On Saturday, September 24th, the Town of Oyster Bay, the North Oyster Bay Baymen’s Association (NOBBA) and Friends of the Bay will once again join forces to sponsor the annual Oyster Bay Harbor Fall Cleanup. The cleanup is registered as one of hundreds of The Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup events around the world taking place each September. The Oyster Bay event engages the community in protecting our local beaches and waterways and to educate residents by changing the behaviors that create pollution. Throughout the event, volunteers will patrol the shoreline to clean up any debris, while those in boats will collect trash from the water. Volunteers are invited to participate in the program, which begins at 8 a.m. and runs through 12 p.m. There will be three meeting places, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park located on Larrabee Avenue in Oyster Bay, Stehli Beach located on Bayville Avenue in Bayville and Centre Island Beach located on

Bayville Avenue in Oyster Bay. Residents can volunteer and are also welcome to sign up the day of the event. Volunteers are not obligated to stay the full day; even a few minutes of assistance can make a difference. It is recommended that volunteers bring work

This is the time of year, in late summer, when all thoughts point north – to Saratoga Springs, home of the world-famous race course, the sprawling Adirondack Mountains… and utter tranquility. My family and I have been going to Saratoga for the better part of my life each summer, our little “home away from home” where the air is fresher, the people are friendlier and the city welcomes you as one of its own. Primarily a “summer town,” Saratoga is perhaps best known for its thoroughbred racing; but that is certainly only a small aspect of what it has to offer. Simple wandering down Broadway, the main strip of town, will afford you

endless hours of browsing in the quaint shops, eating at the dozens of restaurants and bars, wandering through the two beautiful parks and gawking at the gorgeous multi-million dollar homes. If you wander slightly off the beaten path, you will find the National Racing Museum, the National Dance Museum and the grounds of Yaddo Gardens, an artists’ retreat housing some of the most beautiful and exotic plants within its gates. Skidmore College calls Saratoga home as well, as it cultivates the next generation of artists and, with them, the artistic vibe which reverberates throughout the city. The Saratoga Performing Arts Center, located within the cozy confines of Saratoga State Park, welcomes cultural performances of all genres

throughout the summer, from the NYC Ballet to the Philadelphia Orchestra to some of the most popular national musical acts. Another staple of the schedule is the annual Jazz Festival, a two-day event which brings together thousands of people on the lawn to picnic and enjoy a common love. Of course, Saratoga Springs has plenty to offer throughout the year; but there is something about those late summer weekends, that mixture of sunshine and slight chill in the air, the tailend of racing season and the beginning of a new college year, which seems like the best of all worlds. Indeed, how happy I am that Saratoga has become a part of my world, at least for a brief moment each summer.

But they also can be annoying when conversations, texting or perusing the Internet gets in the way of proper etiquette. Talking loudly in public areas, texting when in the middle of a face-to-face conversation or sharing personal details in public are not just bad manners, but such behaviors also can be unsafe. Poor mobile phone etiquette is cause for some concern, but there is great cause for concern for people who find themselves

routinely distracted by their mobile phones while driving or operating equipment. Using a mobile phone when driving greatly increases a person’s risk of getting into an accident. Distracted driving has become something of an epidemic, as the following figures, courtesy of Don’t Text and Drive, illustrate: • Texting or doing something on your phone can distract drivers for as long as five seconds. If you’re traveling at 55 miles per hour, that is the equivalent of driving the length of a football field without looking at the road. • Texting while driving makes

you 23 times more likely than normal to be in a car crash. • Among drivers between the ages of 18 and 20 involved in car accidents in the United States, 13 percent admitted to texting or talking on their phones at the times of their crashes. • The National Safety Council reports that cell phone use while driving leads to around 1 .6 million crashes each year, with nearly 330,000 injuries occurring from such accidents. • Cell phone usage while driving can delay a driver’s reaction time as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at

the legal limit. Although the majority of drivers support a ban on texting while driving, many still continue to do it. The single best way to prevent driving accidents and fatalities related to mobile phone usage is to put the phone down. Consider the following suggestions to help you avoid looking at your phone while behind the wheel: • Keep your phone in a purse or in a bag in the back seat so that it is not readily accessible while driving. Many cars now have Bluetooth-enabled handsfree dialing and calling, so you do not need to have the phone

nearby to answer a call. • Leave your phone at home on short trips and give yourself a break from screen time. • Set up an automatically generated text message that indicates you are driving. Other apps will read out texts to you or block incoming calls or texts altogether. • Turn off notifications so you will not be tempted to look at your phone each time there’s a new pop-up or sound.
