Tina Walch, MD, medical director of South Oaks Hospital, was honored with the Leadership award by the Postpartum Resource Center during its fifth annual summer gala on August 13th. Dr. Walch, a psychiatrist with more than 25 years of experience treating behavioral health disorders, was the originator of the Nassau/Suffolk County May perinatal mood and
In 3087, a woman collapsed during a routine child birth; her bones caved in on each other and pierced all of her vital organs, killing her almost instantly. The doctors couldn’t do anything. After a thorough examination of the mother’s body, the scientists saw that her bones did not break, but bent in on themselves under the weight of her skin. The scientist examined the newborn, fearing the same outcome. However, they did not find fragile bone structure like the mother had; they found an exceptionally strong bone structure. The newborn had bone structure strength equal to an average ten year-old boy. That cycle of strong boned child births continued throughout the years.
In the year 4012, a different birth mutation occurred. A mother carried a weak-boned child and, when she was born, doctors decided on a mercy killing, calling it “sparing the loss for the future generations.” Through further investigation, scientists discovered that the father had a 75% weak bone probability and killed him too, again to “spare the loss for the future generations.” The people started calling them “mercy killings for the good of the future.” The last mutation occurred in 4070, when a male and a female produced a child with such strong bone structure that the only appropriate term was titaniumboned. When the mother and father where checked, their genes showed that the mother had all strong bone chromosomes and the father had all strong bone chromosomes, in effect producing

into, well, something more than random meandering in search of sunsets and landscapes and quirky angles. Of course, I suppose this pursuit would also involve photographing humans from time to time…not exactly my favorite subject. See, the beauty of a landscape – aside from its quite literal beauty, of course – is that the only changing factors you need to contend with are weather-related. People, well, they’re a whole different story. They blink, they look away, they grow impatient and start waving their arms and talking before the flash finishes going off… all great material for the photo album. No wonder
why most of my digital camera roll winds up going straight to the trash. In this day and age, with all the mobile photography apps available, everyone purports to be a photographer in his or her own right. Take your smartphone, experiment with a couple of filters, post the finished product on Facebook and Instagram… then sit back and wait for the “likes,” “comments” and “shares” to come flooding in. Easy, right? Personally, I’d like to see some higher quality material on my newsfeed. Step one: purchase a “real” camera. Step two: learn how to use it. Step three: set off in search of those sunsets – and maybe a few people. Maybe.

Shining Studios is a Long Island-based theatre organization that offers classes in film acting, singing, dancing, and musical theater to children of all ages. Classes will be offered on a semester basis, beginning the week of September 21st. Classes will be held at the First United Methodist Church, located at 25 Broadway in Amityville, and are geared specifically toward students in the Town of Babylon. “We are very excited to expand our diverse classes to the youth of Suffolk County. Downtown Music Festival
This month, Nassau BOCES Regional Summer School (RSS) completed another year of successful programming, helping Nassau County students to improve themselves in everything from core academics to the arts. Since its inception, the six-week summer program has grown to serve more than 17,000 students through 58 programs in 23 districts across the county. In the past year alone, enrollment has increased by 25 percent. The largest and perhaps most essential component of RSS is credit recovery, helping students who are struggling with core academics to make up what they were unable to complete during the school year. A key element of this is the intensive two-week Regents course, which prepares students to retake the Regents exam in August and improve their scores.
With recent changes to the Regents designed to better reflect the common core curriculum, more students than ever are retaking the exam. This year more than 1,200 students are using RSS to prepare for the Common Core Algebra Regents. “It’s extremely high stakes for these students,” RSS Principal Judith Hynes said of the importance of the program. “They cannot graduate without passing the Regents exam.” This is why, according to Hynes, they are fortunate to have the RSS staff. “We have a team of 1,000 dedicated professionals providing direct, hands-on support on a daily basis.” In addition to critical academic support, RSS offers a full range of enrichment programs for younger students. There are classes in everything from reading, writing and science to sports, art
and music. Adventurous students can explore a variety of interests including television production, cooking and gymnastics. “It’s a little like summer camp, but educational,” Principal Hynes said of the enrichment program. There are important lessons involved in the fun, such as bullying prevention and good citizenship.” “Nassau BOCES takes on the administrative burden and lessens the cost of summer programs, giving many districts the opportunity to offer a program they could not afford to offer on their own,” Ms. Hynes said of RSS as a whole. “We provide students the chance to improve their abilities, to succeed in academics, and to enjoy enrichment opportunities they normally wouldn’t have.”

million Americans receive blood transfusions every year, and nearly 2,000 donations are needed each day in New York and New Jersey alone. One in seven hospital admissions will need a blood transfusion, including cancer and surgery patients, trauma and burn victims, newborn babies and new mothers. “We’re encouraging everyone who is eligible
to roll up their sleeves and donate,” said Andrea Cefarelli, Executive Director of Recruitment at New York Blood Center. “Summer blood donations help prevent a shortage, allowing us to continue providing life-saving units to patients and hospitals.” Donors with O-negative blood type, or “universal donors,” are especially encouraged to donate, as their blood can be used

Blood donors receive free mini-medical exams on site including information about their temperature, blood pressure and hematocrit level.
