Thanks again to Discover Long Island for all their efforts to help downtown businesses, launching their mobile passport, “Long Island Downtown Deals Travel Pass.” Farmingdale Village was honored to be included as one of the six initial downtowns and to host the launch of the mobile passport at the recent press conference at Lithology Brewing Co. Vision Long Island recently honored the Sidgmore Family Foundation for their charitable efforts launching the Split The Bill NY initiative which was piloted in Farmingdale Village in May. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and myself we thank the Sidgmore Family Foundation for their incredible generosity with this program. The foundation donated $20,000 and it was depleted at 50% in just two days. It was a truly remarkable effort – to split the bill, reimbursing customers up to $50 during the pilot program / pandemic at participating restaurants in the Village. I was proud to join the Women’s Club of Farmingdale and local officials at the gazebo, on the Farmingdale Village Green, on August 19th to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the
Congratulations Frank Bondietti – 50 years as a Rotarian, and also a past president of the Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce. Some merchant updates to share – Welcome back Blink Fitness, so glad you are open again! Farmingdale’s new Bakery – Le Petit Café is now open Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, stop in for dessert, coffee and more! Just a reminder that there is a donation box at Village Hall to collect non-perishable food donations help locals in the community in need. Donations can be dropped off Monday – Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Thank you everyone for following the guidelines in our Village! The restaurants and businesses have been very cooperative with enforcing the regulations in their establishments. We know it’s been a challenge; but from what the data shows, everything we are doing seems to be helping! I have served as Mayor of the Village of Farmingdale for the past 8 years and would like to remind Village residents to vote in the upcoming Farmingdale Village Election. The election will be held on September 15,
2020, from 12:00 PM – 9:00 PM at a new location, St. Kilian Auditorium. The auditorium is located at 50 Cherry Street and will provide a larger public space for social distancing. Town and County Officials Launch ‘Back the Blue’ Ribbon Campaign As the Nassau County Police Department and thousands of NYPD officers living on Long Island continue to face anti-police sentiment coupled with calls to defund the police, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilwoman Michele Johnson, Councilman Louis Imbroto, Town Clerk Richard LaMarca and Tax Receiver Jeffrey Pravato joined with County Legislators Rose Walker and Laura Schaefer in unveiling a new Blue Ribbon Campaign which encourages home and business owners to show their support for the men and women in blue. Supervisor Saladino stated, “No one will be safe in America without the men and women in law enforcement, yet certain radical politicians want to defund and undermine
our police. In Nassau, we are fortunate to live in the safest large suburban county in the nation and that ranking is due to the dedication of our police. We ask residents to join us in wrapping a ribbon around their trees to Back the Blue.” Councilwoman Johnson added, “You can Back the Blue and send a message in opposition to the radical politicians across the nation by tying a Blue Ribbon around your tree. Contact the Town of Oyster Bay today for a free blue ribbon.” Inspectors and Police Officers from the Nassau County Police Department’s 2nd and 8th Precincts thanked officials for their support of law enforcement. Laura Curran, the first women to be elected Nassau County Executive, spoke to the members of the Women’s Club of Farmingdale (WCF) on Wednesday, August 19, at their celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. In addition to County Executive Curran, also present were Rose Marie Walker, Nassau County Legislator; Jeff Pravato, Nassau County Receiver of Taxes, representing TOB Supervisor Joseph Saladino; Village of Farmingdale Mayor Ralph Ekstrand; Cheryl Parisi, Farmingdale Village Trustee and Maryola Dannebaum, Nassau County Press (whose great-grandmother was a suffragette). WCF President Tina Diamond organized a red, white and blue remembrance at the Farmingdale Village Green and despite the rain about 30 club members attended. County Executive Curran recounted that
since the club’s founding in 1913 “many past members contributed to the women’s suffragette movement.” Despite your political party affiliation, “it’s so important not to take the right to vote for granted. Democracy is a precious thing. You either use it or lose it. People have struggled and died for the right to vote. We must always make sure to honor these struggles.” She also stated that she is “very proud to be able to pave the way for the women coming behind her.” Nassau County Legislator Rose Marie Walker praised the current club members “for continuing what past members began many years ago.” She recounted a wonderful story that happened after Hillary Clinton was defeated in her bid for President. As she was reading to a class, a little girl said that maybe someday Rose Marie could be president. With a smile, Legislator Walker answered that there were too many rooms in the White House to clean. A little boy countered that
if she was president, she could have a cleaner lady or man to do it for her.” Both Jeff Pravato and Farmingdale Mayor Ralph Ekstrand spoke about how well women multi-task and how wonderful that so many women have top positions today. General Federation of Women’s Clubs, Inc. – New York State (GFWC-NYS) newly elected President Linda Kreussling described how the “first state allowing women to vote was Wyoming. The Wyoming Suffrage Act was passed in 1869 when Wyoming was still a US Territory. On January 27, 1920, the state officially voted to ratify the 19th Amendment and just seven months later, the Amendment officially secured its place as law. However, by 1920, the women of Wyoming had already been exercising their right to vote for 51 years.” All the attending legislators presented WCF President Tina Diamond with beautiful citations. Town To Host 9/11 & Walls of Honor Remembrance Ceremony September 9th Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently announced that a Remembrance Ceremony for the victims of the September 11, 2001 Attacks on America will take place on Wednesday, September 9th at 7 p.m. at TOBAY Beach. A 9/11 Light Tribute will illuminate the skies along the shoreline in memory of those lost that tragic September morning. At the ceremony, the Town will unveil new names inscribed on to the Walls of Honor that recently lost their battle with 9/11 illness caused by exposure at Ground Zero. The September 9th ceremony includes bagpipe music and religious readings. Supervisor Saladino stated, “To ensure the health and safety of attendees during this COVID pandemic, the Town of Oyster Bay’s 2020 September 11th Memorial
and Walls of Honor Ceremony will hosted in a drive-in fashion, but offered with a new light tribute to those we lost that tragic morning. Every name on the September 11th Memorial and Walls of Honor will be read aloud as we understand how important the reading of the names is for the families and loved ones of those who perished both on September 11th and in the days since that fateful day due to 9/11-related illnesses. All residents are welcome to join us in paying tribute to
those we have lost.” The Town’s 9/11 Memorial - featuring a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center - is inscribed with the names of residents lost on September 11, 2001. The Walls of Honor monument expands each year with newly inscribed names of those who lost their battle with 9/11 illness caused by exposure at Ground Zero. The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable.
Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.
As like many other nonprofit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www.johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the charity code FG-WIBCC20. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced the extension of the summer season at Town beaches throughout the month of September. TOBAY Beach will remain open weekends throughout September, and will be staffed with lifeguards so patrons can continue to take advantage of the nice weather and swim in
the ocean. Additionally, all North Shore Beaches will remain open on the weekends, but will not be open for swimming, as no lifeguards will be on duty. These beaches will continue to be resident only this season, as part of restrictions put into place due to the coronavirus. Supervisor Saladino stated, “I am pleased to announce that the
summer beach season in the Town of Oyster Bay just got extended for one full month! I know this has been a tough year for many of us here in the Town as the public health crisis of COVID-19 peaked here in New York during the spring and still continues to effect us today. While buildings have been repaired and new sites erected in the wake of the attacks, there are many ways to continue to honor the fallen. Patriot Day, which takes place each year on September 11 to honor those who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks, is one such example. The following are a handful of ways that people can honor
9-11 victims and their families. • Celebrate local heroes by visiting or making donations of food or supplies to local firehouses and police stations. • Commemorate the events of 9-11 by observing moments of silence at key times throughout the day: 8:46 a.m, 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., 9:59 a.m., 10:03 a.m., and 10:28 a.m. • Engage in service projects that can help your community, including its underserved individuals, like veterans. National Day of Service, which is the same day as Patriot Day, asks people to do at least one good deed in honor of those who died on 9-11. • Make a trip to New

Pharm Aid Food Drive Prescribes Sunday, September 13 As Donation Day The Long Island Pharmacists Society (LIPS) has joined together with The New York City Society of Health System Pharmacists and Rock CAN Roll to offer a prescription to fight hunger on Long Island and to honor the memory of Bill Mantel, a pharmacist who contracted corona virus in March and passed away on April 17. The collection boxes at the participating pharmacies have been generously supplied by Rx REVERSE. In addition to Bill Montel, Covid-19 has claimed the lives of other members of the Long Island Pharmacists family including Orlando Cuevas and Artie Ponce. The inspiration for the food drive came to Rockville Center pharmacist Howard Jacobson who wanted to honor his friend’s memory. He reached out to Aimee Holtzman, the founder of Rock CAN Roll for her assistance in organizing, distributing and collecting the sorely needed items that will be donated at the local pharmacies over the next couple of weeks. The Pharm Aid Food Drive is happening now and will continue through Saturday, September 12th at participating pharmacies. On Sunday, September 13th between 2pm and 5pm a parade of pharmacists, friends, family and customers will drive by and drop off the donations at the Ryan
Medical Pharmacy in the Ryan Medical Building Parking Lot on Mercy Medical Center Campus located at 2000 North Village Avenue in Rockville Centre. Social distancing protocols will be in effect. Masked and gloved Rock CAN Roll volunteers will be onsite to unload donations. A list of participating pharmacies will be posted on social media. Following guidelines set by the CDC, all participants participating will be required to wear face masks and practice social distancing. The safety of our pharmacists, volunteers and the generous donors is our number one priority. In addition to non perishable food items, Pharm Aid is hoping to provide assistance in collecting basic necessities such as face masks, soap, sanitizers, wipes, and other personal items such as toothpaste, mouthwash, etc. that can be distributed to local emergency food agencies and into the hands of folks who who have lost loved ones and livelihoods.
