Oyster Bay Town Clerk Richard LaMarca recently announced that residents who wish to deter any potential door-to-door solicitors and peddlers can obtain a free, waterproof, vinyl ‘No Soliciting’ sticker through the Town Clerk’s Office. Town Clerk LaMarca stated, “Now more than ever, our Town residents

wish to remain unbothered at home by the potential nuisance of door-to-door peddlers. My office offers free ‘No Soliciting’ stickers to homeowners as a way to set clear boundaries with anyone approaching your home looking to do unwanted business. Contact us today for a free sticker.” Town Clerk LaMarca further cautioned residents

to remember a few simple guidelines to help avoid any potential pitfalls of being taken in by a fasttalking peddler or solicitor. Residents are advised to check for a current Townissued photo identification badge prior to doing any business with a door-todoor peddler. Photo ID issued by the Town Clerk’s Office is a good form of

protection because it is issued only after an indepth background check of the individual has been made and full disclosure of the nature of their business is provided. Dozens of Students, Parents & Officials Urge Nassau School Sports Officials to ‘Let Them Play’ This Season Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with members of the Town Board and local elected officials, as well as dozens of supportive parents, sports officials and student athletes in calling for county high school sports officials to allow them to play this fall season. Earlier this week, Section VIII of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association voted to postpone high school sports in Nassau until 2021, while officials in Suffolk voted to move forward with their fall seasons. “This new school year will already be filled with many new variables for our students, and the inconsistency of these decisions only add to the already mounting frustration of parents and students alike as we embark on a new school year,” said Supervisor Saladino. “As students reenter their classrooms

with celebration, they and their parents continue to search for a greater sense of normalcy in these uncertain times. Participating in sports activities brings that sense of normalcy to so many of our young student athletes.” Supervisor Saladino added that many children have been playing these sports throughout their entire school careers, and that many high school athletes could potentially have their academic futures impacted if they are not permitted to participate in fall sports. He further stated that many sports organizations have safely returned to the field and that school sports officials could certainly put forward safety protocols to protect young players. “Sports has proven to be an essential component in the educational process, and in building leaders of tomorrow. It helps our youngsters learn concepts of sportsmanship

and teamwork. These are lessons they take with them throughout the rest of their lives,” the Supervisor said. With much precedence available, officials pointed out that many sports activities have been permitted to resume, and have done so safely and efficiently. Councilwoman Michele Johnson added, “As a parent, I can speak firsthand about the value of scholastic athletics. I can also speak firsthand about the tremendous job the school districts have undertaken since this pandemic began. We commend them for how they’ve successfully navigated these unchartered waters and offered students meaningful education and support under the most challenging of circumstances. We are confident they can get our players back on the field while protecting their health, safety and welfare.

Additional Updates Tropical Storm Isaias, Discover Long Island Launches Mobile Passport in Farmingdale & 5 Other Downtowns PSEG announced they will Reimburse Customers for Food and Medicines Spoiled During Tropical Storm Isaias. According to the press release issued by PSEG Long Island, “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic customers whose electrical service was interrupted by Tropical Storm Isaias for at least 72 hours can be reimbursed for spoiled food and medication. PSEG Long Island will reimburse residential customers up to $250 and commercial customers up to $5,000 for food spoilage if their service was interrupted for 72 hours or longer between Aug. 4, and Aug. 12, 2020 because of Tropical Storm Isaias. For residential customers, food spoilage claims of $150 or less must include an itemized list. Food spoilage claims over $150 must include an itemized list and proof of loss. Separately, customers will be reimbursed for losses, up to a maximum of $300, for prescription medications that spoiled due to lack of refrigeration. Customers must provide an itemized list of the medications and proof of loss. Commercial customers applying for reimbursement must supply an itemized list of spoiled food and proof of loss (invoices, inventory lists, bank statements). Customers can apply for reimbursement at www. psegliny.com/claims. The reimbursement claims cannot be processed over the phone. Customers will

have until Sept. 16, 2020 to file claims. Reimbursement is expected to take up to 60 business days from when a proper claim form is completed and submitted to PSEG Long Island”. The Board of Trustees and I are happy to report that the new natural gas powered generators kickedin and were operating to supply water for almost 3 days during Tropical Storm Isaias when the Village water department/area of the Village lost power. Providing water during the power outage was possible with the new natural gas generators and we are grateful to be able to provide continuous water / water service during the pandemic and tropical storm. We would like to thank Geary Gerhardt and the Village Water Department for all their efforts - they are doing an amazing job. Even with the heatwaves and storm water supply in the Village continues to be provided without interruption. In addition to thanking our DPW staff for their work during the storm and clean-up afterwards, we also thank all first responders / emergency workers - we commend everyone for their help as we recover from the storm and during this crisis.

Keep Devices In Top Shape And Running Well The need for reliable technology has never been more apparent. When the world hit the proverbial pause button in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, technology was crucial to keeping people connected to the world around them, helping people maintain some semblance of normalcy as it pertained to work and education. Students and families who have invested in various electronics to help keep their household running should understand that maintenance is required to keep these devices running effectively. These tips can help keep gadgets in tip-top shape. • Protect devices from extreme temperatures. Electronic devices are

designed to operate under an array of conditions, but pushing those conditions can result in damage. Most devices are fine between temperatures of 32 F and 90 F. But don’t leave electronics in the car, in a sunny window or outdoors. devices • Clean regularly. Refer to the user’s manual for the proper ways to clean the devices you rely on each day. Some may require a specific cleaner or a particular fabric to help ensure the device isn’t scratched or damaged. Spray cleaners on a cloth and then wipe off devices, rather than spraying cleaners directly on electronics. Try a can of compressed air to remove dust from crevices or vents.

• Invest in a surge protector. While surge protector power strips multiply the number of available outlets, they also serve a more important purpose. These devices will cut off power to plugged-in electronics if there is a power surge, helping to prevent damage. • Don’t overcharge. It’s essential to have gadgets charged and ready to go, but overcharging can reduce battery life. Do not leave devices charging overnight. Battery University ™, a free educational website offering battery information, says that nickel- and lithiumbased batteries should be stored with a 40 percent state-of-charge. This level minimizes age-related capacity loss and keeps the battery in good condition. • Use protective cases. Cases can prevent damage if devices are dropped and also may safeguard against scratched screens. Cases and covers also minimize dust and dirt on devices. • Keep software upto-date. Security issues may arise when software is not updated, and programs may not run effectively or be compatible with others. Along the same vein, routinely clean out unused files to free up space, and clear cookies and browser histories to maintain speed and efficiency. Routine maintenance can keep electronics working properly when they’re needed the most.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring post-mastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

To accomplish their mission, they focus on pressing these goals:

Research: To promote legislation to increase funding for environmental research and provide funding for specific breast cancer projects. Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable. Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.
