The Brain Aneurysm Center of the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Cushing Neuroscience Institute (CNI), along with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF), will host Long Island’s 5th Annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Four-Mile Fun Run/Two-Mile Walk at Jones Beach State Park on Saturday, September 28th, to promote awareness and education. Proceeds from the walk will benefit CNI’s Brain Aneurysm Center and the BAF to support essential research that may directly benefit those affected and help to reduce

the incidence of ruptured aneurysms. Hundreds of walkers, including brain aneurysm survivors and their family and friends, are expected to attend the fun-filled event. When Worlds Collide By: Jamie Lynn Ryan With the fall season tends to come an avalanche of entertainment. You have the intersection of football and baseball, new television season premieres and lots of movie and music releases to contend with, making your recreational choices far more interesting for the first time in months. What to watch, what to do…so many decisions, but for a change, the fun, trivial kind. This collision of all things entertainment never really hit me before until I happened to be attending a New York Mets game on the

very same night as the U.S. Open was taking place next door. As both events let out at seemingly the exact same instant, the rush of people streaming into one another (literally) was quite an experience, with those from Citi Field heading to the train platform and those from the Tennis Center making their way to the subways down below. It was an interesting contrast – quite the range of diversity on that boardwalk in that moment… people from all walks of life mingling after a night of taking in some of the finest local athletes (well, at the Tennis Center

anyway!). So typically…I guess New Yorkish is the best way to describe the scene. Add to that the ushering in of the autumn season, everyone being back to school, shaking off the last remnants of summer…it brought a unique sense of excitement to the air. Transitions are never easy, whether in weather or in life, but – in both instances – they simply must be dealt with. Like with most things beyond our control, they are better off embraced than shunned. So welcome autumn with open arms – it’s coming whether you like it or not.

Dance student Liesl Jaye made it to Broadway, performing in “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” this year and is joining the cast of “Hello Dolly” this fall. Liesl is also one of three LIHSA students, along with theater students Matthew Kunkel and Emily McPherson, to be named a Scholar-Artist by Newsday and the Long Island Arts Alliance. Film student Alec Urbach earned a bronze medallion in the 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, for his international education project. Special Education Nassau BOCES is known for outstanding special education programs. Special education high school students can earn college credit by taking dual-enrollment courses through a partnership with Farmingdale State College’s “University in the High School.” In a joint research project, Yale and Columbia Universities are currently studying the Nassau BOCES Special Education program as a model of best practices in education. Class of 2013 overcame extraordinary obstacles to achieve major milestones in their education and in their lives. Of this year’s graduates, 21 earned regents diplomas and 30 will head off to college. Fifteen grads will join the work force, 18 will pursue vocational training and two are joining our nation’s armed forces. Teenage Parenting Program (TAP) TAP is a vital support network that enables pregnant and parenting teens to continue their high school education and become responsible, competent adults. In addition to a strong academic curriculum, the program fosters these teens as both students and mothers. College fairs encourage students to pursue their education, while Mommy and Me classes help them develop parenting skills. There are numerous speakers brought in during the year to guide and advise, and each student has a mentor to lend help and support. This year, six young mothers have graduated the program and are headed off to college this fall. Helping them celebrate the milestone, in addition to friends and family, were six healthy babies. The graduates received gifts of books from the Nassau Reading Council, to get them started on their children’s early literacy. Barry Career and Technical Education Center Barry Tech students are dedicated to, and passionate about, their chosen career fields, and their impressive level of achievement shows it. Fall is the time of year when kids return to school routines and buses are back on our roadways. Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco offers the following tips to ensure the safety of school children and motorists during hectic school mornings and when they return home in the afternoons. • Do not text or talk on the phone while driving. This type of distracted driving could have tragic consequences, especially when there are children playing near bus stops. • Stop your car far enough from all school buses to allow children the space to safely enter and exit their bus. Most accidents happen within ten feet of a stopped bus. • Watch out for children walking to and from their bus stop. Oftentimes kids will walk in the street, and fail to look both ways. Slow down to give yourself more control over your vehicle in the event a child does something unpredictable. • If you see a child

crossing the road ahead of your car, even if you have the legal right-of-way, do not rev your engine or beep the horn to encourage them to move faster. This could cause the child to become frightened and lead to an injury. • Never pass a school bus on the right. It is illegal and dangerous. • Never block a crosswalk when stopped at a red light or at a stop sign. This could force the young pedestrians to walk outside the designated safety zone. Always wait for children to cross the street completely before proceeding. • Pay close attention to speed limits in school zones and to designated school crossing guards. • Finally, always use caution while driving during peak school-time rush hours. Take an extra moment to glance in your rear view and side view mirrors when pulling out of a driveway or when dropping your children off at school.

Twas a beautiful morning, the time was not late, On the eighth of September, a memorable date. As we walked down the road before the attack, I prayed to the Lord to please bring me back. Yes, I was afraid, so was every man there, as we talked, sang and prayed in the cool morning air. Below in the valley flowed the peaceful Moselle. It was hard to believe it would soon be a hell. We jumped in assault boats and paddled ahead. Many were hit with shrapnel and lead. We fought up a mountain, our objective was near, But then came a counter-attack from the rear. We had to fight back to a place near the river, Dig our positions, sit there and shiver. For three days and nights, we bravely fought back, And tried to repulse their counter-attack. At last came the orders for us to withdraw. We had lost many men and could fight no more. One thousand went over, two hundred came back. My prayers were answered, I survived the attack. After the war, I composed this poem: Well here I am, a civilian at last, And ready to start life anew. An ex-GI with the war in the past, And target for the public to screw. I’ve been offered a job for fifteen a week, But to me it didn’t sound right. Before I could open my mouth to speak, I was signed up to work day and night. Yes, vacations are out and you can’t get a raise. It’s a hell of a mess I declare. I wonder if accepting a discharge pays, Or should I have stayed over there. Yes, America is the land of plenty; Excuse me while I pick up that butt, Yes, America is the land of plenty, But they never say plenty of what!

On Saturday, September 21st, the Town of Oyster Bay, the North Oyster Bay Baymen’s Association (NOBBA) and Friends of the Bay will, once again, join forces to sponsor the annual Oyster Bay Harbor Fall Cleanup Day, according to Town Councilman Chris Coschignano. “Now in its 20th year, Town employees and volunteers have gathered together, rolled up their sleeves and pitched in to complete a thorough cleanup of beaches and shoreline areas along Oyster Bay harbor,” Councilman Coschignano stated. “While some people walk along the shoreline collecting debris, others work from boats, picking up trash and even discarded boats. This annual event is an inspiring one, helping to remind residents that we all can do our part to help preserve the precious ecology of one of the Town’s

crown jewels, Oyster Bay Harbor.” C o u n c i l m a n Coschignano went on to say that volunteers are being sought to participate in the cleanup, which will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Interested individuals and groups can get further information by calling the Town’s Department of Environmental Resources at 516.677.5853. Volunteers are also welcome to sign up the day of the event. The central meeting place will be Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps, Larrabee Avenue, Oyster Bay. Each year, tons of paper, food, plastics and other litter are left on beaches or dumped overboard from recreational and commercial vessels. “Many people think this debris simply disintegrates, but that can take weeks, months or even years,” Councilman Coschignano stated. “Some of the

debris has a shelf life that many people would find astounding.” “If you swim, boat or fish in Oyster Bay Harbor, or just want to help protect and enhance the beauty and environmental integrity of this beautiful waterway, I invite you to join us on September 21,” Councilman Coschignano said. “If you can’t stay for the entire day, even a couple of hours will make a difference. Cleanup events like this will help to preserve our environment for your enjoyment and the enjoyment of generations to come.”

Calling All Photogs Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Muscarella invites residents to submit their photos for consideration for use in a Town publication. “Publications such as the 2013 Summer Guide or Town Calendar features some of the many great photos submitted by our residents,” Councilman Muscarella said. “As the Town is currently putting together its calendar for 2014, residents are invited to submit pictures for consideration.” The Councilman noted

that photos are accepted all year long, as photos are considered for publications throughout the year. “I encourage everyone to start taking pictures, or go through photos you’ve already taken, depicting the people, places, community events and scenery throughout the Town of Oyster Bay for use in upcoming Town publications,” the Councilman said. Councilman Muscarella went on to say that photos must be taken within the confines of the Town

of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but professionally developed photos, not inkjet printouts, may also be submitted. E-mailed photos, preferably in a jpeg format, should be sent to the Town’s Public Information Office at m k a n e @ o y s t e r b a y - n y. gov. Printed photographs should be mailed to Oyster Bay Town Hall, Attention Public Information Office, Calendar Photo Submissions, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay NY 11771. Entrants will be

notified if their photos are selected for the calendar. Residents should make sure their name, address, phone number and photo description accompany the photograph. Do not write in ink on the back of the picture. The photographer is responsible for the correct spelling of the names of the subjects in the photos, as well as notifying subjects that their picture may appear in a Town of Oyster Bay calendar or other Town material. You may be asked to supply a waiver if your

photo is selected. “The Town of Oyster Bay is a photographer’s dream, and the upcoming summer months will provide countless opportunities to take beautiful pictures,” Councilman Muscarella said. “In addition to our many parks and beaches, the Town of Oyster Bay boasts a wealth of historic sites, museums and other places of interest that could be the subject of a great photo.
