Making Strides Against Cancer The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks will occur on Sunday, October 21st, 2018 at Jones Beach and Sunday, October 28th, 2018 at Suffolk County Community CollegeEastern Campus, uniting communities, honor those touched by the disease and raise awareness and funds for a world without breast cancer. The event at Jones Beach
is the most attended event in the United States with over 65,000 volunteer participants, helping to raise nearly $3 million dollars. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation. The noncompetitive, inspirational event raises awareness and funds to end breast cancer and provide hope to ensure no one faces breast cancer alone.
Dollars raised help the American Cancer Society fund innovative breast cancer research; provide education and guidance to help people reduce their risk; and offer comprehensive patient support to those who need it most. In 2017, ACS staff helped guide more than 40,000 cancer patients through every step of their journey as they moved through the health care system, including helping
with insurance problems, referring them to ACS and other local services, assisting caregivers and addressing obstacles to care. “Because of the determination of Making Strides supporters, the American Cancer Society is there for people in every community affected by breast cancer, whether they’re currently dealing with a diagnosis, may face one in the future, or
will avoid it altogether because of education and risk reduction,” said Patti Lestrange Mack, Communications Director for the American Cancer Society. “At the event, communities embrace a bittersweet mix of purpose – celebrating survivorship and paying meaningful tributes to loved ones lost. The event featured live music, raffles for charity, rides, games and even an ice creameating contest.
Beachgoers lined Overlook for a latesummer visit to the ocean and pitched tents, stuck umbrellas in the sand and of course took a swim in the water. The Town of Babylon lifeguard staff helped keep everyone safe while enjoying the waves. Over twenty children competed in this year’s ice-cream eating contest
as they were cheered on by friends, family and other residents. Winners were awarded by age group. After dark, the festivities concluded with a fireworks display, a staple of the Beach Blast. Residents looked up and enjoyed the colorful display, which served as a proper sendoff to the 2018 summer season.

This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. Some of these events include their Dancing for a Cure event, which raises awareness and research for individuals who have or have had cancer; their Holiday Dream Mission, which assists families in financial distress during the holiday season; their Military Saves Week, which is geared toward assisting military members financially; and their Angel Awards, which honors women of Long Island who have created an impact in the areas of community, volunteer, philanthropy and business development! Equity First Foundation is available to provide educational presentations on an array of topics such as the importance of credit awareness, budgeting and mortgage modification. Approximately two thousand new Chromebooks are in the process of being distributed to select grades in the Farmingdale School District for the 2018-2019 school year. Grades 10-12 were given the opportunity to pick up their computers prior to the start of classes, and all elementary students (grades 3-4) will receive their Chromebooks during the first week of school. This distribution marks the third phase of the One-to-World Learning Initiative, a collaborative effort led
by Dr. William Brennan, Assistant Superintendent for Innovation and Organizational Development and successfully implemented by teachers and administrators. The program aims to transform the process of teaching and learning, and affords students the opportunity to cultivate skills such as collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. Phase One of the program began in 2016 with an initial distribution to the sixth grade, followed by Phase Two in 2017, which delivered computers to
grades four through eight. In early September, Dr. Brennan and Farmingdale High School Principal Dr. Samuel Thompson will host grade-level assemblies to address the appropriate use, procedures, and responsibilities that all students are expected to adhere while the computers are in their possession. Similar to the Howitt Middle School support system, Farmingdale High School has established their own Daler Depot to provide maintenance and tech support its students.

Long Island Educational Leaders Gather to Celebrate SCOPE Long Island’s public school educational leaders congregated at Oakdale’s Bourne Mansion on August 9th for SCOPE Education Service’s 34th annual Dinner Meeting for superintendents and school board members. The event served as a networking opportunity for new and returning superintendents and board of education trustees and other education system professionals. SCOPE provides a vast array of school district services, such as before and after-school child care programs, school enrichment programs and professional development. SCOPE Executive Director George L. Duffy told those in attendance that their work is vital and urged them to utilize and benefit from the many programs and services SCOPE provides. He also introduced all newly installed school board members and
superintendents and wished them success in their new positions. Henry Grishman, president of SCOPE’s board of directors, gave valuable advice to the organization’s new guests. He said, “Leave your school district in far better shape than you found it.” Speakers included Roger Tilles, who serves as Long Island’s representative on the New York State Board of Regents, and New York State Commissioner of Education MaryEllen Elia. Both provided updates on education policy changes, such as state assessments, graduation requirements and teacher evaluations. Regent Tilles said he is examining ways to create opportunities for teacher advancement and noted that while many Long Island districts are receiving national accolades, other districts are struggling. “We have to remember that those kids are our kids,” Regent Tilles
said. “We cannot separate districts doing well from those that aren’t. The equity issue needs to be brought to the forefront.” Commissioner Elia urged educators to be vocal about the issues surrounding the federal Every Student Succeeds Act, the new New York State standards and assessment issues. She said she is most proud of ESSA’s emphasis on civic responsibility and engagement. “We need to teach students to be critical thinkers that look at issues,” Commissioner Elia stated. “Students need to be aware of civic problems.” After receiving questions about the controversial opt-out movement, the Annual Professional Performance Review, charter schools and the move for privatization of public schools, Elia encouraged educators to remain steadfast on their focus of what is good and beneficial for students.

Oyster Bay Harbor Cleanup S u p e r v i s o r Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson invite residents to participate in the Fall Oyster Bay Harbor Cleanup, scheduled to take place between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Saturday, September 15th. This environmental cleanup is co-sponsored by the Town of Oyster Bay, the North Oyster Bay Baymen’s Association (NOBBA) and Friends of the Bay. “This environmental cleanup initiative at Oyster Bay Harbor includes Town employees and volunteers rolling up their sleeves and working side by side
to ride our beaches and shoreline areas of debris,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Join us on Saturday, September 15th and help make a difference!” Volunteers are encouraged to meet at the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps and waterfront gazebo located off of Larrabee Avenue in Oyster Bay. Additional meeting locations for the cleanup include Theodore Roosevelt Beach in Oyster Bay, Stehli Beach in Bayville and Centre Island Beach in Bayville. Councilwoman Johnson stated, “Countless

Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Lou Imbroto invite residents to participate in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Annual Walk for Autism, held to benefit the Advantage Care Health Center’s Fay J. Linder Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities. The Walk, now in its 11th year, will take place on Saturday, September 22nd, at John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa. “Autism can present itself in a wide range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal
communication, as well as by unique strengths and differences,” Supervisor Saladino stated. “It is estimated that the condition effects 1 in every 68 people in the United States, and the earlier it is diagnosed the greater the ability to help with intervention services.” Registration for the event begins at 10 a.m., with the walk commencing at 11 a.m. A post-walk tailgate party is also held rain or shine. Councilman Imbroto said, “The Fay J. Linder Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities is a comprehensive
outpatient assessment and treatment program that provides the highest quality state-of-the-art clinical services to people with Autism Spectrum disorders.
