Gomez found Hilal as a puppy and saved her from the despair that so many dogs in that part of the Middle East succumb to. While for security purposes he cannot share the details of how he rescued her, he can share the condition he was in. He was extremely dehydrated, starving, and in need of medical care. He rescued him, led him to good health, and has created a solid bond with him. Knowing that he would return to the U.S., he reached out to Guardians of Rescue to see if they could help with the risky mission of helping him relocate the dog back to America. “I saved Hilal once and now I’m hoping that through the Guardians of Rescue people can help me save him a second time,” added Gomez. “I can’t live with the idea of leaving him behind, because I know what will happen to him, and we have a strong bond. I need to take him back to Oklahoma with me.” Guardians of Rescue are experience at helping soldiers bring their dogs back to the country. They have a team of experts who work at every step of

Imagine being an American soldier stationed in a part of the world where a “holy war on dogs” has been declared. In America, dogs are considered man’s best friend. But in some places in the Middle East, the complete opposite is true, creating a harsh environment for the animals. Hilal will first be flown into New York, and then will be taken on to Gomez’ home state of Oklahoma, where the two will be reunited for good. It’s a mission that is not only risky, but is also costly, which is why the rescue group is teaming up with those in the public who support the mission and can help make it a reality. “When we pull off a mission like this we cannot do it alone,” adds Misseri. “This is a mission that takes the support of people in the community who want to give back and help this soldier and his dog. Even small donations

gen• e• sis: the origin or mode of formation of something; evolution, inception It all began back in elementary school; earlier, even. The clipping in the local South Bay Newspaper heralding the entrance of the Class of 2000...into kindergarten. I was a part of that storied graduating class, and as we progressed through the next dozen or so years of schooling, the various accolades of my fellow Lindy alums would be documented within the pages of our neighborhood paper. My own graduation announcement was featured there, as I moved on from the halls of Lindy High and began my studies in journalism on the opposite shore at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University. Four years later, it was time to take a stab at a career in the real world and, upon the encouragement of my mom, I sent a random query to the newly minted South Bay’s Neighbor, thinking it might be an ideal place to gain my footing in the field. As luck would have it, the paper was in the process of a major overhaul, transitioning from its rather antiquated black and white format and beginning the arduous task

of streamlining what had been, to that point, an extremely laborintensive, manual ordeal week after week. I entered the picture as an editorial assistant, designated as the one to cull through the incoming e-mails and process the local community news submitted by readers. Photos, press releases, upcoming events whatever seemed newsworthy was prepared, along with a selection of handwritten articles penned by our original editor, Lillian Nolin, still a fixture at the old Lindenhurst office. As I worked from my desk in Farmingdale, monitoring the weekly content, I was fortunate to be surrounded by a staff that took me under its collective wing, teaching me the ins and outs of editing, formatting and even a little graphic design. Fast forward three or so years, and the 11 original editions had morphed into 43. Lillian had retired, leaving me as the “veteran” editor, now responsible for penning my own weekly column, serving as a “roving reporter” of sorts covering select community events, taking photographs, and coming up with my own concepts for new features.

At all of 25 years-old, I was entrusted with the responsibility of driving this product to the next level editorially - and I loved every second of it. Over the next decade {wow, a whole decade}, the structure of South Bay’s Neighbor progressed and transformed, as did the staff, the content and the design. In the winter of 2014, we added a magazine to the mix, introducing Seasons, our high-end glossy feature, publishing five times a year. Always evolving, this was yet another opportunity to be a part of a product from the ground up, and to showcase our creativity in a new format for an even wider audience. What began as a first step into the field of journalism turned into a large portion of my career, a solid foundation from which to build upon and grow. I have often said that, although my 13-year tenure here has been, technically, one job, it has felt like several all rolled into one. In many ways, the evolution has come full circle - from the local clipping back in 1987, to now, as I pen my second-to-last column for the old hometown South Bay...a Lindy girl at heart, always.

Dalers in Space Howitt Middle School 7th-grade science teacher Jessica Finnerty and student Aaliyiah Taylor received the trip of a lifetime this summer. In association with Farmingdale School District, they were sponsored by the Northrup Grumman Foundation to travel to Huntsville, Alabama to attend an incredible week of Space Camp. “It was an amazing experience that I’m so happy I decided to take part in,” said Ms. Finnerty. “We were put into teams of fourteen and for thirteen hours a day we worked and ate together. I think NASA was trying to mimic how astronauts work so closely together because of their need to rely on each other during uncertain situations. My team was very international and included teachers from Greece, Costa Rica, Germany, New Zealand, Wales, and America - including one from the Navajo reservation in New Mexico.” Teachers chaperone travel, but then split away from their students for dormitory arrangements and activities. Everyone receives blue space suits with patches and are assigned teams to work on all sorts of engineering challenges, with mission scenarios that require dynamic problem solving and critical thinking skills. “We got up at 7 a.m. and worked until 9 p.m. to do

all sorts of fun-based missions,” said Aaliyiah. “Everyone got their own job. First, I was a pilot, then a capcom (capsule communicator). They had simulators to make us feel like we were walking on the moon. I was really feeling like I was an astronaut. Space is cool!” “We built a solar sail, an ablative shield, and a lunar

Both their teams - Team Kibo and Team Deimos - won the coveted Commanders Cup. “We honestly didn’t think we could win,” said Aaliyiah. “We were just trying to have fun and it paid off.” “The teachers were invited to attend the student graduation at the end of the week,” said Ms. Finnerty, “so I was there when we found out her team won too. It was great!” This marks the tenth year that the Northrup Grumman Foundation has sponsored Space Camp for the purpose of encouraging student interest in STEM - and the fourth consecutive year for Farmingdale School District’s participation in their scholarship program. Aaliyiah’s mom Quiana was originally reluctant to send her daughter to Space Camp but is now so glad that she did. “She’d never been away or on a plane so we were concerned. But then we spoke with her teacher and become comfortable with it. To ensure that all students have the tools they need to get a good education, the Women’s Club of Farmingdale (WCF) has once again partnered with the Junior League of the Women’s Club of Farmingdale to sponsor its Annual Back-to-School Backpack Drive. WCF Welfare Committee Chairs Pat Antonucci and Ellen

Pence solicited members, friends and family to donate new backpacks filled with much needed school items, including, folders, binders, post-its, notebooks, pencils, pens, crayons, erasers, glue sticks, loose leaf paper, markers, scissors, etc. On Monday, August 17th, members of the Junior League, Debbie DiTaranto and Linda Kreussling, joined with members of the WCF to drop off the backpacks/supplies to St. Kilian’s Outreach Director Nina Petersen. were busy sewing, knitting, crocheting and making a variety of handmade crafts to sell at the Annual Cultural Arts Day and “Art in the Park” to be held on the Village Green on Sunday, September 16th. In addition to homemade cookies, brownies and cupcakes, the club will be selling handmade cloth “kitty cats,” throw pillows, fleece blankets, pumpkins, lighted stars and fall and holiday table centerpieces. Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand announce that registration is open for the 33rd annual Bluefish Tournament, scheduled for Sunday, September 16th. “This all-day sporting event features hours of fun fishing followed by a tailgate party with refreshments, raffles and awards,” Supervisor Saladino said. “The event is open to anglers of all ages but space is limited, so sign up quickly.” The tournament runs a LENZ 2014 White Table from 4:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration is limited to Chardonnay. “We are excited to continue our very special partnership with LENZ. They have long been a supporter of FREE and have hosted a number of showcases for artwork created by members of FREE’s art program,” said Robert S. Budd, CEO, FREE. “This latest collaboration is a beautiful example of the power of art, and its ability to transcend boundaries,” he continued.

District Welcomes Teachers Farmingdale School District held a three-day New Teacher Institute at Howitt Middle School this past week to welcome fifteen newly-appointed teachers to the district. Following a warm welcome from Superintendent of Schools Paul Defendini; Assistant Superintendents Glen Zakian, Dr. Joan Ripley and Dr. William Brennan; and Dr. Jennifer Olsen, Assistant to the Superintendent, the

teachers were taken on a bus tour to each school, where they received a brief orientation from all the principals. The three-day program, led by Dr. Joan Ripley, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning, included everything from school culture and curriculum, to safety and digital technology in the classroom. “Our goal is to provide on-going learning related to effective

instructional practices, content standards, and differentiation in order to meet the diverse academic and socio-emotional needs of students,” said Dr. Ripley. “Our induction program provides a forum for new teachers to participate in a threeyear professional learning community where they will work with mentors and administrators to grow and learn.”

Waterfront Festival Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced the Town will host a Free Family-Fun Waterfront Festival on Saturday, September 15th from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at TOBAY Beach Marina.
