The Student Activist Grant of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island is available to Nassau County middle school and high school students who want to create a better world. The $500 grant funds a selected student’s project in areas of peace, humanitarian efforts, the environment, disaster relief, or disadvantaged groups. Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer invited residents to Overlook Beach on Saturday, August 19th, for the Town’s annual Beach Blast. The event featured live music, rafﬂes for charity, rides, games and even an ice cream-eating contest. The weather made for a picture-perfect day for the Beach Blast this year.

Beachgoers lined Overlook for a late-summer visit to the ocean and pitched tents, stuck umbrellas in the sand and of course took a swim in the water. The Town of Babylon lifeguard staff helped keep everyone safe while enjoying the waves. Over twenty children competed in this year’s ice-cream eating contest as they were cheered on by friends,

Most of us reading this column have memories of Hurricane Sandy, and many people are still rebuilding from it all.

As we watch the terrible devastation of Hurricane Harvey in Texas, we feel so much compassion for all who have been affected by this disaster - the pictures and stories have been unbelievable.

It reminds us all that we are all subject to events and circumstances in our lives that are unexpected, and out of our control. We should always be ready to help people in need.

New Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, new Councilman Lou Imbroto, and Mayor of Massapequa Park Jeff Pravato announced today that the Town of Oyster Bay will partner with Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, Island Harvest, to collect food and supplies to support the ongoing relief efforts for the victims of Hurricane Harvey. “Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas as a Category 4 hurricane the strongest storm to hit our country in 10 years,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Tragically, thousands of people are now seeking food and temporary shelter, as Hurricane Harvey has continued to deliver unprecedented amounts of rain in the impacted area. This is our opportunity to help give back to the many people and agencies who came to our aid following Superstorm Sandy. Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced plans to host a Waterfront Festival in conjunction with the Town’s 32nd annual Bluefish Tournament on Sunday, September 10th, from 12 noon to 6 p.m. at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park. The free event, sponsored by Trinity Solar and Connoisseur Media of Long

Island, features children’s activities, face painting, learning exhibits on solar energy, environmental protection and sea life, New York State’s largest fish shaped cake and live musical entertainment by Captain Jack (Billy Joel Tribute), Beyond Fab (Beatles Tribute), Whiskey Road (country hits) and Randy Jackson of Zebra (acoustic Zeppelin).

Supervisor Saladino stated, “I’m thrilled to bring this free familyfun event to Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and invite residents of all ages to come down and enjoy live music, marine and outdoor exhibits, great food, arts and crafts and other family-fun activities.” For the last 10 years, Supervisor Saladino hosted

a Marine and Outdoor Recreation Expo as a State Assemblyman. The Expo attracted thousands of visitors and this year, as Supervisor, Joseph Saladino is excited to expand upon earlier efforts by presenting Waterfront Festival in conjunction with the annual Bluefish Tournament. “The Bluefish Tournament is an all-

day event and a mustdo for avid fishermen,” Supervisor Saladino stated. “Following the fishing excursion, participants enjoy a tailgate party with hot dogs, beverages, snacks, rafﬂes, awards and prizes, thanks to generous event sponsors.” Registration for the Bluefish Tournament, which is held from 4:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., is currently

underway and open to anglers of all ages at $35 for Town residents and $45 for non-residents. Registration is limited to the first 350 boats and early registration is advised. Fire Island Lighthouse Light Keepers Behind the Scenes Tour Saturday, September 9th, at 9 a.m. Follow one of our present day Lighthouse Keepers on his rounds. Going Above and Beyond Teachers provide many things to their students. According to a poll of 1,500 teachers conducted by the educational resource Edutopia, 93 percent of teachers feel obligated or somewhat obligated to buy school supplies for their

classrooms with their own money. The Education Market Association says that virtually all teachers wind up paying out of pocket for supplies. The amounts spent annually can be upwards of $1,000 per teacher. In addition, not all of the teachers funding supplies work in low-income districts. A report published in early 2016 by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities found that

many states now provide less financial support per student than they did before the recession took hold roughly nine years ago. Districts forced to work under tight budgets are increasingly outsourcing the costs of supplies to parents. When parents fail to provide supplies, teachers are bearing the brunt of the costs to avoid seeing their students go without necessary resources.
