thank her for all her efforts in protecting our environment,” Supervisor Saladino stated. “All of the difference she has made in our parks system will allow for them to be enjoyed and treasured for many generations to come.”

Kim should take pride in her great achievements as she is a true role model in our community.” HONOREE BIOGRAPHY: Kim Melkun is an avid hockey fan – particularly a NY Rangers fan – Kim created and oversees a ticket exchange program for sports enthusiasts who may not be able to

otherwise purchase tickets for these events. Since the pandemic began just a few months ago, Kim spearheaded the nonprofit ‘Cover Your Faceoff’ – whose main objective is to produce and distribute face masks to essential employees across the world who are in need. Because the team that works with her on this initiative was built on a foundation of die-hard hockey fans, they have collected hundreds of Rangers t-shirts and produced masks that have been sold to fans. This has allowed them to donate at a one to one ratio – for every mask sold, one mask is donated to an essential employee.

New York Blood Center is calling on the community to make appointments to visit donor centers as COVID-19 has fundamentally changed the process of donating blood. Before COVID-19, mobile blood drives hosted by high schools, colleges, businesses and other organizations made up about 75% of the region’s incoming blood supply, but the number of blood drives has dropped by twothirds this year due to the pandemic. The upcoming school year presents new and unprecedented challenges.
