Once upon a time I believed “circumstances” was a dirty word, and for one to allow themselves to be carried by outside circumstances was akin to falling short of personal resolve. Through the gift of time and perspective, “I Can See Clearly Now,” as the late Dr. Wayne Dyer famously titled one of his forty best-selling books. We may find ourselves in a situation where it becomes impossible to remain in comfortable familiarity. The universe not-so-subtly nudges us in a different direction. This new and unfamiliar path could be related to finances, health, relationship, profession or geographical location. There is a divine wisdom and design to this universe; it’s the same wisdom that created you. Sometimes it’s okay to let it take the wheel and go along for the ride. Four weeks ago, I was sitting under two gently swaying palm trees on my Florida patio,
overlooking a crystal-clear blue lake and watching a family of ducks congregating on the grass in my yard before toddling into the water for their afternoon swim. A moment later, I received a call that would change the direction of my life. I was offered the job of Managing Editor for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, in my native, Long Island, New York. After enthusiastically accepting the job and hanging up the phone, the reality set in that I would have to break the news to my son that we were relocating back to New York. We’d be leaving our Florida home, his school, and packing up our belongings to report to this new job in less than a week. The enormity of it all had me suddenly frozen. After sorting through the emotional and logistical details, I reminded myself of the very spiritual principals I’d been studying for a decade. In my book, Journaling Fame: a memoir of a life unhinged and on the record, and in my speaking engagements, the biggest takeaway I offer is that for a human life to be happy, healthy and whole, you must
believe in something greater than yourself. I don’t care what you choose to call it. If you make the shift to knowing that you are here to both learn and teach; and that your life is being orchestrated in creative collaboration with something greater, you will begin to experience the magic of life. I took a deep breath (or two!) and embraced this new adventure. I suddenly found the clarity to make the move as seamless and positive an experience as I could for me and my son. Shortly after arriving at the South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers office on a Tuesday morning, I was greeted by my predecessor, Jamie Lynn Ryan. Jamie spent the next nine days generously training me to take the baton. At Jamie’s farewell celebration just before the start of Labor Day Weekend, I was moved by the impact she has had on the rest of the staff, and on the newspapers’ readership. Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Educators Looking to the Future During the last week of August, Farmingdale School District hosted its 8th annual One-to-World Summer Technology and Learning Institute at Farmingdale High School. All K-12 teachers were invited to participate in the three-day program, which gives both new and veteran educators the opportunity to advance their classroom technology skills, and develop innovative practices for the new school year. The institute included breakout presentations from various facilitators
of software apps, which are currently in use at the district. Each presenter modeled their latest web tools and showed teachers how to put them to use in their classrooms. Sessions included: Buncee 3.0, The All-New Flipgrid, Google Classroom Updates, Book Creator, and GoGuardian for Teachers. Time was also allotted for independent exploration of the new tools. Many teachers were pleased with the chance to get a head start in creating assignments, planning first-week activities, and
setting up their Google Classroom. The One-to-World Summer Technology and Learning Institute originated with Dr. William Brennan, Assistant Superintendent for Innovation and Organizational Development, who is guiding the districtwide initiative to bring innovation and the empowerment of students to the forefront of Farmingdale’s education practices for the purpose of creating global and futureready citizens.

Author & Breast Cancer Survivor to Speak at Adelphi University
Award winning journalist Geralyn Lucas, author of Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy and Then Came Life, will speak at the Annual Celebration of Survivorship Evening of the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. Both of Lucas’s memoirs were translated around the world and received starred reviews in Library Journal. The television film production of Lipstick garnered an EmmyROTARY CLUB AWARDS - Weldon Howitt Scholarship awarded to high school nomination and was an Entertainment Weekly graduate, McKenzie Geghen. “Must Watch of the Week.”
Geralyn’s story was also featured in Nora and Delia Ephron’s smash offBroadway show, Love, Loss and What I Wore. Joining her are three other breast cancer survivors: Jeff Flynn of East Meadow, who is a former support group member and currently a hotline volunteer responding to calls from men concerned about breast cancer; Jamaicanborn Sonia Avery-Williams of Rockville Center, who is a nurse; and Susan Leach, also of Rockville Center, a former support group member and manager at a health care agency. The free event will be held on Thursday, October 18th at Adelphi University’s University Center. Doors will open at 6 pm and speakers begin at 7 pm. A light supper will be served and there will be raffles. In addition, the breast cancer organization, Kat’s
Ribbon of Hope, will be honored. Kat’s Ribbon of Hope’s partnership with the Adelphi program supports their mutual goal to provide assistance to women who would otherwise not have access to quality breast cancer treatment. Katerina Dinas Raptis, a breast cancer survivor who is the co-founder of KROH, was diagnosed when she was 32. She says that while having breast cancer was “a nightmare,” she was blessed with the support of her family and excellent medical care. Many women do not have such support so she was determined to help. She and her husband, George Raptis, and sister, Despina Yarian, established Kat’s Ribbon of Hope in 2013.
