Farmingdale State College Welcomes New Assistant Provost

Farmingdale State College

is pleased to announce that Christopher P. La Barbera, PhD has been appointed Assistant Provost, effective August 1, 2023. Reporting to FSC Provost Laura Joseph, La Barbera will be responsible for the campus initiatives that advance the academic mission of the College.

In this role, he will provide strategic direction and oversight for various academic offices including but not limited to Distance Learning, Nexus Center for Career Development and Applied Learning, and The Faculty Center. He will also play an important role in support of the college’s, community/ civic engagement initiatives in support of the FSC’s Carnegie Classification as well as initiatives in the area of Microcredentialing. As a key member of the Deans’ Council, La Barbera will help to advance the campus’s strategic plan, and execute other responsibilities as assigned by the President and the Provost.

La Barbera joins FSC from Massachusetts Bay Community College where he served as Assistant Provost and led the online learning division and academic support areas of the college, including tutoring, accessibility resources, and the library. His experience includes fostering the evolution of curriculum and leveraging technologies to support learning in remote and online formats throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, La Barbera oversaw

the development and transition of more than 120 new course sections to an entirely online format, applying instructional design standards to support faculty and ensure continued excellence in course design.

At Massachusetts Bay Community College, he also served as Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences, Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, and Dean of Humanities. His earlier experience includes appointments as Assistant Dean of Continuing Education with Southern New Hampshire University, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Colby Sawyer College, and Term Lecturer of Philosophy at Stony Brook University.

“This position is a unique opportunity that will serve my passion for the value and importance of public higher education,” said La Barbera. “I am also very excited at the prospect of serving the vibrant, culturally diverse community of my native Long Island in this role.”

He received a PhD and MA in Philosophy from Stony Brook University, and a BA in Philosophy from Dartmouth College.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board today announced a Free Family-Fun Waterfront Festival and Outdoor Concert will take place on Sunday, September 10th at TOBAY Beach Marina. In addition to the free concert featuring Jimmy Kenny and the Pirate Beach Band, the ultimate beach party tribute band to Jimmy Buffet, Kenny Chesney, and the Zac Brown Band, the day of free family-fun will feature marine and outdoor exhibits, a children’s snapper derby, police

boat demonstrations and food concessions! The festival will run from 12:00pm to 4:00pm.

“The Town is thrilled to offer a free day of family-fun and live music at TOBAY Beach.

Bring your family to Waterfront Festival for a great outdoor concert, educational exhibits and foods and drinks as the summer ends,” said Supervisor Saladino. “This free festival also provides a great opportunity to introduce children to recreational sport of fishing, as all equipment will be provided along with professional

assistance and guidance.”

Fall 2023 Toddler Arts & Crafts Program

Registration Opens September 6th for Popular Program

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announced that the popular Toddler Arts & Crafts Program will be offered again this Fall, beginning on October 10th. This 6-week program offers classes at the Town’s Ice Skating Center Community Room in Bethpage and at the Hicksville Athletic Center, and is open to children ages 2 through 4.

“The Town’s Toddler Arts & Crafts Program is a wonderful way to help support your toddler’s development through nurturing their artistic expression,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “Classes will certainly

fill up quickly as this program offers children an opportunity to meet others their age and explore their creativity. Highlights of the program include holiday crafts and ceramics.”

The Toddler Arts & Crafts Program begins October 10th and is 6 weeks in duration.

Residents who sign their toddler up for the program must choose one class per week, per child. Classes will take place on:

Tuesdays at 10:00 am for two-year-olds, and 11:00 am for threeand-four-year-olds at the Hicksville Athletic Center in Hicksville; Wednesdays at 10:00

am for two-year-olds, and 11:00 am for threeand-four-year-olds at the Ice Skating Center Community Room in Bethpage; and Thursdays at 10:00 am for two-year-olds, and 11:00 am for threeand-four-year-olds at the Ice Skating Center Community Room in Bethpage.

Registration will take place ONLINE through the Parks Portal available at oysterbaytown.com/ portal beginning on September 6th at 9:00 am. Space is limitedfirst come, first serve. Registration will close when the program reaches full capacity.

Town Clerk LaMarca Announces Special One-Stop Passport Weekend Looking To Get Away?

Appointments Available For September 9th & 10th

To help residents looking to obtain new passports, Oyster Bay Town Clerk Richard LaMarca announced that his office will offer a special one-stop Passport Weekend on Saturday, September 9th and Sunday, September 10th from 9am to 3pm at both Town Hall North in Oyster Bay and Town Hall South in Massapequa.

“Residents looking to apply for a new passport are invited to visit Town Hall during Passport Weekend to receive assistance,” said Town Clerk LaMarca. “We can help you with organizing your documents, obtaining a photo and submitting the documents for approval.”

Requirements for applying for a passport include:

One 2x2 color photograph

with a clear view of the applicant’s face against a plain white or light colored background. Photos will also be available for $10 at both Town Halls North and South during Passport Weekend.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship

– Previously issued undamaged U.S. passport, certified birth certificate, Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth, Naturalization Certificate, or Certificate of Citizenship.

Proof of Identity –Naturalization Certificate, Valid Driver’s License (cannot have been issued or renewed in the last six months), Current Government ID (city, state or federal), Current Military ID (military and dependents).

This service does NOT

approximately 45 minutes. The cost of the program is $35 per child who is a Town resident, and $45 per child whose care giver is a Town resident but not the child. The child’s birth certificate and a tax or utility bill will be required to validate age and proof of residency. A guardian must be present during the class.
